General :: Selecting A Font When Printing A Text File From The Command Line?
Jul 29, 2011I don't understand why this is so difficult.In the old days, there was lpforms which allowed some formatting. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lp package.cgi-...-cgi?lpforms+1In the old days, lpr allowed you to select a font in the command line with -1=fontname. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lpr package.htmIn the old days, printers had fonts installed on them that you could access. Modern printers don't seem to have this. So now I still need to be able to select a font when I print certain text files from the command line but it seems this is impossible. I've been working with instances and lpoptions, which allows me to do a lot of other things I need like orientation and margins and even set the font size, but I still cannot choose a font other than the default.

Feb 24, 2009I'm from a Solaris (printer.conf) background and having trouble setting up a printer on the network. My CentOS box does not have a GUI interface available. I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?
Here's the printer.conf from a Solaris machine that works:

May 28, 2011with the current Musicbrainz fiasco with Rythmbox and Sound Juicer I am now using RipperX. I like RipperX, but I would like to know if there are any command line parameters or some way of selecting the CD/DVD drive. It appears that RipperX can multi-task which would save me some time.

Aug 11, 2011I'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........

Oct 6, 2009I work at The University of Alabama as a sysadmin on various HPC resources and also provide support for faculty using Unix systems. I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed.This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

Apr 1, 2010I was having so much trouble with ubuntu 8.04 that I deleted off my computer and did a fresh install of 9.10. I downloaded the 64 bit iso from the internet, burned it to a disc and installed it. When it asked if it should be the server version I thought I said no. Now when I boot it only boots to the server version and all I get is command line. Can I get out of this and get my regular ubuntu screen back or did I install the wrong version?

Mar 29, 2009I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that

Doesn't seem to matter though - it is almost like it isn't using the php.ini file at all

May 17, 2011The last time I got involved with printers and fonts, printers had tractors and ribbons and the only codes in use were ascii and ebcdic. So even if I could remember it would be out of date. I've written a C program that writes a text file. I want to print it. I run it through expand and send it to lp, but it comes out in an undesirable primitive font.
Once upon a time, one sent a string of commands to the printer telling it what font to use and what size, etc. I dont think this is done anymore, and if it is I dont remember how to do it. I assume programs embed in their output instructions in some common format which tell this stuff to the printer - in my case a HP1020. I've been looking on the search engines but I haven't found the magic words to find what I want. how to get my output formatted. If it involves some escape sequences in the file, maybe a pointer to a description of which does what?

Oct 6, 2010Running: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.2 (Tikanga) I need to be able to automate transferring a few files over from one server to another using scp or the sftp protocol. I have received a text file which looks like a key file along with username and passphrase information for the target server in question.
Instructions were given to me to import the provided text file in puttyGen then save the imported key as a private key to be used by scp or sftp. My assumption is this is for windows utilities, which I am not using. My frustration comes in trying to automate logging into this server via sftp or scp to automate some file transfers. I am asked for a password every time because the public and private key methods failed to find my keys. How can I call scp or the sftp utilities and use the provided key file (the one I generated using puttyGen or the original one provided to me) to login to this server? I've tried taking the generated ppk file from puttygen and adding it with the ssh-add command but that still did not work.

Apr 14, 2010Total, total noob here, but I would like to know if this is possible, and maybe some tips on how to do it if it is.I just got myself a dedicated server, and I guess I assumed I could just remote control it via my own screen, much like using vnc or remote desktop, but that wasn't the case.The server has Debian 5.0, a "minimal install" is what they called it, I assume it's just installed and not configured at all.1. Connect to the server, and I guess the only way is via telnet? Since I have no VNC or remote desktop (yeah, microsoft, I know, but I don't know what it's called for Linux/GNU).2. Can I install VNC or somehow "activate" or "open" the GUI via telnet, much like a remote desktop kind of solution? I have used Debian's GUI on my laptop a couple of times, and I'm a total Windows-user, but I can navigate the graphical interface.
