some weeks ago I've installed ubuntu 10.04 beta desktop, in that version the module sg was present using modprobe (the sg.ko file was not present). I need the sg module because of some scsi driver that require it.
Today I've installed the 10.04 server and modprobe sg returns a not found. I would like to install it or make it visible as in the beta version.
What is the difference between those kernels that you can install from this PPA:

...which currently has 2.6.35.3-maverick (even has later version 2.6.36-rc2-maverick)

Are they the same? Which is newer? Is 2.6.35-19-generic = 2.6.35.3?
I have logged in today and update manager reminds me of an update with linx-backports-module-2.6.31-14-generic. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy gentoo laptop doesn't have a serial port, so I got a usb-serial (RS-232) adapter from ebay. However when I plug it in, the only thing dmesg mentiones is: Code:usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2I've tried to look for a kernel driver in "make menuconfig" by pressing "/" and typing 232. Nothing about RS-232. Device Drivers -> Character drivers -> Serial drivers has 8250 and UART as a module. Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB serial converter support has in-kernel: USB generic serial driver, and FTDI Single port driver as a module, but it still isn't getting recognized.Is there some module i forgot to enable, or do i have to download a separate module from somewhere?

After the install was complete, I noticed the the kernel installed on the server was 2.26.31-14-generic instead of 2.26.31-14-server.I am wondering why would generic kernel be installed from ubuntu-server 9.10 cd? And how do go about chaning to server kernel? Or do I even need to do that? Would generic kernel work as server kernel ?

I have setup made the necessary links as explained in this guide [URL] I haven't managed to try out the any-any patch since no link to the patch is alive anymore.Since slack 13.37 is using 2.6.37.3 kernel I wonder if anyone has found a way to compile the vmware modules on these recent kernels.

Got this error when I tried hash checking, was downloading the file using rtorrent when there was a sudden powercut and my system shutdown abruptly, tried restarting the torrent and kept encountering problems while restarting.
I installed Ubuntu Server recently and really liked the ability to customized everything that was installed on it. Although I'm a little cautious about installing the server edition on my laptop, is there a Debian based distro that comes as empty as Ubuntu Server? If not, what's the difference between the server kernel and the one that ships with Ubuntu Desktop?

When we added another CPU to our 3rd server, the IOWAIT across the oracle rac dropped a lot. We used to get pretty high IOWAIT % before. So I don't really understand how the extra CPU could do this. I thought the IOWAIT % is high because the server is waiting for the SAN, so I thought the SAN was the bottleneck. So I don't really understand the difference between the 3 things (iowait, idle and load avg).
