OpenSUSE :: Knetwork Manager - Does Runlevel 3 Allow Wireless Connections To Work

Jun 20, 2011

I understand that the K (KDE) network manager is a KDE app but does it actually function in runlevel 3? By that I mean does it allow wireless connections to work? I've been trying to do this but can't. I have a need to while in KDE to sometime init 3 and while in runlevel 3 I need my wireless to work. I havent figured out if Knetwork manager still functions outside of KDE or if I need to just use ifup traditional.

I did search the forum for threads related to knetwork manager and did not see anything related to this so I hope someone can assist me. Also if I do need to use ifup traditional method, is there anything specail I need to do so that it works without issues such as, uninstall knetwork manager or something else? I ask this because my previous attempts at using ifup (by switching to it from YAST) end up making my wireless not work. I can scan and find my network but after entering my creds it doesnt do anything. I managed to get it to work once somehow but after a shutdown and reboot it no longer worked. Just incase you need to know, I'm running Suse11.4 KDE 4.6, my wireless module I believe is a iwlagn or something like that. My laptop which Suse is running on is a Toshiba A665-S6086 core i3, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD.

Security :: Policy That Limits Connections On Port - Encapsulates Total Sum Of All Connections From Hosts?

Jan 21, 2011

Is it fair to say that connLimit and hashlimit are very similiar on Linux i.e. while hashlimit caters to limits for groups of ports, they both set the connection rate limit per host? How in IPTables, do I configure a policy that limits connections on a port that encapsulates the total sum of all connections from all hosts? i.e. I do not want to allow more than 6000conn/minute for port range that is the sum of all connecting hosts?

General :: Can't Get Any Of The Drives To Work In Unbuntu?

Apr 26, 2011

I've had this unbuntu for over a year, and have never been able to get ANY of the drives to work. ie; the DVD-r, CD-r, or USB. I've installed all the 'restricted' extras it said it needed. if I open places, then computer, their icons show. but, as soon as I put in a disk or USB device--- their icon disappears, then nothing?? everything did work fine when I had WinXP installed. I've just been using unbuntu for the internet and I'm happy its working great. but, I really wish I could use all the other neat stuff. I really miss using my drives, and having fun with all the other stuff unbuntu offers.

Ubuntu Installation :: Hard Drives And Partitions Work In General?

Apr 14, 2010

I've been through a lot of the posts already, but nothing seems to solve my problem. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 dual installed (Windows was installed first). Everything has been working fine until a few weeks ago when I accidentally left a USB drive plugged in when I restarted my computer from Windows.

Ever since then, whenever I have restarted my computer from Windows grub2 has failed (it does not fail when I restart from Ubuntu). I get a varying message like Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key..where the part between the single quotes is usually different each time. When this happens I have to reinstall Grub2 from a live disk, which is becoming a bit of a pain.

I've been reading around, but I don't really have a great understanding yet of how hard drives and partitions work in general, and so I haven't been able to work out what the source of this problem is.

Debian Multimedia :: VCDs Do Not Play - Drives Otherwise Work Very Well - Also Write DVDs And CDs Often

May 8, 2010

I have one desktop and two laptops. It is strange to find that none of the three systems play VCD, when I use Totem, Totem-xine, Gxine or VLC media player, even with the codecs updated. Worse, each of the three DVD players then act in a loop, seeking the LG DVD-RAM drive endlessly. But the drives otherwise work very well and I also write DVDs and CDs often.I have tested the VCDs in Windows machines with VLC media player, and the VCDs work wonderfully. This is kind of strange. So I thought may be I should report this.

Networking :: TCP / IP Connections In Fedora 14?

Jan 27, 2011

I just installed Fedora 14 in a hard disk of my PC. I installed MySQL also. I dontt know if this is the correct site for my question, but nobody MySQL related, have an answer yet. For MySQL accepting remote connections, my.cnf file must be edited (bind-address line or skip-networking line in that file). Well, that file in my Fedora-MySQL installation does not have such lines, so i assume, TCP/IP connections are allowed in MySQL. When i try to connect to the MySQL server it refuses the connection with the error 2003, that in short, means no TCP/IP connections are allowed. I disabled the firewall and retried but with no success, enabled the firewall again, and nothing happen. Is Fedora not accepting TCP/IP connections?

Fedora :: Vnc Connections Broken Or Lost

Mar 9, 2011

1. hardware: HP/Compaq desktop, about 4 years old, 1GB mem
2. FC14 (copied live CD to HD) and updated
3. sshd, telnet, vnc and samba activated (mostly default config)
4. disabled firewall and selinux
5. I have tested all those succesfully from WinXP workstation. For terminal session, I used putty.exe and/or telnet.exe

When I worked with the machine (say TestMachine), I noticed some times that the vnc connection was lost, but restarted succesfully. Similar thing happened with ssh. Also the samba connection was lost, but it recovered after hour or two. Then I tested leaving a constant ping on, and it revealed that some breaks happen. But it is not an infrastructure problem, as pingtest on other machine in the same network is OK.

Again, I tried to connect. No ssh, telent, vnc or samba worked. But surprisingly, I was able to telnet to another system first and then telnet to the TestMachine from there. I was able to use it for a while. But then, session was broken and now I can't access it anymore via network. I tried to browse /var/logs but I didn't find anything revealing yet.

Fedora :: FC15: Tsclient For RDP Connections

Jun 27, 2011

I have just upgraded my FC14 laptop to FC15 and although tsclient was 'transferred', it would not run and so I did not have a working graphical interface to make RDP connections.

As the app wasn't running, I removed it and then discovered that tsclient is listed as 'orphaned' and 'deprecated' in the repos, with the latest working version being for FC13.

Is there really no GUI interface for using RDP in Fedora 15 - I can't believe I have to drop down to a command prompt to run rdesktop!?

Fedora Networking :: Two Internet Connections On F10 Server?

Feb 25, 2009

I have a question, regarding the use of two internet connection on the same server. So, the thing is like this: The server will have 3 network adapters: connected to a DSL modem (on this adapter I have one of the internet connections, a PPPoE connection. It's only purpose is to share the internet connection to all LAN users using SNAT.

eth1 ----> the other internet connection, a much more expensive one actually, used for hosting a website, a domain name server, and a qmail server. eth2 ----> LAN connection So what I want is to make eth1 the "default gateway" (for outgoing mail, DNS requests, etc) and, as I said, use the ppp0 connection on eth0 only for internet sharing in LAN.

My question is (since I'l configure this server in about one week), does anybody have any suggestions regarding how could I accomplish this? I mean, I'm affraid that ppp0 will also try to use the default gateway from the other internet connection and vice-versa. Now, I know I can use the ip route/ip rule commands, but for many reasons I'd like to keep it simple and not use them.

Fedora Networking :: F11 - Routing Two PPPOE Connections

May 24, 2009

On a Fedora 11 machine, I configured ppp0 on eth0 and ppp1 on eth1, each one is connected to a modem, I also defined ppp0 as the default gateway.. Should I do anything else to load balance the 2 connections or will ppp1 take some of the load by default? Should I add any other routing rules? If yes then please tell me what should I add, keeping in mind that for each pppoe connection both the pppoe address and the remote address are not static so I actually needed some scripting to change the default gateway each time the remote pppoe address changes.

Fedora Networking :: Simultaneous (Two Or More) PPTP VPN Connections?

Jul 13, 2009

Just moved over from the dark side (Vista) and was wondering how I can get two (or more) PPTP VPNs connected at any given time. I usually attempt to multi task (although swambo says I can't) and work on various clients' servers at the same time. The GUI network manager thingy only allows me to dial up one VPN at a time. Is there perhaps a cli version and if so where would I go to get a tutorial on this please. BTW, running F11 32bit. Tried Debian and Ubuntu as well and found F11 to blindingly fast on my DualCore Toshiba laptop. Pity I can't see the additional 1Gb of RAM though. (4Gb in total).

Fedora Servers :: SSH Will Not Accept Connections After Trying To Get VNC Working With Gdm On 11

I tried to set up vnc following the steps of this webpage:

which did not work. I changed everything back the way it was, but when I tried to ssh in to my remote server, the connection timed out? It showed nothing in secure logs. I tried to ssh in through webmin, in asked for auth but did not connect. The logs said this:

Jul 30 12:05:10 server sshd[2829]: Did not receive identification string from 209.139.209.100

I tried to telnet port 22 through the shell in webmin and got this:

> telnet 209.139.209.100 22
Trying 209.139.209.100...
Connected to 209.139.209.100.

Connection closed by foreign host.

I tried reinstalling ssh, but got the same errors...It worked fine before the howto. I can't imagine how it changed something in ssh...
