View 4 RepliesI notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?
I am trying to install either Ubuntu or CentOS server in text mode only. The problem I am having is that the hardware that I am trying to install it on has no vga output, I can only connect to it via console cable. I am able to boot from USB CDROm or flash drive but unfortunately since the hardware does not have a gpu (atleast none that I'm aware of) I am unable to get past the boot screen. If someone can point me in the right direction or know where I would be able to download the text install of either OS, that would be awesome.

we need to log web access of a certain set of users for analysis. We decided to setup a proxy server which just logs all the requests but does not do anything else like caching/access control etc.All users will be using a fixed set of computers and hence we can redirect their requests to the proxy. I came across Squid, but found it to be too heavy for our requirements. Is there any other proxy-server software that is good enough for what we want or is Squid the only way?

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I also need to let anonymous users get access to it.
I want to follow the instructions to configure a PXE server based on Fedora, the instructions written in 2005, suggests Fedora Core 4. I need to have; tftp-server, dhcp, httpd, syslinux. Which I understand can be install subsequently but are included in FC4.
I cannot find a link to FC4, I guess it's out of date now and no longer available, which server should I now download
It seems that NIS/NIS+ and Redhat Dir Server/CentOS Dir Server have similar functions.
What are important differences between them?
I have a Centos 5.5 server and I had a problem with its time because it was 1 one hour ahead of my local time. I installed and activated NTP and I created a link for /etc/localtime:
Code:
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Mexico_City /etc/localtime
I reboot the server and waited for 1 hour but the time wasnt correct. The server's BIOS clock has UTC time so I edited /etc/sysconfig/clock file replacing:
Code:
UTC=false for
UTC=true
I reboot the server and waited for 1 hour but the time wasnt correct. After breaking my head for about 1 hour, I realized that there is a directory /usr/share/zoneinfo/Mexico and changed my link for /etc/localtime
Code:
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Mexico/General /etc/localtime
And It worked. What is the difference between America/Mexico_City and Mexico/General files in /usr/share/timezones, they should be identical but of course they are not?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to make virtual name apache server in order to run http and https on my domain, but I found in apache documentation that it is not supported. I ask here because the docs can be old and in the newer version that could be possible.
I use apache vesrion 2.2 and this is waht I want to make:
1. configure my domain name to use http protocol
2. configure subdomain.domain to use https protocol
For now I can start https only in the domain and subdomain but can't do that separately.

The types of broadcasting uses on TCP/IP that I know about are:
1. ARP on IP
2. DHCP on IP
3. Routing table updates.
I'm in a bit dilemma on how to set IP based forwarding to specific URL. I have internal staff from 207.173.4.xxx going to www.domain.com. I would like to forward them to www2.domain.com when they are offsite and working remotely from different IP address range. Is there way to achieve this with Apache? If not, is there a software solution to achieve this effect?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a very simple set up.With Network Manager I can have my laptop act as a router (sharing all connections).I also have apt-cacher-ng as a debian package cacher.I would like to set up iptables to filter only the urls that are meant for a debian package cacher.
For example:I could use a "forward all" rule:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3142
Except then I would get a bunch of error pages every time I tried to do normal navigating.My question (again) is: Can iptables handle forwarding only on a specific url? If so how?Or is there another solution? (prferably without full fledged software like squid)
How can one create their own web-based email server, under these constraints:

View 6 Replies View RelatedCan anyone explain the difference between IOWAIT%/IDLE%/LOAD AVG? We have a 3 servers (oracle rac) attached to a SAN. When we added another CPU to our 3rd server, the IOWAIT across the oracle rac dropped a lot. We used to get pretty high IOWAIT % before. So I don't really understand how the extra CPU could do this. I thought the IOWAIT % is high because the server is waiting for the SAN, so I thought the SAN was the bottleneck. So I don't really understand the difference between the 3 things (iowait, idle and load avg).
