Hardware :: Won't Accept CTRL-ALT-Delete With The Installation Disk In The Drive Either

Dec 24, 2010

I just bought an Asus P50IJ-X3 NoteBook which came with Win7 pre-installed. On booting it up, it is taking me through a Win7 setup routine and won't let me get to the BIOS so that I can run my Ubuntu installation disk. It won't accept CTRL-ALT-Delete with the installation disk in the drive either.

Is there any way to get to the BIOS so that I can change the boot order and install Ubuntu WITHOUT setting up WIN7? At this point, I havn't done anything with the machine so aside from return shipping and the re-stocking fee, I should be able to return it. I'm afraid that if I go through the whole setup routine and write stuff to the disk, the vendor (Newegg) may not be willing to take it back.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Files From Cancelled Format On Windows Drive With LiveUSB?

Apr 13, 2010

I've been scouring the internet and these forums for answers and have yet to figure anything out. Here's the situation: My boss's computer (HP running Vista) decided it didn't want to boot anymore. (Error: Cannot find Bootlog.xxx) My boss used a recovery disk to attemp a 'repair' but unintentionally began a format cancelling it at 1-3%. I created a LiveUSB that I can boot off of, and Ubuntu recognizes 52gb of Data on the drive. However when I go to view the drive nothing is there. I am assuming that the 'page file' was deleted although the rest of the information wasn't.

My question is: Is there anyway to access this data although the information telling the computer what is there and where it is has gone AWOL?I'm trying to get the payroll information off of the computer so she can finish her taxes, I will be working on this all night. If anyone wants to provide real time help my AIM screen name is 'Fryphax'.

Ubuntu :: Erase External HD W/o Erasing Main Drive?

Apr 12, 2010

I have an external hard drive I use for backups. This drive has entire operating system on it(don't know which one, but I think it's intrepid), from when I did a complete backup eons ago. I have added new stuff since then. I tried to erase the system files on it, since they take up space and aren't likely from my current system. I don't run the drive all the time, only when I'm backing up files. The rest of the time, it's off. When I did this, I couldn't run any programs on my main computer( the bin directory was gone), and it wasn't in my trash on the main drive or the external drive. I tried re-installing without erasing my home directory on the main drive; it went okay, until I tried to open a file.

My /home apparently had nothing in it, so i downloaded my backup files, only to run out of room. The files were there; I just couldn't see them. I tried to open several programs, but was told I didn't have root access. Finally, I just reformatted the whole drive and re-installed everything. What I'd like to know is:1. How do I clear the junk from the external drive without hurting the main drive?

2. Why did erasing the old bin file on the external drive whack the same file on the main drive?3.Several times before, I have upgraded or re-installed xubuntu, leaving my home directory intact. The upgrade either can't find my files, or forgets half my settings. How can I keep my files and settings? I hate having to re-install everything from scratch each time I upgrade. I thought having a separate /home directory was supposed to protect all that.

Ubuntu :: Can't Erase Files On External Hard Drive?

Dec 19, 2010

I bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.

So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".

Ubuntu :: Erase It And Reinstall Windows Xp

May 2, 2011

job installing windows XP and a partion ubuntu (?) on my desktop compooper. telling him i have no knowledge of ubuntu, he still isntalled it. I am giving this computer to my parents, and want to just put Windows XP on it. here is what a half *** job means, windows XP doesn't have the sound and ethernet driver. he couldn't find them to install them onto the computer...and i keep getting errors all over the place when i try and do things on ubuntu.

I downloaded Windows XP Professional 64bit Corporate yesterday and burned it to a CD. Restarted the computer so it will boot but it just keeps going to the screen asking which system I want to log in to. NOW HERE IS THE KICKER.... when i try to go onto the windows XP side, it is coming up with an error that says I need to activate windows. when i click yes, it says i have already activated. when i click on the user it repeats what i just stated. so now i can't even get into the windows xp side.

I would like to completely erase my hard drive and install Ubuntu 10.04 on again fresh. I think some files have become corrupted from a power cut that I had last night whilst the laptop was plugged in (and turned on).

I'm not bothered about completely wiping the hard drive since there are no important files on it (at most there are just a lot of packages I downloaded from the repro...) I don't have any Windows installations either - it's just a simple; wipe the hard drive and reinstall all over again case
