General :: Taking A Screencast In Backtrack 4?
Mar 4, 2010
I'm working on a tutorial using Backtrack 4 Live USB, and I would like to take a screencast of what I'm doing (not just screenshots)So far I have tried these application with limited success:-recordmydesktop -xvidcap -wink -istanbul -vlc -vnc2flvEach time I try the resulting files are generally choppy (at best 1 frame per second) and most don't even end up with a clear view of the screen each time.

I'm wondering what I am missing. I have a logitec USB webcam with a mic. I use it for Team Speak, and Skype, so I know it works (I literally just placed a test call in skype to confirm...) I am trying to record a screen cast in OpenSUSE 11.3 and KDE4 with audio. Using any application that will do it.
I have tried gtkrecordmydesktop... but when I click on the "advanced" button to setup my audio... nothing happens... so I moved on. (it is supposed to present a window with options for setup... like sound source..)
I tried xvidcap, but I don't know what "device" to point the capture at. When I try to record from /dev/dsp (the default device) I get an error that says it cannot identify the file type. What "device" do I need to point to to get it to use my mic?
I have read about half a dozen forums about the issue, and many of them say that normally it is a mixer problem. I have systematically gone through my mixer item by item adjusting capture settings, mute, and volume levels on each item, then recorded to see if I got sound... and I got nothing. I know the device works, and I can get it to work in some programs (team speak, and skype), but How to I tell xvidcap to use it??? I found my device in the /dev list... it is /dev/snd/by-id/usb-046d_08c9_938E22B5-02 But when I point to that I get the same error.
I am not stuck on any one program to do this but I need to be able to record screen casts with synchronized audio in Linux. I am not afraid of the console or shell scripts... can anyone offer some suggestions... I have a working mic... I just need something that can use it.The best recommendation I've heard (so far) is running VNC and using camstudio in windows... but since my windows box is the same as my linux box... that is a bit difficult.... I really need a real linux solution.

I use an online screencasting java applet called screencast-o-matic to record my screen. While recording, I use Compiz's annotation tool. Normally this tool works great, but for some reason while I'm recording, it gets very laggy (drawing is way behind the mouse movements) and less smooth. For example, drawing a circle at a quicker pace not only causes lag, but also makes the circle look more like a polygon with straight lines. While this is happening, my CPU also spikes, with large strains showing up on the java process. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with an intel i7 processor. Any ideas as to why annotation lags badly while screencasting, and any ways to fix it,

Trying to boot backtack 4 and I am running into issues. There are a few different options to boot from. And this happens with whichever option I choose.
Hda: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 {driveready seekcomplete error}
Hda: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x40 {lastfailedsense=0x40 }
Hda: possibly failed opcode: 0xa0
Other live distros work. I have tried 2 different isos and 4 different dvds. And the live boot works when I try it in virtualbox. Per a google search I turned plug and play os on and off in the bios. Haven't tried much else.

I'm trying to uninstall backtrack 4 and put windows xp on my hard drive. I bought the hard drive clean and immediately put backtrack on it I've never dual booted with windows. I kept getting the no-apic timer error when I stuck in my windows xp boot disk and booted from the CD. I then used my live backtrack 4 disk and deleted the partition so I have a blank hard drive (so I thought). I tried booting from the windows recovery disk and I kept getting the GRUB error 22.
I went back onto the backtrack 4 live cd and created a partition on my hard drive, tried to boot to the windows recovery disk yet again and now I'm getting the GRUB error 15. I've been at this for about 2 hours now and haven't found an answer anywhere. I've tried going sudo grub then doing find/boot/grub/stage1 and I get the error 15 in there as well. All I want to do is install windows. All solutions I've seen say to do fixmbr in windows command line but the only disk I can boot to is backtrack 4 so that's not an option.

In what started as a quest to get free wifi, I have recently gotten in way over my head. After unsuccesfully trying to use a virtual drive, I decided to erase my HDD on my laptop completely, wiping out my Windows XP and installed Backtrack 4 in it's place.
My goal amongst others, was to create a 20% partition for Backtrack and run XP on the rest of it. Well, I couldn't figure out how to do it. My only option was format and install backtrack.
So now I'm typing on my iPhone cuz I know absolutely nothing about Linux or how it works. My computer has no Internet. It doesn't recognize my Ethernet NIC, my wireless card and probably alot of other stuff.
SO ANYWAYS I don't want to give up. I'm ready to learn. I guess the first order of business is to get my Ethernet Card working so I don't have to type on this damn phone. So how do I do it?
Here is the hardware list:

I have tried to install the package flasplayer-nonfree, I have tried to install from source (I found on the net that he plugin directory for firefox was ~./usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins and I moved the libflashplayer.so there). I would consider myself an advanced user of Windows. I know some of the commands used due to my knowledge of PHP. I would like tri-booting Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, BackTrack 4 and Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit. Windows 7 is the main OS involved, which is on a HDD with about 800GB free space, so space isn't a problem. I have BT4 and Ubuntu ISOs downloaded and on DVDs ready to install.
Do I create partitions first in Windows or do I let the installer do it? What sizes would you recommend? What size for the swap partition?
What order should I install the two OS'? I already tried installing both of them, (Ubuntu first then BT4) but BT4 did not show up in grub when booting, even after updating grub through Ubuntu. I also think I make a mistake when installing Ubuntu as I didn't install any packages. I would like to use the gnome desktop environment on Ubuntu but every time I tried to install the package I got the error "package not found". So then I deleted both OS' and restored the MBR.
I'm using a 3G USB modem to connect to the internet. Will both of these distros work with it?

I'm triple booting Windows 7 32-bit (that's the only version I had), Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Backtrack 4 R1.
Windows 7 installed and runs fine. Ubuntu installed and runs fine. I try to install Backtrack 4 R1, create a / partition, create a /boot partition (do I need to create a /boot for Backtrack?), and I don't create a swap file because the Ubuntu swap file is already in there.
I click "forward", the install starts up, then I get "The attempt to mount a file system with type swap...yadda yadda yadda...has failed." I google this, I get some results talking about an mkswap command, but in my noobness, I don't understand.
Can Ubuntu 64 bit and Backtrack not share a swap file? I don't want to create 2 swap files because I've googled around and that looks like a bad thing to do.

I am facing a problem while installing backtrack 4.0 on my virtual box. After assigning a hard drive and booting from the live cd, i am receiving a error message as follows:
Loading, please wait...

(this statement gets repeated like four times with different logical block id.
SQUASHFS error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x5bb337b9
SQUASHFS error: unable to read is index table.
It is not the first time i install operating systems on virtual box though it is the first time i receive such an error with backtrack.
