I got most of email in that most of the people are asked me to give step by step Installation method for Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 in dual booting. Oct 29, 2010just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

Nov 23, 2010I recently bought a portable with a Windows 7 system.I want to install openSUSE 11.3 but I also want to keep Windows 7 - so I need to install a dual boot system.On my desktop I have GRUB with Windows XP and openSUSE 11.3 and all works fine.How do I proceed ? I did not find much documentation yet, but maybe I looked in the wrong places.

Dec 13, 2010I've recently bought a new computer and installed Windows 7 on it, but left 100GB of space on a separate partition so I could put Debian next to it in dual boot. I have the new Intel i7 950 processor and I run Windows 7 Proffesional 64 bit, so I assumed I had to pick the ia64 debian image. However the CD I burned from the ia64 image didn't boot. (a black screen started and an underscore kept flashing, but nothing else happened)[URL]
I've managed to install i386 Debian on a older intel pentium 4 computer before and that worked fine. I believe I used another application to burn the CD then. This time I've burned the CD with the default Windows CD burn application. I can try burn more CD's but I don't have much left so I want to make sure this is the problem before attempting again. (the burned files on the ia64 CD look exactly the same as the files on the i386 CD, when browsing through the cd files in windows) "If your PC has a 64-bit AMD or Intel processor, you will most likely need the "amd64" images (though "i386" is also fine), the "ia64" images will not work."This seems a bit strange, they recommend me to use the amd64 image if you have a "64-bit AMD or intel processor". I dunno if this is a typo, but it seems weird to me that the AMD-64 Debian version would also work on my Intel machine

Oct 14, 2010i currently am running windos 7 (64 bit) and would also like to install ubuntu on a second hard drive. i understand a dual boot is easy enough to do, but i'd like to install ubuntu so that it and windows are completely isolated. rather than be prompted with a boot screen to choose os, i would do so by changing hd boot priority in bios. i'd like the end result to be 2 separte computers in one box. can it be set up this way, and if so, how?

Feb 19, 2011I'm trying to set up a share for my system which is dual booting windows 7 64bit and ubuntu 32bit 10.10 What i did
-Install Samba from the Ubuntu software center
- In System->Admin->Samba add the share for my /Home/Downloads
- In smb.conf i edited the workgroup to that of my windows7 workgroup
- In the home folder right clicked on Downloads and in sharing option i allowed others create and delete
privileges and Guest access ( security not an issue). Then allowed Nautilus to add the permissions automatically. Now from what I have seen if i go into windows 7 in the network section i should have a Ubuntu share appearing but i don't. The only devices which show are the router and the computer itself ( of which ubuntu isn't in) Is there anything i missed or how do i access these files ?

Jun 23, 2011The problem is that I need to use windows as well every now and then for gaming. So I have an internal hard drive dedicated to windows out of my laptop and one inside for kubuntu. Changing hard drives out every time I game is a bit of a bother and wondered if anybody has booted into windows without fiddling about with the hard drives. Can windows be booted from outside the laptop? (e.g. by using a sata to USB converter frame)?

May 6, 2011i've just got my gateway laptop which has a recovery option. Due to my observation, the computer has 3 primary partitions when I firstly got it: 12.7 GB, whose property is system recovery (empty and hidden); 100MB whose properties are ACTIVE, primary partition; partition C whose properties are BOOT, system, primary partition, crash dump and page file. Seems that when the machine starts, it firstly read the 100MB partition and then it is leaded to the partition C, where the windows 7 is installed. I SHRINKED THE PARTITION C AND CREATED 3 LOGICAL DRIVES.
Now I want to install OpenSuSE 11.4 on one of my logical drives. What should I do to keep all things well, which means I will be able to dual-boot and also keep my recovery function well? What's more, what I do not want is that the windows 7 cannot be chosen at boot or neither of them can boot!

Oct 5, 2010Have a little experience with backtrack 4, which is a Ubuntu distro. I'm changing to Lenny due to hardware limitations on my laptop, an older Dell inspiron 7000.
Here's the specs :
400 MHZ,
120 G HDD parted as C: = 20G (has bad sectors, left blank) and D: = 20G Windows part
128 Mb low density RAM
ATI Rage Mobility ( not sure of video RAM, I think 8 Mb)
Now I liked running BT and liked the linux work, so when the BT install went south I started to look for another linux distro I can run, the BT tools I use are linux after all. Here's where I hit my stump. I decided to go with the Lenny distro, it already has some of the tools I need, but the first time I installed I had the HDD like this 20G, 20G, 20G,20G, 17.??G. I had windows installed on C: (of course, no problems, yet)
After I installed lenny to D: via an iso I downloaded, the Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.6 "Lenny" - Official i386 xfce+lxde-CD Binary-1, BTW first install was from booting from the disk. After reparting, format, etc. of the install, GRUB boot loader detects my D: Windows, great. Reboot to GRUB boot menu, select ddebian, and it loads...cool, until I realize I don't have synaptic, the tools, and apt isn't going to work unless I can load the linux driver from the cdrom...which I can't find.
Reboot...windows, internet for answers I'm thinkin. GRUB loads fine, select windows and get the following error message "Windows can't start because of hardware configuration problems. Could not read from selected boot disk, check boot path and hardware. Check configuration manual for disk configuration."
It took three days to get Windows reinstalled, and a LL format (zerowrite the drive) but during the process I discovered a possible hdw issue...bad sectors on the C: hdd. Solution: C: 20G = unused, D: = Windows xp. Worked great. No more windows issues, so try it again. This time I used the disks installer from windows. Everything started great, boot menuselected debian, install-graphic, but this time I let the part manager create a drive, 20G from the free space an it appropriately made it's swapfile...when lenny booted it was good, but still no synaptic, cd/rom, couldn't browse the computer.
Reboot to windows to get instructions from someone that really knows what's going on...no windows. exactly same message as before. I was able to boot into debian okay, but couldn't find any drives, utilities, wasn't very much, but I needed my windows and the internet to get lessons. I am familiar with the terminal console and KDE. Can use apt for updating, but prefer using the synaptic. Why does my windows keep disappearing? If I can solve the dual boot issue I can learn the system casually. Right now my config is: C: = 20G, nothing here, still haven't run a scandisk either...next on todo list. D: = 20G Windows install...what I'm using now. I'm not going to attempt to reinstall debian until I receive a efinate answer to the dissappearing config, or boot capacity. Oh, yeah, Did try a fdisk/mbr and fix. this didn't bring it back either.

Jun 10, 2010I'm looking for a good partition scheme to install BT4 dual boot with windows 7, I've freed up about 160 G for my install and was going to use BT4 as an everyday distro and wanted enough space to install extra packages like vlc and what not as well as use wordlist.sh to create a substantial dictionary. These are my initial partitioning plans 3G /,6G usr, and about 3G swap with the rest being /home for word lists and whatnot would you mind sharing your partitioning setups so I can make this efficient as possible?

Jun 27, 2010So I finished downloading Windows XP Ultimate (It is real. It's not officially supported by Microsoft) and I expected it to be small like Ubuntu was. I only have a CD-RW drive. I realized the extreme size difference with Ubuntu over 600mb and XPU over 4gb. I know how to modify partitions from the Live CD. I'm wondering if it's possible to install XPU or any version of XP while the operating system is active. It was possible with Windows 98. This might be the wrong place to post, but I really want to dual-boot Windows. Linux is great, but I would like to use SOME of my stuff without WINE.

Aug 22, 2010I have an Asus Xonar DS, and am getting no sound in Windows whatsoever. I'm pretty sure something in Ubuntu is causing the problem as this only started happening after I installed it. I used to get heavily distorted sound in Windows, and now nothing at all. I've tried removing pulseaudio and disabled alsa, restarted ubuntu and then went into Windows, and it didn't help. Sound is 100% fine in ubuntu.

I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. What I want to do is wipe the smaller hard drive and install Ubuntu Studio on it and have it show up in the boot menu just like my wubi install does.

1. When I install Ubuntu Studio, do I install the boot loader to the MBR of the hard drive I'm installing it on?

Jul 5, 2011The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

Jul 25, 2010 i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.
General :: Windows - Backup A Dual Boot System?
Aug 29, 2010I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.
My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.

I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?

Jun 4, 2011I had Ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. I decided not to use Windows anymore, so I deleted it's partition (using Gparted) and formatted it to ext4. Then I did update of grub.Here are few issues I am having now:
1. The new partition won't automount
2. I can not use new partition. It has only one directory - lost and found. I can't copy data there.
3. Grub still has Windows 7 option (it doesn't work of course)
4. Grub fails to boot (it says it didn't find /windows partition), so I have to always skip that manually

Jan 22, 2011I have a dual boot system. I previously managed to mount that drive under Fedora by specifying its label in /etc/fstab. But something changed that label, so I had to modify the entry in fstab. This time, using blkid I found the proper UUID and put that in /etc/fstab. So now I can mount the partition. But I also want to create a link on my desktop to my files under Windows.The location is /mnt/c/Documents and Settings/len/My Documents But ln -s keeps failing on that because of the spaces in the name. I know I found a workaround that previously , but I can't remember what it is.
