Debian Configuration :: Reboot Both The Server And The Client Machines Every Time Change The SAMBA Configuration?

Apr 5, 2010

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.

My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

Debian Configuration :: Change The Driver File And Compile Custom Kernel

May 3, 2011

When I only change a driver file manually, for example /newkernel/linux-source-.6.32/drivers/gpu/drm/i915_drv.h, do I need to run "make config" or similar like "make menuconfig" or can I just skip? I mean these steps:

1.) apt-get install linux-source-2.6.32
2.) mkdir ~/newkernel/
3.) cp /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32.tar.bz2 ~/newkernel/
4.) cd /newkernel/
5.) tar xjf linux-source-2.6.32.tar.bz2
6.) cd linux-source-2.6.32
7.) cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) ./.config yes "" | make oldconfig
8.) change the driver file /newkernel/linux-source-2.6.32/drivers/gpu/drm/i915_drv.h manually
8.) make-kpkg clean
9.) make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --revision=custom.001 kernel_image kernel_headers
10.) dpkg -i *.deb

Is this way OK or do I miss something?

Server :: In Apache Server, Change Log File Location And Log Format For Access Log Fil?

Aug 19, 2009

I installed Apache server with Debian 5.0.2 Lenny. I am trying to write a script which would analysis web log files. I found the log files on /var/log/apache2. There is an access log file, `access.log`. My question is what configuration file determines the location and the name of the access log file. How can I change them? I used CustomLog in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf like below.LogFormat ": %h %l %u %t "%r" %>s %b" common
CustomLog /home/test/my_log_file common Apache2 generated /home/test/my_log_file. But no logs were written in the file even after I run `/etc/init.d/apache2 restart`. Ichanged the log file location. It still didn't work. However, Apache2 still wrote logs in the file `/var/log/apache2/access.log`

General :: Cannot Change File Permissions On A Mounted File System

Apr 6, 2010

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Code:

/dev/sda3 /windows ntfs-3g defaults,nosuid,nodev,umask=000 1 0

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

Debian Configuration :: Setting Up Home File Server?

Jan 3, 2011

I have 2 windows pc's in my home and an office computer that have my files strewn about. I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Change File Permissions On Server

Aug 25, 2010

I'm working on a remote Ubuntu 9.10 server, which is accessed via VPN. I installed Joomla, but had difficulty uploading new components, which I traced to a file permissions problem. I used FileZilla to FTP onto the site and tried to make the chmod changes I needed, but the commands kept failing. Eventually, I contacted the sys admin and told him I thought that there was an ownership problem with the directories. He checked and told me that I was logging in with exactly the same user name and password that he was using (it's not a live system currently) and that he could make chmod changes without any problems. Because all my attempts were still failing, he eventually did the following:

chown -R administrator:administrator /var/www

/var/www is where all the Joomla files are stored and Administrator is the user name. Now I find that when I run a chmod command in FileZilla, the server reports that it worked (see below):

Status:Connected
Status:Retrieving directory listing...
Command:CWD /etc

[code].....

However, if I go back and check the tmp folder permissions, I find that they are still set to 777.This still looks like an ownership problem to me, but I don't understand why the server seems to think that the chmod changes are working, when they aren't.

Loaded: masked (/dev/null)
Active: inactive (dead)

I have tried "sudo systemctl unmask samba.service". I receive no errors however it does not actually unmask. I can't find anything online regarding a service stuck on masked status.

I have a Radeon 4850 Graphic Card with ATI Catalyst as its driver, so I try to reinstall the driver hoping that it will fix the problem, which is a bad logic I admit it, and It fails to uninstall (for some reason the uninstall script is gone) and reinstall (problem with file extraction).
