Jan 5, 2011I have setup postfix and postfixadmin on a CentOS 5.5 server and the install appears to be ready to go. I have never used postfix and postfixadmin and I am having a hard time finding any documentation on how to setup and administer the postfix server with Postfixadmin. This is simply a test and alerting server and will not be hosting user mailboxes. I am only looking for the basics I am not going to need to setup anything complex

Jan 10, 2010I am operating Debian 5.0 kernel 2.26. In trying to clean up (I believe I was using a root terminal), I erased the directory /home/root. Since I have done that, I can not get to a root terminal, can not use synapse and a host of other administrative processed.
Now, when I boot the system, I can log in as a user (my version of Debian does not allow me to login as the administrator). Then, logged in as the user, I previously could select for example 'synapse', I would be given a screen to enter the Administrator password and then get synapse. Now, I am given the screen to enter the Administrator password, but once I enter it, I do not get synapse. I do get an error message
'can not find /home/root/.synapse' And of course, I erased the /home/root directory. Now I might just mkdir /home/root - except to do that I need a root terminal and I can not get that either - probably for the same reason.
I have tried using the boot disk and going to the rescue mode - except for some reason I can not mount a root directory. I believe it is because I am using LVM2 and my root directory must be in an LVM volume, but I can not figure out how to get to that using the rescue mode.

When I go to my win7 machine it I can browse to the machine (called jira2) and see the folder called homes, but when I click on the folder it says Windows cannot access \JIRA2homes. if I expand the details it says Error code 0x80070035 I am running Ubuntu 10.04.
Ubuntu Networking :: Administer A Server From A Remote Network?
Jun 27, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.4 Server, it's a local intranet server in back of a router in a "standard" home network. As I understand it laptops, PCs and the server are "hidden" from direct contact with the internet by Network Address Translation [NAT]. The router is a Linksys WRT54G all clients are connected to it, and the router itself is connected to a modem provided by the ISP. The server was given a static IP address. To admin the server I connect from a local client with SSH and get a command-line.
Is there a way to admin the server if I am a thousand miles away from this local network? Putting it another way, Is there a way to "tunnel" through to the server, give the user/pw and get a command-line from the internet? What software or hardware is needed?

Feb 7, 2011I have a web server with LAMP and wordpress on it. I'm going to administer wordpress from a different host on the same LAN as the server (the server doesn't have X and desktop software on it). When you build a site, with wordpress, from a separate admin host what exactly is happening?. Do browser requests from the admin host go to the web server, then out to the Internet, then back to the web server, then the results get displayed back to the browser on the admin host?. Or does it work differently?. Will such a set up work automatically after the installation and basic configuration of LAMP and wordpress on the web server?.

Does anyone know where I can find the complete documentation for file modes under Linux? It's not in the chmod(1) man page. I can't find it in the documentation directory of the kernel tarball either. I thought it would be in the POSIX specs, but I can't find it if it is.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup The Most Efficient Way To Remotely Administer A System?
Aug 7, 2010I am trying to setup the most efficient way to remotely administer an ubuntu system. So far I was successful in setting up ssh. I have the server running and made sure it only uses keys to authenticate and changed the default port. I can connect to the ssh-server. This system is behind nat and bots trying to break-in when I forwarded the port. I used the AllowUsers option, which helped in knocking back these rouge connections. I was not comfortable leaving a port open all the time, so I set up logmein Hamachi VPN and closed the ports that were open on NAT.
Now I use Hamachi and am very impressed. I use VNC in VPN. But Vino is slow, I tested x11vnc and it was slightly faster. I also tried to set up freenx but nxsetup file was missing. some one posted that file in the forums and suggested copying to the system but I was not sure if I want to download a script from the forum and use it. So for the time being, I thought I will just concentrate on X11vnc until freenx is fixed.
I would like to create a separate desktop on the server and use it to access remotely. This way we will not have to fight over the cursor (sounds funny but very frustrating). From what I understand x11vnc has this function inbuilt (uses vncserver). I cannot get it to work! when using ssh, at the remote machine's command prompt, if I type "evince xyz.pdf", it does not launch the "xyz.pdf". what am I doing wrong? When using VNC, how can I change between different users on the remote machines? Right now I can only use VNC in one account that I first setup. When I try to change to another user, vnc client goes blank. How can I get as much control of the remote system as possible? Right now I need someone to switch on the remote system and login to their account before I can VNC. Can I use ekiga inside VPN, I use skype right now and it's sometimes terrible with dropouts. I looked around and someone suggested using ekiga as it works very well over lan. How do set up ekiga so that I have a direct connection with the remote system? Is there any client that just takes the IP address and creates a connection? Mumble seems to be the popular choice, it's most suited to LANparties, I just need a connection between two systems. I am trying to set this up to help users with hardly any computer knowledge to use the system without any issues.

Periodically, the printer will not finish a print job or the software leaves some form of command that interferes with the subsequent jobs. I haven't had much luck finding the print queue. Typically, the print jobs are coming out of the OpenOffice word processing segment and I am not sure whether there is an actual problem or simply a page formatting error.

I have a Fujitsu S500 document scanner, and have been using the Windows software that came with it to scan and organize various documents (letters, bank statements etc). That software is of very poor quality. Besides, the drivers are proving very tricky to get working on 64-bit Windows 7.
Since I dual boot into Ubuntu, and the scanner works there out of the box, I am thinking of migrating my PDF workflow to Linux, hence my question...

Mar 13, 2010I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

Jul 29, 2010On PC-BSD 8.1 (KDE) I have four workspaces. I want to launch rdesktop 1.6 in one of them, full screen if possible (I'll settle for nearly-full in a window if I have to), and be able to do the following:
Switch between windows in the remote session using Alt+Tab. Switch between local workspaces using either the default Ctrl+F1 or what I've switched it to, my preferred Alt+F1.
It seems if I use the -K option, I get 2 but not 1. If I don't, I get 1 but not 2. Is there no way to do this? How can I tell rdesktop to send or not send a specific key combination?
General :: Automation - Good Console-based Program To Automatically Manage Music Collection?
May 31, 2011I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.
