Fedora :: Recover Data From Failing Hard Drive

Using F12 with a LVM Volume, Single disk with OS on and boot partition. The OS HDD is getting i/o errors, but will still boot to the login screen. I've removed the HDD and connected it to a Fedora Live OS on my laptop, connected the HDD and it registers as :

And it tried to mount /dev/sdd2 to view and see if I can recover some files.

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdd2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Any way to mount the partition to allow me to try and get some data back, or if trying to do a full backup of the drive you can get it to ignore i/o errors.

I just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.

I've been trying to discover how can I recover data from a hard drive that as been previously configured with LVM, although not encrypted,but I have been having mixed results. I've been using LVM more and more lately to configure hard drives and my greatest fear is to have a motherboard fail on me and get locked out of the contents.

My sister-in-law (SIL) has a Western Digital ShareSpace 4TB network access storage that was setup in a RAID 5 configuration (four 1TB hard drives). To make a long story short, a blinking red light on the device and a call to Tier 2 technical support, one of the guys mentioned using Fedora as a way to retrieve the data from the hard drives (seems like the hard drives are good but maybe the actual NAS device crapped out).
I will not have access to the hard drives till this weekend and of course Tier 2 technical support is closed on the weekends. I have almost no Linux knowledge but can follow instructions pretty darn well. I am looking to install Fedora 14 Desktop Edition 64 bit on my desktop sometime tonight or tomorrow. Once I have Fedora installed, how would I mount the hard drives and have Fedora read the RAID 5 array?

I have a laptop with Fedora 12 on it and I accidentally did an dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (since then I learned to think before I type)
anyway, I stopped it in time (I hope), it only zeroed first 60 MB. So, it killed partition table and boot partition. What I need is home partition, and it should be untouched. home is on a LVM device (fedora default install settings), and I tried testdisk (supposedly handles LVM) but it found only one partition (I guess it's a LVM physical device, as there should be 3 partitions, /, /home and swap) and said it's not recoverable.
Is there a way to get access to files on that partition (partition itself, including file table should be untouched). Partition contains various data (video, audio, and text) I need back (and it's my data, not backed up, and not something I can redownload). Is there any software that can help me with this, and if not, is it theoretically doable (I believe it should be, as the partition itself is not damaged, so it should be possible to read file names and link them with data on disk, am I right)? what is a good way to image the disk, so I can reinstall the laptop while trying to rescue data from image?

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

An external 3½" HDD seems to be in danger of failing” it's making ticking sounds when idle. I've acquired a replacement drive, and want to know the best strategy to get the data off of the dubious drive with the best chance of saving as much as possible. There are some directories that are more important than others. However, I'm guessing that picking and choosing directories is going to reduce my chances of saving the whole thing. I would also have to mount it, dump a file listing, and then unmount it in order to be able to effectively prioritize directories. Adding in the fact that it's time-consuming to do this, I'm leaning away from this approach.
I've considered just using dd, but I'm not sure how it would handle read errors or other problems that might prevent only certain parts of the data from being rescued, or which could be overcome with some retries, but not so many that they endanger other parts of the drive from being saved. I guess ideally it would do a single pass to get as much as possible and then go back to retry anything that was missed due to errors.
Is it possible that copying more slowly — e.g. pausing every x MB/GB — would be better than just running the operation full tilt, for example to avoid any overheating issues? For the "where is your backup" crowd: this actually is my backup drive, but it also contains some non-critical and bulky stuff, like music, that aren't backups, i.e. aren't backed up. The drive has not exhibited any clear signs of failure other than this somewhat ominous sound. I did have to fsck a few errors recently — orphaned inodes, incorrect free blocks/inodes counts, inode bitmap differences, zero dtime on deleted inodes; about 20 errors in all.The filesystem of the partition is ext3.

I've got an old EIDE hard drive that used to be used for a dual-boot WinXP and Linux (not sure what version - either RH9 or FC1), and I'd like to pull some data off it. That computer died, and I reformatted the Windows partition, but left the Linux portion alone. My current Linux (FC10 + XP) computer uses a SATA hard drive, and I'd like to get the data from the old drive to the new one. I've connected the hard drive normally, jumpered as a slave drive. Linux now boots normally, but I can't access the older hard drive. I tried the techniques in the following thread: [url] and commented there (with more info), but I thought I would be more likely to get a response by starting a new thread.
Here's a summary of what happened: ran "fdisk -l": the command saw both hard drives ran "tail -f /var/log/messages" and got the following: Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3 FS on sdb8, internal journal Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost hald: mounted /dev/sdb8 on behalf of uid 500 sdb8 was a FAT partition I had set up for moving files back and forth between XP and Linux (none of the other partitions were reported). ran "vgscan", which only returned one volume group When I ran FC10's Local Volume Management tool, it sees the hard drive and its partitions, but reports them as "Uninitialized Entities".

In my laptop I have a 200GB hard drive that is starting to make clicking and grinding noises and won't boot about every third try.

/dev/sdb is a usb flash drive that has pmagic (not sure of the version, but it's 2.6.32.9-pmagic kernel, so I think it's the latest version). I'm posting from pmagic right now because I don't want the failing disk to get any worse until I get this sorted. I also know there is a post here called something like 'learning the dd command' or 'mastering the dd command' or something to that effect, but I can't find it for the life of me (I have it bookmarked on the failing drive, of course). If someone could point me to that post,

I have a 1Tb Western Digital Network drive. I was showing someone the photos on this on their XP computer and noticed that each file also had a capitalized version beside. I assumed this was a copying mistake and highlighted all the capitalized copies and deleted them. To my horror all files have vansihed. The next horror came in that XP apparently doesn't move deleted files to the recycle bin it just deletes them. I rapidly went back to my ubuntu machine and mounted the network drive. However none of my normal recovery file methods work on network drives. PhotoRec doesn't list the drive. and sudo ddrescue -r 3 ~/.gvfs/SFTP for [myname] on [address]/[path] ~/LOGFILE tells me permission is denied.

I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).

I have a 3 weeks old PC which I've just finished getting set up with Ubuntu 11.04 and W7 in a Virtual Box. Now the drive has started making rumbling noises and doesn't always boot.The engineer from Dell is coming tomorrow to replace the drive, but what can I do about transferring the whole old drive to the new one in full working order, quickly?
I've been using rsync to keep backups of my home folder, so I've got the data side covered. But I don't really want to spend the next couple of weeks re-installing all the software, printers etc all over again. So is there a quick, easy way of replicating the old drive with partitions, VB, etc (I'm not that good at using the terminal) ?

I'm using xubuntu on a box that has 2 drives. One is quite small mounted as / and the other larger drive is mounted as /home Both drives are IDE The /home drive has had some failure in the past & occasionally creates errors. Is there any way of identify which sectors are bad (or good) and isolating them to try & get some more use out of the drive?
It won't be used for storing valuable data.It is an old box for visitors to use. But it would be handy to use it to store some large read-only audio files. I've installed smartctl & could post output from there if you think it is useful. I can't work out how to interpret the information.

I made an attempt to backup my system (karmic koala) using this routine. cd / then sudo tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
The process of backup went on for a very long time, which is probably normal. On returning to the computer in the morning, it was in suspend mode and would not power on via the usual method,tapping power button. So then I used the reset button, and after booting up a message appears on the top right that reports "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Is there something wrong with the statement that was used for backing up the system? Also when I attempt to login it does not work now either, it eventually returns to the login user selection. So is there a possibility the backup finished and then there may be a chance the system can be restored from the backup file? I have tried booting up with a live cd and could use some advice on how to navigate with terminal to root of the system and see if the backup file exist even, have been unable to get to the root folder(where the backup would be) with the GUI method via live cd.

I seem to have a complex issue on my hands that i can't figure out. first, i wasn't able to get access to my LVM'd hard drives via SSH without half of the content being missing or locked out (read-only or unable to open at all). the problem then went up to being unable to boot up - all i got was a long slew of [100.1234] ata1.00: error messages (they eventually DO stop once they get to around 998.234234 or whatever, and then i can log in and it seems to be "stable").
Part way through this rebooting ordeal i realized / decided to make power-on-self-test stop and wait if it finds errors (via bios) - that showed me that my 750G SATA drive is "bad" and my two (older) 120G & 250G IDE drives are "ok". i then unplugged the SATA drive, rebooted, and didn't see those error messages. however, my LVM was still obviously not coming together (since LVM was made up of the 120G, 250G, and 750G drives)
So, now it seems:
a) I can't boot smoothly with all drives in place
b) I can't do anything with lvm if i remove the 750G sata
c) With all drives hooked up, i can wait 10mins for the errors to go away, but STILL can't do anything with lvm
d) I need to recover the lvm stuff so that i can nicely migrate ALL those files (1.1TB of it) onto a new 1.5TB drive and do away with lvm
This is all running ubuntu 7.10 server edition (32-bit version on a 64-bit computer). i DID post a question on the ubuntu forum as well but so far got no replies at all.

Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

I am using software RAID in Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10 to mirror(RAID1) two 1TB harddrives. These are used for data storage and websites.I also have a 80GB harddrive for the operatigsystem. This drive has no backup or RAID at all. Should this drive crash and the system therefore to become no longer bootable, will I be able to recover the data the 1TB drives or should I backup the 80GB drive as well?

I will begin by announcing that I really know very little about Linux, not having dealt with it previously. That being said, a hard drive that has important files on it was given to me to back up without having been told it was Linux. I piggy backed it into a Windows PC and initialized the hard drive. When it showed there were no files to access I then realized this must be a Linux based hard drive. I attempted to access files with both Linux Reader and Linux Recovery but they both act as though the hard drive has no files on it. And no I did not format the drive, I only intialized it.Is there any way to retrieve files from this hard drive being initialized in Windows? I do have a Linux machine that I could piggy back it into but I have never messed with this machine before, or Linux for that matter, so wouldn't know where to begin.

I haven't run into this with ubuntu before. I am trying to recover some files from a damaged hard drive and when I try to use the no change to computer option I get to a log in screen. But, I don't have a user name or a password at that point.

Because a customer of mine is inefficient in doing backups I have to do a recovery if possible. Drive had vista on it and was really bug infested to point of a reload. I reloaded vista from scratch and then my customer says "Oh, I guess I forgot to back those files up...".Is it possible to recover some files even though vista was reloaded? I suppose the basic answer is "As long as they havent been overwritten yet".
Im running testdisk and its made a ton of directories with files in them that I assume it has recovered. Im going to have to write a script I guess to grab the files as there are about 600 directories!I guess what Im asking is 1. What are my chances of success? 2. Has anyone ever recovered files from a vista re-install? 3. Is testdisk the best way of going about it (with photorec).

Last week, i updated, my fedora. After that, during every boot up, I am getting a warning message like " Your hard disk may failing". It indicates that it is due to bad sectors. But I don't think so. There was a bug reported for a similar problem in fedora 11. I think it is not fixed yet. Hard disk is not having any problem during data access. Other OS including windows are not giving any warning message.

I ran smartctl and it says "unrecognized" hard drive. I recognized the hard drive the first time I ran the test. But now, it's unrecognized? How come? I don't know how or why this happens. How can I get rid of this problem and the annoying icon?
I tried to run Windows, then started getting errors? This is strange: I've been running Linux the whole day. I last used the Windows hard drive was 2 days ago. Now its screwing up. Window is screwing up the hard drive? HDD has too many bad sectors. didn't touch it, I didn't do much on it, etc? I do not understand?!

I have recently gotten hold of a device that helps me plug my old ATA/IDE hard drive to my computer and view my old files that I wish to recover. I am using Ubuntu and the harddrive that I wish to retrieve the data from also has an Ubuntu install on it. The files I wish to recover are old .doc files, which I want to keep to remember my old writings.
The problem I have encountered arises when I wish to open some of the files. The icon for some of the files, which happen to be my best writings, has an X on the top right, indicating that I cannot view the contents. When I click on the files, the following error message pops up: "Access to /media/c885571b-a6e5-4a2d-937a-78af7050910/george/Courses/hist388/Passion.doc was denied."
Now, I am guessing that I need to be able to log in as superuser or something to be able to access these files, so I logged in my terminal as super user by following the instructions outlined on this page: [url]
I still did not have the sufficient access required to be able to open the files that I would like to retrieve.

I have the strangest issue where my HDD reports full, but I can only account for about a tenth of the data.
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.4
laptop Toshiba Tecra A11
HDD 250GB
4Gb RAM
/home 20.3GB
/usr 2.4GB
/var 742MB
/lib 132.9MB
/opt 71.3 MB
/boot 15.4MB
/etc 14.2MB
sbin 7.4MB
bin 6.4MB
The rest are below a MB. This system is not a dual boot so 241Gb is ext4 and 8.9Gb is Extended and 8.9GB is Swap. This system has been loaded for about a month, when I initially loaded it there was 230GB free.

So, I recently acquired a second hard drive (1.5 TB) and I wish to partition Ubuntu 11.04 with Windows 7. I've set everything up properly and using the Disk Utility in my System Settings I've created a 1 TB partition which I want to use for Linux. I think it has the proper partition type but how do I exactly go about transferring all my files from the hard drive I'm using now to the partition I would like to have?

I have a Seagate 1TB external USB 2.0 hard disk which contains 740 GB of data. Everytime I connect, it shows the memory occupied and the remaining memory(190GB)..but when i try to access the folders inside they read empty... nothing is seen in the folders.. I am unable to read any data from it or write to it... Same is the case with Windows When I run self-test in Linux ubuntu I get
