Mar 3, 2010I have printer in CUPS that due driver problems (hp 1010) form time to time goes into pause. I would like to write a shell script that will be once per hour resuming printer in cups.But I have no idea after googling for couple of minutes how to resume printer from shell command line.

Jun 30, 2011I'm having a hard time trying to print documents to PDF via cups-pdf at the command line and get all of the nice formatting options that the GUI print spooler dialogs provide. I know how to do "lpr -P Generic-CUPS-PDF-Printer filename" to get a general file printed to a PDF, but this method clearly is missing all of the nice formattingptions that get passed when using a GUI print spooler (margins, fonts, dpi, paper size, etc..). I tried to use ps to capture whatever command is being sent by the spooler but couldn't figure it out, since I'm not really sure what commands get called by the spooler

I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?

Oct 6, 2009I work at The University of Alabama as a sysadmin on various HPC resources and also provide support for faculty using Unix systems. I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed.This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

Jan 4, 2011I am running Slackware 13.1 64bit and the cupsd config is the one pretty much the default. I can connect to it from my browser at http://localhost:631 and play around with the options with no problem. I have been following a previous post on configuring a PDF printer [URL]. I am at the point of using lpadmin on the command line to create the pdf printer with the adobe distiller ppd file. When I try to do so it just hangs and eventually I get a connection timeout. When I do an lpinfo -v I get the same thing. If I try lpinfo -h localhost:631 the request returns immediately with nothing. I tried to create the PDF printer through the cups web ui but I did not get far.

Jan 20, 2011I'm running Red Hat Linux and CUPS 1.2.4. I can print a test page to a Win 7 shared printer ok. However, when I issue the lpr command from a user or root, it won't print. The CUPS message is "Remote host did not accept data file (1)" and the job just hangs till I cancel it. The only thing I can tell that is different is that when the test page from CUPS is generated, it uses user "guest". When I try to print it using the lpr command, the user is "eddie" or "root". I tried adding a user account named "eddie" to the Win 7 box, I can print successfully from both CUPS and users on several other Win XP boxes.

Mar 29, 2009I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:

Jul 27, 2010I have a Sony TZ270N running Ubuntu 10.04 splendidly. The Sprint Mobile Broadband works great, but it's a bit cumbersome to activate. Specifically, to get it to work I need to:

Then I wait another five seconds, right-click on the networking icon, choose "Enable mobile broadband", then left-click on the networking icon, and choose "Connect to Sprint Connection". I do this multiple times a day, and it's just a bit of a pain, especially when in a hurry. Accordingly, I'd like to script it so I can do the whole thing with a single command.
I've already put the above echo statements into a script and it works great; is there any way to script the actual start of the PPP session itself -- with the caveat that I'd like the networking icon to accurately reflect the latest state?
(In other words, I don't want to bypass the networking icon and just launch the PPP session in the background -- I want it to show that I'm connected, and still let me manage the connection via the icon after connected.)

Jun 6, 2010I'm trying to setup a headless CUPS server, but no matter what I do, I can't add a new printer. Not using the web interface, or the GUI of another computer connected to the CUPS server.I always get to the point shown in the attached screenshot, and then I am asked for a password, which never works. I've practically slaughtered my cupsd.conf, and it now looks like this:

it looks like the above should tell CUPS to never ever ask for authentication, but as you can see in the second screenshot, it still does!
