General :: Remapping Keys On Keyboard - Map A Specific Button To Xkill?
May 16, 2011
I am currently using xmodmap for remapping keys like Caps Lock on my keyboard. However, my keyboard has a bunch of keys on the top that are rarely used (Multimedia keyboard with buttons like Internet, Music, Next song, Mute etc)I want to remap these keys to specific commands (Not keys).
For example: Pressing the Internet button should fire up my Firefox (/usr/bin/firefox)(which happens only in Windows for me)Also I need to map a specific button to xkill.

How can I set keys to be remapped for one specific program in Linux? (More specifically Caps Lock -> Escape for gVim. I hit it accidentally too much to remap it in everything).

I have a laptop which has no function keys (F1-F12), but does have a row of arbitrary keys at the top (volume control, multimedia, etc.). I've been able to remap these keys using xmodmap (e.g. 'keycode 000 = F1 NoSymbol F1'). However, this means that I lose the original function. Is there a way (using xmodmap or otherwise) to set these keys to produce a different keysym (e.g. XF86AudioRaiseVolume) only when the Super* key is pressed?* I would have preferred Fn, but it doesn't show up in xev so I'm guessing that's not possible.

I am running a fully updated 9.10 with TightVNC. When I connect in through a TightVNC viewer, my keyboard is mapped wrong. If I type the keys: abcdefg... I get: asdfghjkl;... (the home row) I tried running this script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo "" > empty.keymap
xmodmap empty.keymap

I have a wireless keyboard with touchpad However the position of the mouse buttons is very unconfortable and so I would like to remap the mouse button to some kes on the keyboard.
I would like to use the media keys which are present on the keyboard. They are useless to me since most of the programs that I use have their own keyboard shortcuts for controls such as play, stop etc.
I mapped the keys using xev, and for instance I found that the "play" key mapped to keycode 172
by trying someting like
xmodmap -e "keycode 172 = Pointer_Button1"
nothing happens.

I have slackware 13.37-64 bit with xfce. I have a "microsoft wired keyboard 600" keyboard and want to remap it to use the right win key as ctrl. With xev i see that the keycode for the specific win key is 134.
Then i run:
Code:
But nothing changes. Even if i manually configure the .Xmodmap file in my /home i see no change at all.

After using an iPhone, I'm totally jealous of the ".com" key. Anyone know how to remap a physical key to type a phrase like ".com". Ideally, I'd like to set a rarely used key like the Windows button or an F-key to be a ".com" button and when you press shift it becomes a ".org" or ".net" button.

I'm trying out various windows mgrs and I'd love to be able to preserve certain key mappings...
...but what's REALLY important are the MOUSE KEYS!!!!!!!
I use the mouse left-handed. I can set that in Gnome or KDE easily, but if I go into, say Ratpoison, it's un-set again.
Is there a system-wide (or as close to it as possible) mouse setting?

I'm trying to write a new keyboard layout. I'm testing using Debian Squeeze and Kubuntu 11.04, both with KDE. It is important to solve this issue with a keyboard layout as opposed to playing with xmodmap or scancodes and keycodes because I need to leave other keyboard layouts intact and usable. For the time being the new layout is called Noah, implemented as a variant of US English. If this is done more easily by making whole new layout that is not a variant of another then I am willing to go that route.
First off, I am trying to move the Caps Lock key to the current location of the "B" Key. This is my code (the unshown parts of the files have not been touched):
Code:
The problem is that this configuration is also affecting the US English layout. When I press "B" the keyboard gives a B _and_ a Caps Lock! So typing I get output like this: "keybOARD". How do I restrict the B key to being Caps Lock only in the Noah layout?
Here is the homepage of the Noah layout: [url]

this may not be the right place to ask this, but my sister has a macbook and the keyboard does not want to work. i have looked online and i see that the main cause of this problem is in Leopard (correct me if im wrong). So i was wondering if perhaps using linux would solve this problem or if the problem is more hardware related than os related.
Also, how would i go about booting into a linux cd? since u need to enter some keyboard keys at startup and assuming that won't work, is there another way?

I don't care if this is done in the bios or a kernel module or software. Is there any way at all to do make the 'fn' key act as 'control' and the 'control' key act as 'fn' in linux running on a macbook pro?
PS. You can do this with software in OSX with the application KeyRemap4MacBook.

I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu. It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.
I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.

I've been given one of these ubiquitous usb-sleep buttons which is basically a supersimple usb-keyboard. It's a big button that sends a SLEEP keypress to the computer when you slam it. But that is pretty boring. I'd love to remap it to do something more fun but I can't figure out how to bind to only the sleep press from the button and not from my ordinary keyboard.
The button identifies as
Bus 001 Device 035: ID 1130:600d Tenx Technology, Inc.
I'd like to know if there's either
a way of mapping a key from a specific keyboard to an action OR a way of remapping the sleep key from a specific keyboard to a new key-code or something like that.

I want to remap my keys for a game I'm playing, for example WASD instead of arrows to walk, r, f, c to act like f1, f2, f3 and so on. I'm aware of xmodmap, but I want to do this just for one application and be able to use hotkey to toggle between this script and default setting. I've been trying to use AutoKey, but I cannot force it to work just for specific app. On windows solution is AutoHotKey, but it won't work through wine.

I have enabled ssh key based logins for one of my servers and disabled normal password based logins. It just occurred to me that the public key which I generated on my pc, and uploaded to the servers authorized_keys, may in fact only apply to my local PC / user account. So basically if my system crashes I would have no way to login to the server...? Is it not possible to "share" public keys so other people (PCs / accounts) can use them?

I'm moving in with my girlfriend and we want to connect our Linux Boxes via nfs. One problem: on my computer, I am user id 1001 and she is 1002, and on her computer, she is 1001 and I am 1002.
When mounting a filesystem via nfs, is it possible to remap users, so that 1001 is treated as 1002 on the remote machine and vice versa? If so, which nfs parameters do I need when mounting?

I got Sun Type 5 Unix keyboard which uses mindin-8 connector, attached to a PC through a special adapter which converts it to USB. The keyboard's distinctive features are Control key in the middle row (swapped with Caps Lock which makes it a Unix layout - much more comfortable for the pinky) plus a whole bunch of extra Sun keys, including such useful ones as "Copy", "Paste", and volume control. (Sun Type 5 keyboard has very good feeling to its keys, much better than Type 7 one). Those extra keys work as expected with this adapter in Gnome on OpenIndiana (OpenSolaris previously), but aren't supported out of the box on Debian. Looking around I didn't find any good up to date tutorial how to enable them on Debian or any other Linux. Did anyone try to do it?

Yesterday, after browsing for a while, my keyboard suddenly started to show different characters than typed. The keys are just typing different letters than pressed. For example, the j displays a 1, the k displays a 2, and so on. This only happens on the x server. On the terminal, before starting the x server, the keyboard works just fine.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

I am running Arch Linux with KDE 4.5. I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0
At the top of the keyboard are 5 extra buttons numbered 1 to 5. These are in addition to the function keys.
I ran xev to determine the keycodes generated by these buttons and nothing results. The keys do nothing in xev. How can I enable these keys to use for desktop switching?
