General :: Debian - Track When Determines Time Without NTP With Some Other Method?

Jun 14, 2011

When a Linux machine with NTP capabilities will start and it does not find the NTP server, how it will determine the time? A clue I have is that it uses some heuristic method but I don't need what does that mean. My main question is: How can I track such an event on a monitoring purpose?

General :: Track Spend Time On Computer?

Sep 4, 2010

Possible Duplicate: time tracking application on linux Every Linux time-tracking application I've seen assumes you're tracking time for projects, perhaps to create invoices later for your clients. This is not what I'm looking for. Rather, I just want some insight into how I spend my time on my computer. I'd like to waste less time on my computer, and spend my time on more productive tasks. The first step to improving anything is to measure it. But I can't be bothered or remember to click on some icon and switch "projects" every time I change from my terminal to browsing ....., or something like that. I want the time I spend on different applications tracked automatically.

CentOS 5 Server :: Method Of Seeing Real-Time Traffic / IP To Apache

Sep 16, 2010

We have a production web site running apache 2.2.3 across several web servers. we also have a major problem with SPAM comments right now. our method of identifying valid IPs (whether by external clients/customers, or internal personnel) vs SPAM'ers is not ideal - its prone to erroneously labeling legit IP's as targets to be blacklisted.

What we need is.. a way to see how much distinct request traffic is coming from any given IP address to the site in real time (or very near realtime). Essentially we want to see in some graphic/chart way requests per sec to apache / per ip sorted by requests per sec.Would nTop do this? I've only used this in a limited form at a branch office, not on a production web server.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Simple Click Mounting Method At Boot-time?

Feb 16, 2011

I'm trying to find a way to auto-mount a couple of NTFS volumes at login (or even earlier if possible), not by editingfstab or running the (currently buggy for Maverick) ntfs-config tool, but by simulating the way that Nautilus mounts volumes when you click or double click on one. The reasons for this are not important(just to make things a little mysterious). So, I checked the output of syslog when I click on an unmounted volume in Nautilus. It seems very useful, but I can't make much out of it. So I need your help I need to make something like a script to do this thing at startup.

Code:
Feb 16 20:52:28 UBUNTU-BCM-P5Q-DELUXE ntfs-3g[3701]: Version 2010.8.8 external FUSE 28

Ubuntu Multimedia :: What Determines How A Media PC Displays A MP4

Apr 15, 2010

When I use a media PC to watch MP4s they generally show up nicely with a scrollable selection of "covers" to select which clip I want to watch (like covers of film DVDs). How is this determined and is there software that allows this to be edited and changed?

I want to edit some video clips and present them in a professional display with the other clips I have. Ideally this would mean I could create a "title page" like a DVD cover

Software :: K3b Can't Determines Size Of Image File : Brasero Won't Mult-session

Jan 18, 2010

When I first installed K3b it burned the first track with no GUI user configurations. The second time it says that the file name is too long and asks if you want to catenate (shorten) it even if it is the same file you have already burned that didn't ask for this shortening of the file name before. Than it gives you an error of "Could not determine size of resulting image file". So my question is how do you use K3b I guess. Brasero won't do multi-session as far I can deduct. It will ask if you want to do it but after ask if you want to erase the disc.If you force it there is no entry of the previous burns. If I could get Brasero to muli-session it would sovle my problem as well. Here's the debugging stuff. I'm using this on Gnome.

Debian :: Dynamic Input Method For German?

Nov 16, 2010

i'm running Debian "lenny" x86 on KDE. Back in Windows, I was able to switch between keyboard input languages by pressing certain hotkeys on my English keyboard. For instance if I switched to German, the semicolon button would become I think a umlaut or o umlaut. Is there any close equivalent in Debian? I know of 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data', however even if it did work (which in my case it didn't), it would be a hassle to type in commands at the terminal to switch between keyboard input languages, compared to just pressing hotkeys.

Debian Configuration :: Is There Preferred / Better Method For Setting Up Alsa?

Apr 30, 2011

Would like to know the best way (or the pros and cons of different ways) to set up Alsa. I did a search for information on how to setup alsa on my system. I found a lot of out-of-date information even on the alsa wiki. What I did finally locate was two different methods for setup, both seemed somewhat up-to-date. One method at the alsa wiki said to put part of the information in the modprobe directory in a conf file and set up certain aliases. Earlier suggestions for putting information in modprobe.conf or conf.modprobe appear to be outdated and a directory with separate files for each device and a conf extension to the files is currently used. The second method from a thread on the Debian forum said to use alsactl init, set sound levels the way you want and then use alsactl save and restore functionality. Older methods using alsaconf instead of alsactl init appear to be outdated as well. Not sure where to put the call to alsactl restore though. Didn't notice that in the documentation. In case it matters, I'm running Debian Stable and have a built-in sound card on the motherboard with AC97 compatibility. It's a Realtek ALC882.

Is there a preferred or better method for setting up alsa? Is there a good pointer to instructions that are not out-of-date somewhere? Would be very interested to hear how others set sound up on their machines. What do others recommend as best steps to do this?

Debian :: Wireless Gets Disconnected Right When It Tells Me To Choose My Method Of Connecting To The Net And Installation

Unfortunately, when I try to install Debian off the DVD, the wireless gets disconnected right when it tells me to choose my method of connecting to the net. It then gives me three choices of connecting - wired, unknown, and wireless. I must be missing something, because when I choose wireless, it says it fails, and cannot find anything to connect to. I input the SSID and password manually and it says its not there. So I quit the install and go back to the desktop and reconnect no problems.
