View 2 RepliesI need a script to fill up my diskspace on my Linux box. It would be best if I can leave 200 MB free. I have Nagios installed, and it should email me when something like this happens, but how do I test it?I have Perl and PHP installed so if you want to use that then sure.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI Acer aspire 3620 and would like to backup whole system. My laptop has a 40Gig hdd. Is there a way I can either create an image or copy(clone) to another computer just in case I need it. If it matters I have a spare 40 gig drive on the other computer. The reason for doing this is so that I can try a system restore and if anything goes wrong I want to be able to transfer back. Also if it is posible how could I put it back and be bootable.

However, the diskspace remained the same even though i have deleted the files (rm -rf *). Sound like the program does not release the diskspace (maybe in cache or virtual memory? ). It only release the diskspace after i exit completely the program.
Is there a way to ask the program to release the diskspace without exit the program?

Every other time my system comes out of hibernation, I see the blue Fedora screen loading like the computer is powering back on, and all of the sudden the screen goes blank, as if it shut itself back off. The funny thing is the power button is still on, but there is no display. Has anyone heard of this issue before. I'm not sure what to try to get it fixed

Unfortunately it would seem that it puts the computer to sleep despite Deluge being active. No biggie I thought, I'll just disable the sleep settings my setting them both back to NEVER. However, it ignores my new settings and still puts the display / computer to sleep, at the exact times I set originally!

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis started happening about 1 hour ago. My computer display just went black, and the power light never changed state. I turned off it's power, and then back on (after a few seconds), and the power light came on "blue", which is what it's supposed to be, but i got nothing on the display, and hitting the menu buttons did not show a menu for the display, or any kind of response. i rebooted a couple of times, to no avail.
I thought my new display just crapped out, so i took it to another computer (windows xp laptop) and plugged in the vga cable (my server uses DVI), and it was fine. I took it to another computer (windows 7) with a DVI cable, and it was fine. I brought it back to my desktop/server, and plugged it back in, and it was fine again. Menu buttons and all.
Then, a few minutes later, it went out again. I turned the power for it off for a few minutes, then back on, and it came on with weird scanlines of various colors... then went back to black.
I played with unplugging the dvi cable in the back of the monitor/display, and wiggling it, and then at the computer connection, and at some point it came back on, for no obvious reason (i think i already stopped playing with it).
xorg.log was uneventful, but i can post it, if need be.
Dmesg shows this (the very last line of the NEXT post was the only one of any interest; but googling it returned no scenarious involving display crashes):
Code:

I think someone has been in my apartment when I'm at work and attempted to login to my computer.
Rather than searching through all the logs, is there any way for Conky to display the last 2 or 3 login attempts?
I have 3 little pieces of hardware called Xcore.
They are very stripped down computers with minimal configuration : 1Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, 1 SD Card (and usual USB/VGA ports).
Everything runs fine out of the box with Debian 7.2

I recently install Ubuntu-studio Desktop and some other packages. And, I upgraded my System. But since then, the Grub has started to display (I have only 9.10 installed, using the entire Disk). Also, unless I select the entry, Grub does not automatically start. The startup takes nearly 1.5 minutes. And, the Login screen, after the installation of Ubuntu Studio GDM, is much slower. I removed the Ubuntu-studio GDM package, still it takes about 20 seconds to allow me to enter Username and password. Any idea?

I have been playing with Linux consistently for a couple of months now. I've been a Windows sys. admin for most of my career, so Linux is pretty strange for me. I started off with computers way back with the TRS-80 and then eventually moved to DOS systems. So the command line interface (CLI) of Linux was not completely alien to me, yet my lack of knowledge on the syntax and commands is holding me back. I have come a long way.
Recently I needed to play around with some DNS settings and one of the commands I used frequently in Windows, IPCONFIG /ALL, doesn't have a direct relative that displayed the same information. If you run ifconfig, it doesn't return the DNS servers you are currently using. You have to run a separate command to retrieve that information.
What I have done is created a super simple script that displays the network information for my primary LAN adapter, which is ETH0 in my case. After that, it shows the domain and name server information. Then it pauses for 20 seconds before closing the terminal window.
Here are the contents of the script file:
ifconfig -a eth0
cat /etc/resolv.conf
sleep 20
I simply right-clicked the Linux desktop, choose Create Document, Empty File. I named it something like Network Info. Then I opened it and put this information in it, saved it, and closed it. I renamed the file and added a .sh extension to the end which makes it into a script file. Next, right-click the script and go to properties. In the Permissions tab, check the box next to Execute: Allow executing file as a program. Then click close.
To run the script, just double-click the icon and then click Run In Terminal at the prompt. The terminal window opens, displays the information, and exits after 20 seconds. If you need it longer than that or need a different interface (such as wlan0 for your wireless), you can change or even add that in.
This was all done in Ubuntu 10.10. I know it is very simple and very straight forward and welcome thoughts and feedback about simpler ways to do this. For me, the old-school Windows admin, it's a baby step in the right direction. I am really enjoying learning the Linux OS.
I have a rather odd problem with a machine. Up until the user logs in everything is fine, but as soon as they log in the display breaks up rendering the computer unusable. Booting from CD is ok, but the monitor is not detected.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a perl script which generates an html file. What I'd really like to do is send people to just one page (the perl page) which then generates the html and shows the html page in question. Thus the whole transition will be invisible to the user, they'll just have an html page.FYI the perl script generates a list of the users who last logged in to the system, it needs to be up to date (by the second).Let me know if this isn't clear, I understand it sounds a bit confusing...

The forum recommends to use this program called Bumblebee but I have had some issues with that in the past. Is there somehow I can setup my dual display while staying on Ubuntu 10.04 and not installing Bumblebee? I have researched into setting up dual display walkthroughs before but they all concentrate on nvidia or ATI configurations.

I have a dell inspiron 9300. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.on't have the root password.Something I'd like to do would be to have two separate ubuntu's on my computer. I'd like to keep this one just as it is but also have another ubuntu-same version- that I can boot up into, and have it default booting up into the old one. How exactly do I do this? I know very little about computers. I barely mastered registration for this site, and copy/paste is a rather new skill for me.
