General :: Wine Crashes When Trying To Run Portable Version Of Firefox
Aug 4, 2010
I think there is something wrong with my Wine setup, but I don't know how to fix it or even what it is. Others have gotten this program to work without problems in Wine. This is the console output that I get from Wine before it crashes. What could be the problem?
I tried removing wine wine directory so that it would auotomatically get recreated when trying to run firefox. Firefox still crashed, but new information was output:

I have a portable version of Firefox on my USB flash drive. It is really SLOW. I have turned off all of the disk-caching options and have even set it to not remember my history. I only have three addons: NoScript, Adblock+, CS Lite. I could even get rid of CS Lite and manage my cookies totally manually if it means I'll have a faster GUI. Almost every time I interact with Firefox in any way I have to wait a few seconds and I get that damned spinning beach-ball (did I mention it's the OSX version?).

I had PS CS5 portable running with Wine and everything was fine. However, from a couple of days ago I click on the icon to open the application and it keep loading. I had attached a screen-shoot with more details. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and Wine (wine-1.3.7).

Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?

I've been using Firefox Portable for ages, mainly between my work (Windows XP) and home (Ubuntu) machine. Recently, just on Ubuntu (10.04), Firefox Portable has started freezing on pages containing Flash. Anyone else experiencing this? I've done a clean re-install of Firefox Portable, then just added Flash, and it still freezes.

I recently upgraded (via Ubuntuzilla) to firefox 3.5.7 and now, every single time I close Firefox, the program seems to crash without quitting completely.
First, I receive an error saying that the program will not close and asks me if I want to Force Quite or Wait for it to close on its own. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Karmic and if I just wait it usually quits fully after a couple seconds.
Now what happens is this: the window still closes, but if I try to reopen Firefox then I get this error stating that Firefox is already open and therefore cannot be opened again. The only way to get back into Firefox is to restart the entire computer. (Incidentally, this is the same problem that occurs whenever I try to Force Quit Firefox)
This now happens every single time I "close" Firefox.
Does anyone know the source of this error? Or a workaround?

How do the version numbers compare? Are they identical? I have Iceweasel 3.5.13, does that mean I essentially have Firefox 3.5.13?

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I'm searching for an automated way of installing the latest version of Flash for Firefox. We are using our machine as a testing server and it would be nice to be assured we always have the latest version of Flash instead of having to manually update it whenever Adobe comes out with an incremental update.

I installed TRS mostly successfully (sometimes the installer crashed, too), but sometimes it works for a while, and sometimes it keeps crashing. It does not crash on any particular lessons.
Also, the mic doesn't work, but that's of less importance right now. I just do *not* want an ISO of Win-doze taking up my hard disk...want to move everything to Linux. FYI, the audio works in Wine, but it's soft. (Playing the same sounds with "aplay" in Slackware and "Winamp" in Wine, which I also tested, the volume is different! I don't care about Winamp...just used it for testing.)
I know version 1.7 of The Rosetta Stone is really old, but I wonder if anyone has successfully used it under Wine?
I'm Running Slackware 13.0 and details of my test are in the App Database:

Here's a question about the wine emulator choices. I'm very happy using openSUSE Linux and I have installed a few applications, but only using the Yast2 methods and RPM groups. The latest available wine version on the Yast2 enabled installation is 1.1.28-2.3 which was built last October. The latest available wine version on the winehq.org web site is 1.1.44. How safe is it to use the non-Yast approach for a new user such as myself to try to install 1.1.44? [Acer Aspire 5520-5891 laptop,AMD Athlon 64x2 (TK57), NVIDIA GeForce 7000M]

The newest version of wine 32-bit (1.1.32?) seems to be a disaster. I had Newsbin Pro working great in Fedora 10. Now this program won't run with wine.i686 on Fedora 12 x64.
I have tried Crossover Linux 8 standard and Newsbin Pro works with that. Crossover is using wine 1.1.18. However that will cost me $40.
How do I install an older version of wine with the dependencies in Fedora 12 x64?
I searched for an rpm and found various flavors of wine rpms. Can I just install that older rpm?

I've been trying for a while to get Ubuntu to support Divx and so far I can't get it to install. I've tried getting it to run with Wine but it doesn't trust any executable file. I then tried using Ubuntu Software Centre to see if there is a Ubuntu version but so far I can't seem to get even that version to work. The main issue though is that it would be nice to be able to run software via Wine and I don't know why I can't figure that out lol.
