Mar 7, 2011today some one of my friends removed /boot/grub directory from my pc. i tried both
root (hd0,0) Kernel /vm - but it's not coming (coz that file is already removed.
and after
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
it showed grub file is installed but i couldn't find
/boot/grub/grub/conf or vm linuz
and after i used rescue method.
/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda
tried this method but still couldn't make effect.

The installed Debian Lenny boots in a normal way.

I know it is probably going to be something obvious, but in the context of installing a Xen fully virtualised guest there doesn't seem to be much difference. After booting both ask for the location of the install tree and proceed happily.

May 18, 2010When I compile a custom kernel with this command: make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers and then install the .deb, there's no initrd in /boot and I have to create it manually. I've thought that the --initrd option should take care about this, but somehow it doesn't.
It behaves like this for about two years at least (since I've compiled my first kernel). Of course, it's no big deal to create it manually, I was just wondering whether do I do anything wrong or whether should I fill a bug report..

Now im doing it like this:

mkfs -t ext2 -F -m 0 -b 1024 -i 1024 initrd
But i would like to move to cpio, because with dd, if you add something new, you might need to change the count. Also cpio is used in distro's like Fedora and Ubuntu.

Jul 26, 2010I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

Aug 31, 2010I use Linux (Gentoo) since many years. I always used gentoo-kernels which I configured and compiled. Once it was done I usually got a "vmlinux"-file and a "bzImage"-file. I always used to copy the "bzImage"-file to my boot partition and I configured Grub accordingly and everything was fine.
Last week I compiled in my VM not only gentoo-kernels, but as well a xen-kernel (for my domU). Once it was done compiling the Xen-kernel (used the usual command "make -j2 && make modules_install") it didn't generate a "bzImage"-file, but a "vmlinuz" file. I therefore took the vmlinuz-file, copied it as usual to the boot partition and configured Grub to use that one, but with this time Grub doesn't want to boot and returns each time the error

I tried with both "vmlinuz" and "vmlinux" but neither worked. I have no clue what I should to - should I try to somehow generate a "bzImage" (tried "make bzImage" after a "make clean", but it tells me that it doesn't find any bzImage to create), convert vmlinux/z to bzImage or make Grub somehow boot using vmlinuz?
Are there any "tricks" to make Grub boot using a vmlinux/z?
I can say that it's not a problem of the partitioning or setup config in Grub, as in the same grub.conf I have other 2 kernels (bzImage) which boot without problems only the config section that has to do with the vmlinuz/x doesn't want to boot.

convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

Oct 2, 2010I have a Lenny inside a xp. I changed my installation and make a boot partition , a home directory, and a system directory. now I reinstall my xp and do this:
find /grub/stage1
root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0,6)
and grub menu found! but when I clicked on debian, can't boot and I have a message about can't boot from this vmlinuz ( or any thing similar!) , click on any key and then it come back to grub menu. my debian is on (hd0,9) and (hd0,6) is my boot partition.

Sep 15, 2009I have and IBM e-Server, with 256RAM, however when I force the fedora installation to be perfomr in grapgical mode, Anaconda return a message that say that I dont have enoght Memory to perform the graphical installation. To my uderstanding It requiere 192MB of Memeory for a graphical installation.
What I'm doing wrong?, or is that the vmlinuz is booting into RAM and taking most of the space?

May 25, 2011I'm using an acer aspire one netbook and attempting to install ubuntu 11.04 on it using flash drive. I extracted the installer using the universal usb installer. Anyway as soon as I get to the ubuntu installer screen it won't let the installer begin and says this: "could not find kernel img:/casper/vmlinuz. I have tried many things including typing in this:"vmlinuz initrd.img" and extracting the data to the flash drive again but nothing has worked.

Sep 21, 2009I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

Oct 16, 2009I have installed Centos 5.3 64 bit version and run yum update so the system is up to date. However, I have noticed the kernel version that is installed is:
uname -a
Linux elektra.chemresearch 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 03:28:30 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and when attempting to install from ATrpm.net the nvidia driver I get this message:
yum install nvidia-graphics169.07 nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-`uname -r`
...
Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5 is needed by package 1:nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5-169.07-94.el5.x86_64 (atrpms)
Now, yum says the kernel is up to date so how can I get the nvidia driver rpms to install? The entries in /boot are:
vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5
vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5
I have checked to make sure that the update repo is enabled. There were quite a few updates applied after the initial installation and the initial kernel was updated as the yum log indicates and also the entries in /boot.
Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Web Server Not Sending Images?
Nov 7, 2010I have been messing around with a template from Dreamweaver and went and uploaded it to my web server last night to see if it worked. the template works when i view it both on Dreamweaver and locally through windows explorer but when i visit go to the actual website either on the same network or elsewhere it shows up but is missing the background image.
my skills in html and css are good enough to try and troubleshoot this if it were a problem with the source code but as i have come up empty handed i believe it to be a problem with the server. mind you i could have missed something, if i did please let me know so i can smack my self in the head.
the domain is [URL].. should you want to view it. this is a new server only set up about a week ago and it is my first linux server. i have only ever had to deal with 2 windows servers and only a few linux desktops so i may need a few things explained.

Jul 5, 2010I have a dedicated server with two sites ie site1 & site2. We have two sites which need to share the same images folder, the situation is a shopping site (site1) with one category of products which we have decided to setup as dedicated site for (site2).
Our system uploads the images to site1 directory ie:/home/site1/public_html/images/image1.jpg
I don't want to duplicate the images into site2 images directory so is there a way of sharing them using the following url /home/site2/public_html/images/image1.jpg (which pulls site1 image)

Server :: Mrepo Multiple Redhat Images?
Aug 3, 2010I am running centOS specifically to run mrepo to create patches/updates for systems that are not permitted access to any public network. I understand how to get repositories for both -i386 and x86_64 versions.
My questionis that I have systems running RHEL Versions from 5.1 to 5.4 in the -i386 section. Do I create two -i386 directories and try to build separate repositories for each or just make one -386 directory using the 5.1 iso. Then use the same repository for both?

Jan 13, 2011I have a png file which I put into a user's directory: /~user/file.png This displays OK. When placed in the user's images directory: /~user/images/file.png the file does not display. If I put the file in the global images directory: /images/file.png the file displays OK. Finally if I change the format of the file to a jpg and save it in the user's images directory: /~user/images/file.jpg the file displays OK.
When I look at the Apache access_log and error_log files, there is not even an entry if the png image file is accessed from the user's images directory.
