Ubuntu Installation :: Doesn't Give Option To Install Along Side Of Other OS

Oct 14, 2010

I am installing ubuntu on a Dell m7750n machine that has the KSOD. I have done almost everything I can find to fix it. I was able to remove my data off of it using regedit....

So, I am sick of MS and found linux. I installed unbutu netbook on my netbook and it works like a charm.....

So, I went to install this on my desktop dell.... I have read of the many issue with this...

I was not able to boot from the CDlive as is. I kept getting a black screen with nothing. I then used the f6 to get into grub and then choose f6 to change the load options to load nomodeset and was able to load ubuntu from the drive, not install.

I would like to install ubuntu, but when I click on install from the 'tester' version it will not give me the option to install along side another OS (windows) that I see in the install ubuntu main website in the see how to do it.

I get two options:
Erase and use entire disk
Specify partitions manually (advanced)

Question: Can I install and select my own partitions using: [url]

Or, is there something wrong and I need to get that fixed before I install ubuntu?

Is this a DELL issue or KSOD issue?

Ubuntu :: Installing With Windows Vista - Doesn't Give The Option For Resizing Partition

Dec 31, 2010

Does Ubuntu 10.10 allow you to resize your windows partition and install ubuntu on the resized partition? I'm trying to get ubuntu installed on my laptop but the only option it's giving me is to delete all partitions and install ubuntu. I don't want to delete any partitions because I have backups on my second partition and the first partition has windows on it and I would like to keep it.

I've tried 10.04 and it doesn't give the option for resizing but I thought that one of the versions gives he option for this, is it 10.10? I've tried to manually resize but it won't let me because I have to many primary partitions, so I would have to delete the last partition to get it changed to extended correct?

Ubuntu Installation :: No "side By Side" Option In Netbook Edition?

Sep 26, 2010

After successful (dual-boot) installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop and laptop, I wanted to do the same for my netbook. I downloaded the Ubuntu Netbook edition [URL], and doing the same as before I wanted to select the " install them side by side" option. But in the installation menu (which is not the same as on screenshots on the [URL] where they use the screenshots from desktop edition) there is no such option. Is that only possible with the desktop distribution?

Ubuntu :: No 'along-side' Option When Trying To Install 11.04?

Sep 1, 2011

trying to install 11.04 on an older HP nc6220 laptop that is currently running XP Pro.While running Ubuntu from the thumb-drive has been successful, with everything working so far, the installation doesn't seem to be giving me all of the options that previous installs on other machines have.

For instance, when I click on the option to install Ubuntu, I'm only getting the option to install 'over' XP Pro and not along side it. There is however one other option, 'something else', where I believe that you can manually create the partitions, however it's all greek to me. Is there a specific reason why I'm not getting the option to install 'along-side' XP pro?

For whatever it's worth, when it does the checks just after clicking the 'install' option, it says that I'm good to go -as far as available space and internet connection. Do I just have to manually create the partitions, or is there anyway to get the option to install 'along-side' XP pro?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Won't Give Windows Option

Jan 4, 2010

my ubuntu install is running pretty well, but I need to boot into Windows 7 to print and convert some proprietary OneNote files. The trouble is that while my menu.lst shows a Windows option - and a few others, too, that don't seem to show up in grub2 - grub does not give me the Windows option. In fact, it seems to follow only the contents of grub.cfg.I have tried running sudo update-grub, and it does work, but does not resolve the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Does Not Give The Option To Boot To Windows

May 29, 2011

I unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

CD-0
HDD-1 (linux)
HDD-0 (windows)

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04, No Option To Load Along Side Of Windows 7?

Jun 19, 2011

The only options I get for loading Ubuntu 11.04 on my HP 2000-219DX Laptop is: 1. completely remove windows 7 and download Ubuntu, or 2. Manually partition the HD. I'm no computer wiz and am fairly new to GNU/Linux so I really don't know what the problem might be. I need the windows os for work but would prefer to run the Ubuntu distro for personal computing. I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10, so no Ubuntu for this laptop until I can get this problem solved.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Side-by-Side Hiccup?

Aug 10, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my home laptop after testing it (and loving it) on my work desktop just this morning. First time Ubuntu user and looking to be a long one, too.Anyways, I used the "install side-by-side" on both machines, but my laptop, with Vista, has a weird side effect. At the boot screen, I chose Windows Vista and it booted the recovery tool (I forgot the exact name). I was worried at first, but when I chose the actual Windows Recovery option below it to attempt to fix it, it booted Vista. So it seems in the process of partitioning the HDD for Ubuntu I somehow switched what each partition boots. Is there a way to correct this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Windows - Disc Does Not Give The Option To Replace

Oct 4, 2010

A while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?

I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.

Ubuntu :: Resolution Does Not Give The Option For 1366x768

Sep 20, 2010

I am having a bit of an issue with xubuntu's resolution detection. I currently have a monitor plugged into my machine, the xubuntu machine picks up the native resolution of 1920x1080, but for some reason it does not give the option for 1366x768. i find this weird because any monitor that can do 1920x1080 should be able to do 1360x768 as well. The machine is running an intel card, so manual resolution changing via nvidia control panel isnt an option. Im wondering, what is the simplest way to enter a custom resolution into xorg.conf, or any other easy methods of adding the 1360x768 option into the machine?

Ubuntu Installation :: Setup A Dual Boot System With XP Running Side By Side On Thinkpad T41?

Jan 28, 2010

have been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.

then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.

this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.

Ubuntu Installation :: Side By Side Upgrade - Copying APT Repository?

Jun 5, 2011

I'm wondering how much of my currently installed packages I can transfer to a new system...I have a HDD split in two. I have 10.4 on one half (/dev/sda6) - my working system for the last year or so since my last upgrade - and I have just installed 11.04 on the other half (/dev/sda. I wanted to check out the new version rather than upgrading. note I have my home folder and all stored data on other drives (zfs mirrored disks) - the boot disk is mostly OS related... I can overwrite /dev/sda8 with impunity as long as /dev/sda6 is intact....

What I want to do is capture the wide variety of packages I have installed on the old version and install them onto the new system - without using the dist-upgrade mechanism... I've had it fail too many times leaving me with a complete rebuild being required... is this (partially) possible or have too many core packages changed? I was especially thinking of something like [URL]

to obtain the list:

dpkg --get-selections | awk $2 ~ /^install$/ {print $1} > installedpackages

to reinstall:

cat installedpackages | xargs sudo aptitude install -y

another path would be to clone the entire /dev/sda6 onto /dev/sda8, boot into the duplicate and dist-upgrade that

Anyhow, I am running Kubuntu 9.04 and wish to switch to Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. I do still want to keep Kubuntu 9.04 as a boot up option temporarily in case I have major issues with Ubuntu. Ill also need to know how to get rid of Kubuntu after Im sure all is well with Ubuntu. Finally, there are a ton of boot options (different kernels Ive upgraded to) in Grub when Kubuntu boots up. How do I get rid of those? I also have a Windows XP partition that I boot into occasionally.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Make X11 Screens Be Side-by-side

Jul 20, 2010

It used to be a sysadmin/yast setting wherein you configured the display. It is now done under "personal settings"-->"display" meaning ordinary users can set their own preferences. That's really nice and all, but I'd rather it be sysadmin-only than have to go through several minutes of futzing around with it every blasted time I login. So, how can I make side-by-side permanent either for myself or for all the people who use my system (just me)? Thank you.

This module is only for configuring systems with a single desktop spread across multiple monitors. You do not appear to have this configuration.Since I obviously do and since I can get the desktops to spread across the monitors (after futzing for several minutes).

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Option Doesn't Appear In Installation / Solve This?

Dec 30, 2010

I have a MSI a6000 Laptop (that has given me a lot of problems installing Ubuntu.

I finally had to run Ubuntu from a CD in nomodeset

Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.

Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect Adsl Modem / Cannot Create Dial-up Option Where Can Give Username And Password?

Apr 9, 2010

I use an atom based processor of 1.60 ghz on intel d945gclf board. My ram is a zion 1gb @ 533mhz. Hdd is from western digital 80gb @ 7200 rpm. I have a broadband(dsl) connection from bsnl dataone (a state owned telecom service provider). I connect to internet via a huawei wa1003a ethernet/usb/wireless modem which is provided by my service provider. I need a username and a password everytime i connect to internet via dial-up.

I was using windows xp service pack ii. It was nice and easy installing my modem on xp either via usb or ethernet. Both ways it was easy as i have both the drivers with me.Only and main problem was fighting viruses. I tried many free downloadable anti-virus software to protect my maching. Initially they were fine. But after few months they stopped taking regular updates and became non-functional. I also tried symantec corporate v.10. But it has its drawbacks also. It made my machine perform like a snail.I had previously heard about linux based operating systems. But never tried one. As i am an ameteur in using computers windows xp was suiting my needs. Recently i saw an article in the newspaper about ubuntu which is a free open source operating system. And most important to me it is virus free. But here is a problem also. I cannot connect to internet. My ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala is not identifying my modem and a network between my modem and my machine cannot be established. Also i cannot create a dial-up option where i can give username and password.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade Option Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

Jul 2, 2009

I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.
