I am a LINUX newbie using Ubuntu. I love it so far but I am having issues. I cannot connect to the wireless network that I am using with my other Windows PC. The problem in my opinion is that the wireless device I use isn't operating. No light comes on the device. I am not sure how to "find hardware" with Ubuntu.

I installed the new Slackware 13.1 64 on my laptop and I am trying to connect to the internet via a wireless network but i don't what is wrong with my configurations it just doesn't work.
I tried doing the following:
iwconfig wlan0 essid "ESSID"
iwconfig wlan0 key "Password"
iwconfig wlan0 channel NUMBER
Then i do dhcpcd -d but then no success after - i try to ping some sites, no reply, i put new dns servers in resolv.conf, still no results, i tried to ping some ips and it says network unreachable, it just doesn't work at all.
I did iwlist wlan0 scanning and it found all the wireless networks, so the adapter is not the problem, the problem here is the procedure. How to do it properly so it will work ? I can connect via ethernet by easy configuring eth0 but i have no success for wireless networks. I read everything there was on google, i searched a lot of sites, i tried a lot of different methods but NONE of it worked.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on my HP Touchsmart TX2 1020us which has a Broadcom 4322 chip. At first my computer didn't seem to see the card at all, but then I typed the command (sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source) and then restarted the computer and now I'm connected to the network, but cannot connect to the internet so how do I figure this out. Like I said I have very little experience with linux at all so please don't make your answers too complicated.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had a heck of a time trying to get my laptop running ubuntu to connect to my home network. I have managed to get it to work at my university which would seemingly be more difficult than getting it to work at home, so I know for a fact it isn't a hardware or driver issue. If I try to connect via ethernet cable from my router, it detects that I connected the cable but says "disconnected" and never lets me connect. If I SKIP the router and go from my modem directly to my laptop via ethernet cable it works great.
Using the wireless network tool I can see all of the wireless connections in my area. When I go to connect to my network it prompts me for the WEP key and when I enter it and hit connect it just keeps cycling and eventually times out and finally again prompts me for my WEP key. I know this network works as it works just fine on my Windows 7 partition. Another interesting note - both my wireless and ethernet connections both worked flawlessly and stoopid easily on the live cd but don't after the full install.
If I manually enter in the information for my wireless through IPv4 settings and enter in the Address,Netmask and gateway I can connect to my network - but then I have no active internet connection. Same deal with my wired connection. Is this because choosing this manual method grays out the DHCP?
Just today I installed opensuse 11.3 on my Compaq CQ61. Even though I am able to connect to networks (both with an ethernet cable and wireless) I don't have internet access. I have used opensuse for a very brief period in the past and I had no such problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen using Fedora in VMWare, sometimes I can connect to the internet and sometimes I cannot. I do nothing differently on different days. I restart the machine and / or shut the machine down at the end of the day. When the machine starts back up the next time, I might have an internet connection or I might not have an internet connection. The 2 computer symbol that appears in the top will also sometimes be displayed. If I have that icon and click on it, it will display connections I can use including a sys one. I have a bridged connection chosen in VMWare also. Furthermore, when I click on the System -> Administration -> Network Device Control, 'eth0' is listed and it is listed as 'active'.
Yesterday I could ping out to a specific ip address on our network ( 192.168.1.xxx ). Now, I cannot ping that same ip address. I receive an error 'Destination host unreachable'.
How can I make it so that I have the internet connection every time I start up the machine? What do I need to check as far as the internet connection goes and the network connection?
I have a dual boot laptop. It has both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 running on the same machine. Windows can connect to the wireless flawlessly, however, Ubuntu seems to be so fuzzy. The first time, it can connect to the wireless internet in the dormitory. The succeeding days, the network icon just keeps on turning as if it's trying to connect. What's wrong? View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like some help setting up using a wireless connection. I can connect using wired connection, and I have no trouble browsing. I have a strong wireless connection as well; however, when I try to browse I get a server not found error. I did download the necessary drivers. Before that, I didn't have a wireless connection. I was able to connect on this pc before the install, and all other devices still connect using wireless. I have a linksys router.
The one thing that stands out at me is the ip address that it says the wireless connection is using. It says it is 10.42.43.1
I feel like that might be problematic because I'm pretty sure my router only accepts connections with values that are between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.200.

I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I have phoned Telstra Technical Assistance and the told me they cannot help me because the Operating System is Linux.

This works very well with other Macs, but I'm having problems connecting to such a network using Linux. I tried all combinations of configuration, double- and triple-check the WEP password but could never get an IP address. In a last effort I also tried without encryption, but still couldn't get my Linux box connect to the network.
I don't know if Windows has the same problem. Now I'm suspecting two things. Either I misconfigured something in my Linux installation, or OS X is doing something smart and makes it difficult for non-Apple devices to use the network (I also tested with an iPhone, it connects very well, unsurprisingly). Now what is wrong? What do I have to do?
Tried the live boot of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my work PC today (it has Windows Vista on it and it is literally DEAD slow). There's a wireless network in the office and the PC has a wireless network card installed.
The problem was the following - I booted up Ubuntu, the "tray" was showing the network icon. I click on it, it shows me the list of all available wireless networks. I click on the one that belongs to our office, enter the password, click "Connect".
Now, here comes the problem - after "loading" for some three minutes, the same window pops back up. No errors, no messages, absolutely nothing. The password is correct because the Windows installation and the other PCs in the office can connect just fine. Anyone knows what could be the problem? The drivers are apparently fine if it can find the networks and detect the connection encryption correctly.
I have ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition running on dell mini 10 and i cannot connect to my wireless network. I entered in everything on the editing wireless network section of ubuntu. However when I try to enter in the mac address as soon as I start typing the apply button becomes unactive. I have entered it before and I did connect to my wireless net with my netbook. However I tried top connect this morning and I wouldn't let me! I did not connect automatically to my wireless net work as it had before. I am typing this message on my desktop using the same internet connection so, I know that the net is active.

But I cannot connect. If I remove WPA or any security from the wireless connection(from my wifi router) I can connect to wireless network without any issue. But when there is any security is involved to the connection it does not connect. How to connect to wireless. Into version 5.1 don't exist this option. I need to find packages like network-manager.... and all relatives and install in 5.1 in correct order to success.

I was told that there were drivers that were basically "hacks" for skirting this issue. I've tried two different drivers and neither seems to be doing the trick. My current driver is the "Broadcom STA wireless driver".

I installed Suse 11.2 on clean HD. I cannot connect to the internet. Seems like Suse didn't install drivers for on board ethernet card. It is a Marvell Yukon 88E8056. I'm new to this and don't know how to install the drivers.
