I just updated to 10.10 and now when I go to places and try to open my documents, etc, nothing happens. I have files there and can access them with open office. Is this fixable or is it the way 10.10 works?
View 3 RepliesI recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
There is a problem that I'm experiencing, and that is that the link to Documents and the link to Pictures is missing from the Places menu, and I don't know how to put them back.

Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.
I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.

Something very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to access my personal folder Music by clicking Places>Music I get the Appearance Manager instead, actually if I click on Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, or Downloads the only thing that appears is the Appearance Manager. I was trying to make it my default player. All I did was right mouse click on my folders, but I remember selecting anything!
When I un-install VLC player everything works fine.
After installing auto upgrade to allow temporary access to root directory, the Places menu does not open file folders. If I switch users it works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying out bash scripts to see how to mount NetGear readyshare. I can do so using Nautilus and selecting Network but I wanted to be able to do so from a script. I don't know how it happened but when I clicked on Places/Documents it opened a terminal instead of Nautilus. This applies to all the folders in the Places menu but I can still get Nautilus by clicking Places/Computer and below.
I'm using ubuntu 10.4, nautilus 2.30.1
My latest problem: (Ubuntu 10.04)My "pictures" folder is missing from the "Places" menu. It used to be there....I didn't do anything...but now it's gone. I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? It's not a "Deal-Breaker" with me deciding between Ubuntu 11.04 Classic and Kubuntu 11.04, but it's kind of annoying. How do I change it to my home directory *I.E /home/theif519* instead of /home/theif519/Doc* ?

I have a problem with regards to opening the open office. every time I open a document, I cannot view it. It says the application cannot be started. The user interface language cannot be determined. What's the possible cause on this? How will i correct this error?

I can open Computer, partitions and devices, just not the first 7 folders which i think are bookmarks.

Ok, I eventually solved it. Appears I had inadvertently selected another program as default folder openenr. Just opening any folder with right click - open with - folder openenr reassigned nautilus and opens Places folders ok.

View 4 Replies View Relatedjust want to report "Right Mouse Click Freeze" on Ubuntu 10.10. When I click on anything with my right mouse button to open options menu it freezes and does not open menu. Sometimes when I shake my mouse left/right a bit it opens that menu, but this does not work always. It seems like xserver issue, but I'm not sure since I'm not expert in linux yet. It's very annoying issue that I would like to resolve asap.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).
when I click on any folder under places. for example if I click on my home folder or video folder. Or any folder under places. I get a document viewer message in Red. Saying "Unable to open document" "cant open directory" how I can fix this?? im on 11.04

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 12 with Gnome and I have a slight problem with my places menu. I have entries in the list that I would like to remove, but cannot figure out how. I multiboot Fedora with Windows 7 and windows 98. My Places menus looks something like this:

Desktop
Music .....
Now, if you notice there are 2 entries for both my 'Storage' and 'Windows 98' partitions. On of them will actually open up a window showing the contents of the partition, the other displays an error which basically says "Unable to mount, drive is already mounted". Right clicking on the entry has the same effect as left clicking, it just brings up the error message. They do not appear in the Bookmarks menu.
