Ubuntu :: How To Launch An Application As Root

Feb 6, 2011

I use Firestarter, seems to be a good firewall. But it is a desktop/GUI application, and it requires root access, or rather sudo in Ubuntu. Every time I launch it, I am required to type in my user (not root) password. How can I make it run automatically at startup (KDE) without prompting for a password?

The command would look something like this: java -jar /file/location/whatever.jar I've searched and searched and can't figure out how to do this. EDIT*** I would like it to pop up and ask for the root password before it launches the application.

General :: Launch Application With Keyboard Shortcut In Gnome

Dec 13, 2010

I use ctrl + shift + s to launch synaptic in KDE. That works wonderful and it is standardized on all my systems. I want to define the same in gnome, so that it does not matter if I'm in gnome or KDE.Where can I do this? Now before you start mentioning, I am familiar with keyboard launchers like launchy or gnome do (but have to admit that I don't know that much what gnome do does in all extents), so I am not looking for a program that launches an app after typing a few letters. I want exactly that keyboard combination, everything else will not do it.

I just mention that, because it happens all the time that I see in my posts that I ask:
How can I do B with Y? I don't want to use Z. (specifically asking the question) and then hear as an answer: you can do B with Z!And I am always tempted to answer: That is not what I asked, I asked something specific and got an answer that does not concern it.

Fedora :: Launch X Apps On A Remote Ssh Session?

Mar 5, 2010

Desktop computer (AMD64) running F12. Nothing unusual about it, stock install. Thinkpad laptop running Windows XP. Putty is installed, I can SSH to Fedora.

If I'm at the laptop, in a Putty session, how can I (for example) type "firefox" and have the resultant Firefox window appear on-the-laptop?

I generally have X running all the time on the desktop because I can't get the wireless network connection to function without NetworkManger (not that I really care because I'm rarely at a console screen and need net access).

General :: Root Invisible At Session Menu

Feb 15, 2010

I was having an annoying problem with icons on my KDE desktop moving out of place, even if the icons were locked. I blamed KDE, but I don't have the knowledge or experience to guess what part of KDE was the problem, so I reinstalled most or all of KDE. That did indeed solve the problem, but it caused two minor new "problems." Both I can ignore, but one I should probably fix. One, the MEPIS splash screen was replaced by a Debian splash screen. Two, on the session menu, root became invisible so I can no longer select it with the mouse; I can only type it in (which I don't mind doing).

Ubuntu :: Launch Guest Session From Login Screen?

Jun 21, 2011

i am wondering if it is possible to do this all i can find with google is idea proposals and brainstorms i know i could make a separate account and call it guest user bu that user would get to keep data/settings where as a guest session places a temporary account in the /tmp folder which combined with a ram disk for /tmp would result in some really fast performance since i use a ssd for / which would make the traditional hdd only used for /var also since /tmp would be a ram disk it would be like the guest is using a live cd with security restrictions and performance enhancements on top of this there would be no trace of the guest on my computer after shutdown

Ubuntu :: Guest Session At Login Screen - Fails To Launch GDM

Aug 2, 2011

Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.

This needs to give a permission denied, or something:
Code:
cd /home/(admin account username)
ls

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.

One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.
The other method listed lower in the thread,
Code:
/usr/bin/guest-session
Seems to work, but upon logging out, fails to launch the gdm

Only way to restore is restarting the computer.

Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Launch A .sh From An Application Shortcut

Sep 1, 2010

I'm new here, but certainly not new to Linux. Some of you may recognise my screen handle from other forum groups. Sadly my other communities seem to be dying and this one is going strong so here I am! I'm sure there's something I'm doing incorrectly, but here's my scenario:

I have a pair of shell scripts that launch SSH sessions with different forwarded ports, and use them multiple times each day. I'd like to drag the shell script directly onto the top Ubuntu Bar where shortcuts go and be able to use it. Or, even better, put all of my frequently used shell scripts in a "drawer". I know that I used to be able to make a shortcut, and set its path to "gnome-terminal -e file://xx.sh" and the script would run in a new terminal window. When I try to do this, a terminal opens with an error dialog that reads "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal". Permissions?

Ubuntu :: Launch An Additional Application And Add It To The Launcher?

Dec 2, 2010

I run 10.10, netbook. Fine so far. I don't manage to call an application that I added manually, though. I have created a menu item, with all subdetails, a proper command, icon, everything. And I can see it in the menu editor, and it is there, even after a reboot. But: How to launch it?? It never shows up under applications, it doesn't show up in Searches, I can't type it in. It does work fine, though, when I open a terminal and add the proper command. It then also shows in the launcher list (left column). But it can't make it 'stick' there, the right-click option does not show in this case.

how to *start* an application that I have added to the menu? Why would a menu item never show as an available application?

I get this output:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./cxinstaller", line 85, in <module>

It has something to do with python I guess but I tried about every possible solution I could find on the internet but nothing works. Any idea's how to fix this error? I tried all option, but no luck so far.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Simultaneous Application Launch In BASH?

Feb 28, 2010

I'm trying to launch CoverGloobus (a fantastic little album art and current song display) and Rhythmbox simultaneously through a BASH script. Problem is that when I attempt to run the script the first time, CoverGloobus doesn't launch, but Rhythmbox does. Here's my script as it is right now:

Code:

#! /bin/bash
#Opens Rhythmbox and CoverGloobus
rhythmbox && covergloobus
done

I've double-checked the commands in gnome-terminal, and they're the right ones for launching the applications. Here's where it gets odd, though. The second time I run the script, CoverGloobus and Rhythmbox launch simultaneously. I've reproduced this scenario multiple times.

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.
