Slackware :: Uvesafb - 915resolution - Widescreen Fb On Intel - Doesn't Give Any Documentation

Dec 31, 2009

I'm using slack 12.2 with a custom 2.6.27.31 kernel with uvesafb already working- 1280x800 isn't natively supported by my graphics though :-(. Which is why I'm doing this.

So I'm trying to use this gentoo tutorial to get 915resolution working on my laptop for a widescreen framebuffer. Problem is, he doesn't give any documentation on what the files in the initramfs are supposed to be or do:

Code:

Can I put it in /sbin instead without breaking anything? I don't even know what v86d.real is, it doesn't exist on my system. If somebody could explain that, that would be great.

2.) There's also a script called "dump_bios" in the slackbuild of 915resolution that's supposed to go into /usr/sbin along with the 915resolution binary. If I'm moving this to /sbin, should the dump_bios script go with it? Well, since it's only a dd command, might as well post it:

Code:

I think those are the only questions I have right now, though I'm probably leaving some out.

Ah, here's one hurdle: /usr is on a different partition than /, so I can't just change the initramfs script (I think- isn't the initramfs called before everything in fstab is mounted?).

OpenSUSE :: Xvidcap And Screencast With Audio In General?

Nov 30, 2010

I'm wondering what I am missing. I have a logitec USB webcam with a mic. I use it for Team Speak, and Skype, so I know it works (I literally just placed a test call in skype to confirm...) I am trying to record a screen cast in OpenSUSE 11.3 and KDE4 with audio. Using any application that will do it.

I have tried gtkrecordmydesktop... but when I click on the "advanced" button to setup my audio... nothing happens... so I moved on. (it is supposed to present a window with options for setup... like sound source..)

I tried xvidcap, but I don't know what "device" to point the capture at. When I try to record from /dev/dsp (the default device) I get an error that says it cannot identify the file type. What "device" do I need to point to to get it to use my mic?

I have read about half a dozen forums about the issue, and many of them say that normally it is a mixer problem. I have systematically gone through my mixer item by item adjusting capture settings, mute, and volume levels on each item, then recorded to see if I got sound... and I got nothing. I know the device works, and I can get it to work in some programs (team speak, and skype), but How to I tell xvidcap to use it??? I found my device in the /dev list... it is /dev/snd/by-id/usb-046d_08c9_938E22B5-02 But when I point to that I get the same error.

I am not stuck on any one program to do this but I need to be able to record screen casts with synchronized audio in Linux. I am not afraid of the console or shell scripts... can anyone offer some suggestions... I have a working mic... I just need something that can use it.The best recommendation I've heard (so far) is running VNC and using camstudio in windows... but since my windows box is the same as my linux box... that is a bit difficult.... I really need a real linux solution.

General :: Crosstool From X86 To Alpha Lacks Detailed Debug Information?

Apr 7, 2010

I have a working build of crosstool - it was built for gcc 3.4.3 using glibc 2.3.5 going from 32-bit x86 linux to 64-bit alpha linux. As far as I can tell -- it compiles correctly (output of alpha emulation matches expected) but it has a major flaw. When I use the cross compiler and attempt to add detailed debug information, it compiles, but does not have the debug information. For example, when I execute:

> /home/leporter/crosstool/gcc-3.4.3-glibc-2.3.5/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc-3.4.3 -g -o hello main.c

OR

> /home/leporter/crosstool/gcc-3.4.3-glibc-2.3.5/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc-3.4.3 -gstabs -o hello main.c

I get a working alpha binary for hello world. BUT - when I run objdump - this is what I get

> /home/leporter/crosstool/gcc-3.4.3-glibc-2.3.5/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu-objdump -g hello

hello: file format elf64-alpha

/home/leporter/crosstool/gcc-3.4.3-glibc-2.3.5/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/alpha-unknown-linux-gnu-objdump: hello: no recognized debugging information

Frustratingly - if I use my x86 gcc version 3.4.6 to do the compilation (same arguments, just using the x86 compiler, not the cross compiler) - it correctly embeds the debug information.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Automatically Install Documentation

Jun 2, 2010

I'm used from Gentoo that the documentation (info-/man-pages) is installed by default (or at least it's possible to enable it by default for packages that don't do that). However I notice on my Ubuntu installation regularly that a lot of documentation is missing, for example info gcc gives me just the man-page of GCC and not the GCC manual, and for bison I don't get any info documentation.I'm aware that for these packages there are always *-doc packages, but most of the time I'm realizing that the documentation is missing when I'm offline, so there's no way to just install it then.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Annotate Tool Lags Badly During Screencast

May 28, 2011

I use an online screencasting java applet called screencast-o-matic to record my screen. While recording, I use Compiz's annotation tool. Normally this tool works great, but for some reason while I'm recording, it gets very laggy (drawing is way behind the mouse movements) and less smooth. For example, drawing a circle at a quicker pace not only causes lag, but also makes the circle look more like a polygon with straight lines. While this is happening, my CPU also spikes, with large strains showing up on the java process. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with an intel i7 processor. Any ideas as to why annotation lags badly while screencasting, and any ways to fix it,

General :: Complete Documentation Of File Mode Bits?

Jan 27, 2010

I'm trying to figure out the effects of some of the more unusual combinations of modes and file types. For instance, what does SGID do on a directory? What do SUID and SGID do on files that aren't executable? What effect does execute have on a FIFO?

Does anyone know where I can find the complete documentation for file modes under Linux? It's not in the chmod(1) man page. I can't find it in the documentation directory of the kernel tarball either. I thought it would be in the POSIX specs, but I can't find it if it is.

Fedora Installation :: 11: Yum Hides Detailed Info

Jun 19, 2009

After the latest yum updating, yum hides detailed info about what it will do when it work. Previous version of yum will list the packages to be updated, installed, or deleted, and then ask you if it is what you want; this updated yum show nothing but "Are you sure?"( or something equivalent ): you don't know what it will do at all! Seems you have type "y" and see what it will download and install or uninstall. I don't know if new yum has changed its notice method or if I need add some plug-ins for it to show me those info as it did.

Ubuntu :: Detailed Logging Of A Specific User?

Nov 9, 2010

we are in a place where we have to give an account (with sudo access...) to a user we don't completely trust (I am reminded of this comic). What we need to set up is some way of logging pretty much everything that this user does, especially what he does as root (via sudo or sudo -s). Now, I know that anything we do can easily be undone by another user with root access, but we feel that if he does disable logging we can use this as a really good excuse to revoke his access. So, does anyone know what logging stuff I'd have to set up to completely monitor one user (it is ok if we are monitoring everyone, but we'd prefer to watch one user if possible)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Doesn't Give Option To Install Along Side Of Other OS

Oct 14, 2010

I am installing ubuntu on a Dell m7750n machine that has the KSOD. I have done almost everything I can find to fix it. I was able to remove my data off of it using regedit....

So, I am sick of MS and found linux. I installed unbutu netbook on my netbook and it works like a charm.....

So, I went to install this on my desktop dell.... I have read of the many issue with this...

I was not able to boot from the CDlive as is. I kept getting a black screen with nothing. I then used the f6 to get into grub and then choose f6 to change the load options to load nomodeset and was able to load ubuntu from the drive, not install.

I would like to install ubuntu, but when I click on install from the 'tester' version it will not give me the option to install along side another OS (windows) that I see in the install ubuntu main website in the see how to do it.

I get two options:
Erase and use entire disk
Specify partitions manually (advanced)

Question: Can I install and select my own partitions using: [url]

Or, is there something wrong and I need to get that fixed before I install ubuntu?

Is this a DELL issue or KSOD issue?
