General :: Finding A Software That Allow To Scan Documents To PDF/A?
Jun 9, 2010
PDF/A is one of the best formats to archive my documents. What Linux software would allow me to scan documents to PDF/A? A PNG→PDF/A or TIFF→PDF/A tool would be fine too.

My needs require the ability to scan multiple documents each day. Ever since 10.04 my HP J4580 All-in-One scanner operation has progressively become worse. With 10.10 it completely quit working. As is so often the case, the HP J4580 All-in-One works flawlessly in Windows so I know it is strictly a Ubuntu related problem. Do a search of my threads and you will see that I have receive very little help with this issue. that is another problem I have been having.I have reverted back to 9.10 and all my scanning issues are resolved. I have followed several threads offering solutions with no success. I know the issue is with the removal of xsane from Ubuntu. Versions after xsane 0.996 is when the problem surfaced. On my system (desktop) I have been greatly disappointed with the last 2 releases. Firefox has even started having random crashes in 10.10. I tire of spending so much time trying to correct these issues.I will not quit using Ubuntu but I will not be using the latest two releases for a while. 9.10 worked great and I will keep it until support ends. You get what you pay for so I will not blast Canonical or the software developers. I would hope that prior working hardware would not lose functionality with the release of a new OS version.

I am trying to find an application with low dependencies ( not okular ) that i can use to book mark my pdf's and ebook's. I am reading tutorials and its driving me nuts not being able to book mark my position or key topics. It would be nice to have something to manage all my books. I am currently using evince and its ok. As stated above I need to make things more...well..readable. I currently use gnome. I dont want to switch to kde. Okular worked well in the past; however, once all the requirements are met its almost kde.

I have a Mandriva server with a lot of documents (mostly in pdf format) on it. I want to be able to search on this server for certain documents, via the browser. Most preferably searching through the full contents, but a search on file name only would also do. When a document is found, it should be able to download it from the server, or view it on-line.

I am using Ubuntu, now installed KDE (kubuntu) and I have Bluetooth working and enabled but for some strange reason the bluetooth scan is not finding any devices in spite of the fact that I have my mobile phone with bluetooth on and discoverable. My laptop is HP Touchsmart tm2 2102tu. Here's output of my hciconfig -a

Neither hcitool scan nor scanning with Gnome or KDE bluetooth settings is working for me.

I'm looking for a software to compare two documents (for example .odt) side by side or highlighted in graphical way. I want to do the same as Word 2010 Compare Documents (see this: Microsoft Word 2010: View Two Documents Side By Side). I found in OpenOffice something a bit similar that, see in <Edit> -->> <Compare documents>, but it's not a good visual presentation. I'm looking for a software who give me the possibility to see the differences between two documents side by side, or highlighted.

How can I change the mountpoint of my partition /media/documents to /documents.This is a partition of sdb and a fixed disk. The reason is that /media/ sometimes creates ghostdirectories while /Windows/C never does so, programmes writing/reading from this partition therfore don't work if a ghostdir_ exists.(BTW Suse is on sdb5 and sdb6. on sda is windows and used to be Ubuntu, the Suse-swap is sda5. Windows is out of use.)

I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu. But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:
Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.
I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

I spent about a year on linux and had all sorts of very very important documents and files saved in my system. I cannot stress the importance of these documents and know that I am retarded for not making backups. We will start another thread for people to yell at me if you want. Heres the deal, XP was installed on this computer yesterday. They did a boot from disc install, deleting the partition and installing a fresh copy of XP.
Now XP is back on this cpu. My question is, is there ANYWAY long, short, whatever that I can find those files or maybe go back to my old install of ubuntu? I've heard a lot about bootloaders and whatnot but I have to get those files. I have a bunch of assignments due and need these files.

I have a workflow whereby I scan paper documents into searchable PDFs using a Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 document scanner. I am not a great fan of the bundled software, but it's dead simple to use: place a stack of paper at the top, push the green button and a searchable PDF comes out. Now, I'd like to do something similar on Linux (Ubuntu 10.10). The scanner is supported out of the box.I've looked at gscan2pdf and XSane:
XSane looks powerful, but not really suitable as a workflow solution;gscan2pdf is a bit closer to the "push the button, get the PDF" ideal, but still not 100% there.

I have just started using puppy linux 5.2 ( lucid) which has transformed my old PC . The only real problem encountered is that I cant get my HP 1050C to print or scan . Running the cups wizard gives me the option of the printer and I found a driver in the list. The table below shows the printer settings being used . Sending jobs or maintenance to the printer has no effect although the cups system says they are complete . Xsane does not see the scanner . The printer functions fine under windows . I am obviously missing something very basic
Description:HP Deskjet 1050 J410 series
Location:table
Driver:HP DesignJet 1050C PS3 v3010.106 (color)
Connection:usb://HP/Deskjet%201050%20J410%20series?serial=CN0C133YFV05 HW
Defaults:job-sheets=none, none media=unknown

What Linux software would you recommend for managing a library of searchable PDF documents?
I have a Fujitsu S500 document scanner, and have been using the Windows software that came with it to scan and organize various documents (letters, bank statements etc). That software is of very poor quality. Besides, the drivers are proving very tricky to get working on 64-bit Windows 7.
Since I dual boot into Ubuntu, and the scanner works there out of the box, I am thinking of migrating my PDF workflow to Linux, hence my question...

I am an astronomy student using Ubunut 10.04, and a frequent user of IRAF ( an *nix image processing application geared toward astronomy). IRAF produces, amongst other things, a text document with various values on it (example below).
Code: K IRAF = NOAO/IRAFV2.14.1 version %-23s
#K USER = name %-23s
#K HOST = Balthazar computer %-23s
#K DATE = 2010-04-29 yyyy-mm-dd %-23s
[Code]...
Now, the information I'm actually interested is the X and Y coordinates down towards the bottom (in this case, 973.505, 271.474).
I have about 800 of these output text files, and I was wondering if there's any sort of script or command that could go through them (presumably reading from a list of file names), and extract the coordinates. Ideally, the output would be a list of coordinates (i.e. X-coordinate, Y-coordinate).

Even after changing the file name to Document, Doc, Docs, etc. It always makes it the default directory. It's not a "Deal-Breaker" with me deciding between Ubuntu 11.04 Classic and Kubuntu 11.04, but it's kind of annoying. How do I change it to my home directory *I.E /home/theif519* instead of /home/theif519/Doc* ?
Is there a file I have to edit or something?

I have recently installed Puppy Linux because my Windows OS crashed and I could not find the license number and did not want to pay $180 for a new one.So far This OS looks good but quite different to Windows so I am having difficulty finding how to retrieve my photos and documents from the computer.
I have been able to find the relevant files but I can't see how to copy or print them.
I would like to put them onto CD and transfer them to my laptop which is running Windows 7.

Notwithstanding that I might not want to do this because of the large file size, how would I scan a multi-page document into one image file (probably a jpeg)? The only way I know how is to, after making seperate jpegs of every page, manually pasting the images below each other in a photo editor, which of course is a lot of trouble.
