Ubuntu Multimedia :: Upside Down Video And Skype With Cairo Dock On Asus K52J?

Feb 13, 2011

I just bought an Asus K52J a couple of days. I of course got down right away to installing Ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except for a couple of problems with Skype.

In the past I already had the problem with Skype video not working while Cairo dock was running. I found a solution which consisted in changing the command line and making a custom launcher for Skype alone on my desktop. The command line was

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && skype Now, on this new laptop I have a new problem.....the webcam image is upside down! For this too I found a custom command line for skype to run properly.

export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=3 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype My problem is combining the two commands in one line so that Skype will run properly and this would thus solve my problem. Seeing that I am running Cairo dock as well i need to solve the incompatibility issue and also the inverted video in Skype.

I tried just copying and pasting them but it only solves the incompatibility with Cairo dock, the image in the meantime, remains upside down!

Ubuntu :: Restore The Desktop Dock Bar ?

Jul 13, 2011

I tried to apply some Compiz effects in my Ubuntu but I suppose something went wrong and I unabled something as now, when I turn it on, nothing appears: after login, I can just see the background and my desktop shortcuts: no side dock bar or top bar. I've installed Ubuntu last week and I don't know it very well. When start in in Safe Mode, the top bar appears and, although there's not the side dock bar, another bar appears in the bottom (I think that's normal in the Safe Mode). I have a Terminal shortcut, so I can access it, and when I create shortcutut in the Safe Mode it also appears in the Normal one, so access to software won't be a problem while solving this issue.

I have created which uses Gnome Seed which is in the Ubuntu repositories (although the newest version needs to checked out from Git to allow it to work) and SeedKit which unfortunately isn't in synaptic but needs to be downloaded. The links to get the source for both projects are as follows:

The proof of concept is a JavaScript/HTML based frontend of Gnome's Log Viewer. It doesn't replicate 100% of Log Viewers functionality but it produces the basics of it which is to display the contents of Linux log files. The tutorial and link to download the source files are as follows:

General :: Application Called Impact - Paths In Java Application ?

Apr 14, 2010

So, I have this application called Impact, it is an explicit time integration Finite Elements code written in Java...

[url]

I untar the pack, and launch the application calling a script, from within the untarred folder,

Code:

This launches a gui which allows me to setup a case, which needs some setup file, tipically some *.in and a mesh file, tipically some *.msh.

Other mode of executuion consists of calling the setup file as argument to Impact.sh script ( CLI execution mode, for g33k5 )

My problem is : I have packed the whole stuff into a Slackware .tgz, that places it in /usr/local/Impact, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin,

Code:

Code:

I decided to hack the ImpactGUI_OGL_linux_amd64.sh script from

Code:

Code:

no avail,

Code:

even after adding /usr/local/Impact/bin to PATH... won't go...

I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...

This should be simple, but I just don't see it. KDE 4 desktopI have an application located in /usr/Kompozer that I'd like to add a shortcut to on my desktop. It's not on the menu. Runs fine from the command line. Right clicking on desktop doesn't seem to have what I need. I tried using Dolphin file manager, but still no joy. This has probably been asked about before.... I would like to start apps in desktop 2, 3 and 4. To start apps during boot, I use two different methods: The .xinitrc file in /home/dan works fine under: "Add your own lines here..." Startup Applications in Gnome | System works well as well. Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

General :: Configuring Automatic Profiles On Dock/hotplug?

May 8, 2011

My Ubuntu laptop gets docked into a few different locations per day with different hardware and use cases. I'd like to automate the preference settings for each of these locations:

Work computer, dual head 1280x1024
External USB audio and bluetooth audio
Home computer, dual head 1280x1024, 1080p
External USB audio

Basically, when I dock the box in either (1) or (2), I want to automagically get the right xrandr settings for the different screen geometries and the right audio routing.

What scripts, etc. are responsible for the inscrutable default behavior?

Are there packages for customizing this?

If I wanted to roll my own, what is the right library to use to catch the hotplug events?

Software :: Invoking Wine Application From A Desktop Icon

Nov 24, 2008

I have a windows app I run under wine that always displays a blank dos window first when I run it directly from a link to application on my desktop.I wrote a bash script to run it and put that in a link to application and that works without the blank dos window. Why doesn't the first way work?

Long version:I have a small old windows application that stores all my passwords. I like it because it's simple and I can access it (dual boot) from Windows or Linux. It just displays a very simple window with a list of accounts and clicking on one of those opens a child window with the details. It has no graphics or anything fancy. On the windows side, installing it
was as simple as unzipping it and creating a desktop shortcut for it - no setup at all.

On the Linux side (kubuntu hardy), I created a link to application on my desktop with Command set to
wineconsole /media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper/pass32.exe and work path set to/media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper

It works fine, but when I start it up, I always get a blank dos window on the screen first and then the application window appears. I have to manually minimize the dos window to get it out of the way. It does nothing useful by itself. But, if I close it, it closes the application with it.I tried to run it as as wine instead of wineconsole, but that does nothing at all - at least on the screen and dmesg.
