i downloaded fedora 10 from this site> [URL]... i dont know if the problem is cause it says linux beta... or should i use some other fedora other then 10plus after downloading it, i even managed to install it, but after that i cand seem to run it i pres alt/f2, i write the skype in the box but nothing happens, so i find the file manually with the help of the find engine, i locate the executive file, but it will not open.... i am double/clicking, or pressing the right mouse button and clicking open file, but nothing happens
I have an offer for a free outdated laptop, and wondering if it's possible to run skype on this. It will be running with a very stripped-down Ubuntu Linux operating system, and no other graphical goodies hogging up the processing power.
The specs will be:
400 Mhz Celeron processor
Approx 300 MB RAM
Rest is unknown.
Think this is capable of running skype with video?
I am setting up a laptop for an old person who has trouble locating the skype icon in the notification bar. I want clicking on the skype desktop icon to open the window of already running instance instead of a new one (like it happens in Window$).I am using Lucid puppy 520.
I want the icon to link to script which checks if skype is already running, and if it is, it de-iconifies the skype window
I'm running skype on my Debian squeeze with kde 4.4. If I minimize it, on a task bar it remain for a wile, and then disappear. I know it's still working because some times I see some message (user x it's online, user y it's off line etc etc) and if I type: ps -aux | grep skype, I receive the PID number. But I'm not able to bring it accessible in my desktop.
Does anybody know a good option for a Skype based solution that works on Linux? I have a real problem with the current Linux version as it is a crappy, buggy and downgraded version of the Windows equivalent.
installed skype, shows in apps-internet-skype , but hwen i want to start it, it doesn't do anything. does not show in sysmonitor as running, or at all uninstalled and re-installed, still no luck anyone who got it working.
I have two queries, when am using skype e.g and I close it,it remains running in the background however I cant maximise it again.(have to kill it and then start it again).ALT+ TAB brings the other processes but not skype. It's still running and I can see notifications.2.In firefox, when am scrolling down a page, the text gets mingled into each other,i have tried to edit options in firefox (autoscrolling and smooth scrolling) but no positive change.
Last year I installed UNR on my 7yr old daughter eeepc901. It came with XP Home but was always crashing and running slow. Since all she needed it for was browsing childrens sites and the odd email from myself i decided to put something better on there and in the end choose UNR.
Its been running great for, However I have now taken a new where I am now based in Germany. I have set her up with a skype acct and last night we managed a video call for a couple of minuets although I couldnt hear her very well (couldnt figure out how to get her to turn the volume on up her Mic) When I first set skype up i set it to auto login which when ever I used the laptop to test it worked fine.
However as I am now in Germany and not able to really help with the settings The first thing I thought of doing was to upgrade the version of skype her laptop is running. So I can go to skype and downlaod 2.1 beta 2 for linux would this be the correct version?
Also what I need is a set of instructions that I can give to either my 7yr old daughter or her mother (daughter is probably the better of the two with computers) on how to install the new version. Mum is used to windows where she just double clicks an .exe file and follows the prompts.
Also where would I need them to look in order to get them to turn the mic volume up?
hJust installed brand new Centos 5.6 and skype, according to centos wiki (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Skype) Getting these errors: skype: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by skype)
I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?
I just recently purchased a 3g dongle for my netbook. Everything seems to be working fine until I discovered this strange problem. I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.
I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
I am new to Linux. I have just installed PCLinux and it is working fine.I tried to download and install skype for linux. When i visited the website of skype they asked me the distribution details i.e wether I am using Ubantu 8.10_32bit or Ubantu 8.10+64bit, or debian lenny, or fedora10+.Can somebody please help which one to download for PCLinux.
Given the recent dealings between Skype and Microsoft (here), one can guess that Linux support will be dropped. It wasn't amazing, but it ran. Moreover, security of transmitted data, in my own opinion, will be more questionable as of this acquisition.
What are the alternatives? If there are no full solutions - I propose the unification of several partial solutions into a merged FOSS project. I recommend a secure chat/video client with SIP capabilities and native ports for Linux Console, X, and FreeDos.
I need to find out my version and other system info...I also need to find my skype icon...it was installed but I cannot find it...also...how do I install flashplayer?
I use Ubuntu 10.04 lts and would like to create a launcher on the desktop that works like the Skype button [url] so that when I click on it it calls/chat with contact.
Suggest the command line input i would need to use for this in the launcher ? I know that its skype-wrapper to run Skype itself .... would i need to add to this command ?
I've done something stupid to my Linux Skype configuration. Only my online contacts are shownit's as if my offline contacts don't exist. This is a problem when I'm trying to figure out if someone is a contact already or not. The screen shot below shows the story. How can I make my offline contacts appear on this screen?
N.B. Answers for the Windows interface are not helpful the Linux interface is completely different.
When I have Skype running (not in "Offline" mode) I often see it start eating about 0.5 kb/s of my traffic (so the network quota meter is dropping inevitably and internet stops soon). When I restart Skype or make it go offline-online, it starts forwarding it's things again soon.
How to have Skype available for chat, but not sapping my traffic (at least when "ppp4" is up)? I feel the majority of traffic spent by Skype is unrelated to my own activities (I mostly use text chat).
this app dock station (kinda like osx) where you can put your application in this Dock on the desktop like skype. I have ubuntu and I was wondering where can I get this at.
Is there an open-sourced based group video conferencing like skype group video conferencing? Basically the same post that I had posted before but with video?[URL]..
