Ubuntu :: Boot Error : Cannot Find Wubildr?
Feb 6, 2010
I've been using an install of Ubuntu on Windows XP on my netbook. Iworked fine until recently, when I tried to boot into Ubuntu I got an error message reading:
Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No WUBILDR
Try (hd0,1): NTFS5: No wubildr
Try (hd0,2): invalid or null
Try (hd0,3): invalid or null
Error: Cannot find GRLDR in all devices. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
I've checked for the wubildr file and it's in its usual place on the C: drive, yet I still get this error message.

My laptop was a Windows XP machine. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi about one month ago, and everything has been working well until this morning.
Yesterday, I had some updates (found by the Update Manager) in Ubuntu, and then switched to my Windows XP to work for a while.
Sadly, when I was trying to boot into my Unbuntu this morning, I failed with a single line of message at prompt: "No wubildr", and my computer just restarted itself. So I booted into my Windows XP, and everything here is working perfect just as before (I'm using it right now). I don't think I deleted anything when working in my Windows XP last time. Also, I do see two files - "wubildr" and "wubildr.mbr" in my C drive in Windows XP (just as before).
So, I don't know what makes me unable to load into my Ubuntu. Is it becasue that the Ubuntu undates yesterday make it incapable of finding the wubildr?

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error, then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself. Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

I switched to the linux-image-rt kernel a while back, and decided yesterday to switch back to linux-image-generic. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember how to do this properly, so I just uninstalled all of the linux-rt related packages and then changed the /vmlinuz and /initrd.img symbolic links back to what they used to be and rebooted. So now the machine gets stuck in a memtest whenever I boot from the HD. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fix things from a rescue CD. If I try chroot /mnt/hd (where my old system was), and then update-grub, for example, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). So, basically I'm completely lost, but also sure that a working system isn't more than a few simple commands away. Can anyone throw me a bone?

- I upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10. 10.10 had been a fresh install on a emachines 725 that was running Windows 7 - a dual boot. This was done in December 2010 and everything was working fine - until the upgrade.
- I booted after the upgrade and (very rapidly) there is an error "no wubilder" (or something like this) and then I get dumped to a selection of linux headers. If I select 2.6.35-28-generic then I can boot up and everything seems fine...
I cannot figure out how to get around this extremely clumsy boot procedure. I have checked numerous postings and I cannot determine the answer/guidance that I understand...I checked the C: drive on Windows and there is an updated wubildr but the wubildr.mbr is the old one from 10.10 (by the date on the file). Don't know if this matters or not.

I was trying to install Ubuntu for long time and abandoned the idea a few times because of the same technical problem which seems to pop over and over again. ive been trying to install it after using an XP system or a Win 7 OP, and every time i faced the same Error again again- "wubildr.mbr file is missing". i installed it from a CD and tried the Wubi program too but both gave me the same error at the end. i have a decent PC with 2 hard drives, 1 of 500gbs and the other with 160gbs(which is used for the OP's). the goal was to install Ubuntu alone with no other operation systems in other partitions. Now i thought to use the Full Format of the Win XP which takes about half an hour or probably more and then installed the Ubuntu system, i got some different error which goes like this- "Windows rootsystem32hal.dll missing"

Worst combination ever.. To fix "no wubildr" I have to use synaptic package manager. To use synaptic package manager I have to access recovery mode, which the "no wubildr" problem is not allowing me to. Is there anything else, than reinstalling ubuntu, I can do?
EDIT: the terminal is not working either.. Segmentation fault:/etc/sudoers is mode 0666, should be 0440. That is why I am unable to use the synaptic package manager.

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I've got a setup where I need to use 'find' to find 0 or more files in a certain directory, however, 'find' always produces an error when there are no files that match a certain check. Is it possible to run 'find' while having it omit errors when no files match the pattern?

I'm having a bit of a problem with the new Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my Windows 7 based machine via Wubi. I see the error message "Try hd(0,0): NTFS5: No wubildr" on my screen for around two minutes, then "Try hd(0,1)" shows on the next line briefly, then Grub loads and I can boot normally. All the time the error message is on the screen there is lots of hard drive activity. Is there anything I can do to fix this delay in my booting up sequence?

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. Now I tried to boot it, I ended up failing with this message: Code: Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1 ... Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, Attempting to create it. ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda1' Here is the important part of my menu.lst:

I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). In this case I had this error message:

We make everyday a DB Mysql backup on Linux redhat Enterprise. We are using a bash shell script (and putting it in the crontab) to execute it automatically everyday. We added a line to this script telling, once the backup has completed, to find old backup files (stored on hard disk after each backup) older than x days to remove them. We use the find command (search for file type) with the mtime option and in combination with rm command. Everything runs ok but we also want to add some new code to the same line: If find command cannot find anything or fails, for example if it cannot delete file or fails, send the error message (standard error output) to an error file (like error000001 and increasing) and mail the errorxxxx file to an email address for example to admin@companyname.com. What would be the code for this issue to add it to our find command in the same bash shell script??

Make: Fujitsu-Siemens
Model: LifeBook P7120
For some reason (hardware - I am guessing) the LiveCD does not boot on some laptops. The LiveCD worked well on my Dell Inspiron 1525 without any problems but my Fujitsu-Siemens refused to boot up. If you are trying to install or use F12 with the LiveCD ISO image burnt onto a CD on a laptop and fails with the following error:[drm:drm_mode_rmfb] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own Boot has failed, sleeping foreverthis workaround may work for you. Sometimes it will come up with another error about 'Root Device Not Found'
The workaround only works on a bootable USB key for some other reason, created with 'live-usb creator' and not a CD nor a LiveCD image on a USB created on a windows machine. I have tried them all.

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

I changed my motherboard battery last night, and now get "Read Error" on booting to Ubuntu, on dual boot system. This is the most frustrating thing in an otherwise great operating system. It is the second time I have encountered this issue (last time was a change of power supply). I fixed it last time after three days of re-loading Grub2 and playing around Grub 2 updates, etc. Fixed it eventually, but as usual, no idea of what eventuality fixed it. I think I found a web page buried deep in the 'net, which talked about device.map. Do you think I can find it again - not yet - day 2 searching for the answer... This is what the grub script tells us:

I've tried adjusting the boot order, putting the HDD first and removing everything else but no joy. Im a linux n00b so no idea what to do next apart from go back to windows.

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".
