View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm from a Solaris (printer.conf) background and having trouble setting up a printer on the network. My CentOS box does not have a GUI interface available. I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?
Here's the printer.conf from a Solaris machine that works:

And the printers.conf from the CentOS box:

I work at The University of Alabama as a sysadmin on various HPC resources and also provide support for faculty using Unix systems. I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed. This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

View 7 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded from FC11 to FC12, and lost the ability to print to my network printer. Couldn't figure it out, though I can continue to print from an old FC9 server, so I know it's not the print server, Netgear PS110 or the printer Samsung ML-2510. In desperation, I upgraded to FC13, and still no dice. Don't think it's a network problem as I've tried with a disabled local firewall (I'm behind a network firewall) and even disabled SELinux.
If I go through system-config-printer, I probe for network printers, and can discover the print server, but the queue is wrong (it has two ports, P1 and P2.) Neither PASSTHRU or manually written P1, the connected port, work. It will spool, then disappear. I'm using the Samsung ML-2150 Driver which I understand works for this printer and used to work on FC9, because the printer is not listed directly in CUPS' database.
I love Puppy linux, but installing the printer has defeated me. Could some kind soul step me through the install process.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am going to compile and install my first linux application from the command line. The program is the port scanner program NMAP, and I am looking at the documentation to learn how to do it. I saw this thread [URL], and I just want to make sure I understand what it is I'm doing.
bzip2 -cd nmap-5.35DC1.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
cd nmap-5.35DC1
./configure
make
su root
make install
"bzip2 -cd nmap-5.35DC1.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -"
Here I am calling the bzip2 program to work with a specified file. look for the file nmap-5.35DC1.tar.bz2 in the current diretory (-cd) and to pipe (redirect) something, this is where I get lost, I think. And I know what x & v mean but not f, or what that has to do with the previous commands.
cd nmap-5.35DC1
Chage to the named directory.
./configure
I assume this is a command?
make
Builds an executable
su root
make install
not sure what the difference is between this and the above.
