I've recently purchased a VPS with CentOS 5 installed with full root access.
I've just ran a yum update and It just hangs, I've masked my IP address for obvious reasons. code...
When I try to update from a Debian notification of new updates the update window freezes without showing the updates. When I try to update in a terminal, I get the following message: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?". If another process is using it, I know nothing about it. How do I solve this problem?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Dell 2.53G machine from 10.3 to 11.2 (KDE desktop). Everything seemed fine for the first day. Then the whole desktop froze. No screen update, no keyboard, and, though you could see the mouse move, clicking didn't do anything. The only way out was to pull the plug.
After multiple attempts at fixing it failed, I repartitioned the disk and tried a "clean install". Everything worked for about 2 hours. The system is currently frozen. The harddrive is quiet. The only "3rd party app" was Adobe Flash, pulled from the Non-OSS repository.
i have running more than 50 servers with openSUSE 11.2 for a long time without any problems. After upgrading 30 server to 11.3 some of them are freeezing after one or two days. I can ping, but i cannot log in. At the console i can type in the user and the nothing happens, system has to reboot.
All servers are Hewlett Packard Proliant G4,G5,G6 with 32bit and 64bit. No errors or hints in the systemlog.
Update manager freezes when updating. I recently tried installing tor manually through wget and then gpg, as per the instructions on the website. My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx 64 bit. Kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic on an hp touchsmart tm2t.The issue here is this: The update manager starts and has a list of updates. I click "Install Updates" and it asks for my password. I type it in and then a window with the title "Downloading Package Files" appears, but no content is displayed in the window. It hangs here indefinitely. When I go to restart or shut down, it tells me that the program "AT SPI Registry" is not responding.The workaround I found was to simply do it from the command line ('sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade') however there are still updates that show up in the Update Manager and it looks like some of the updates are to the kernel itself.

After that both systems hang with a black screen, running high CPU as I could hear the CPU fans running at max speed. Waited on both systems, but had to hard reset both.
#1 (using ext3, but mounted as ext2) tried to reboot, but had a LOT of file system issues that had to be resolved (fsck). After that the Video driver had to be reinstalled. Finally the system did reboot, but all icons on all GNOME desktops (~/Desktop) are white and have the ".desktop" extension in their name.
#2 (using ext4) came backup fine, but also required the video driver to be reinstalled. After that the system worked fine.
Still wondering how to resolve the GNOME Desktop Icon issue with #1. Tried to create a new user, but that had the same effect for the icons (launchers) in ~/Desktop. Icons for "Home", "Trash" and connected networks do display the normal names and have a normal image.
I have an odd issue that someone has hopefully seen before or can provide a next step. Firstly, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 about 7 months ago and things ran fine. I then did an upgrade (via apt-get) to the 9.10 kernel: Current: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Still, I had a properly functioning system. I then decided to install selinux since I was interested in learning how to set it up and get familiar with it's security features. Every time I try to use my update manager, it freezes when it gets to the point where it's supposed to download. The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. I'm using Ubuntu version 9.10.

It make sit unusable. Also it doesn't support the dual scrolling feature that came with the computer. Whenever I put more than one finger on the touch pad the cursor goes wild.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just updated (through Update Manager) to the latest Linux kernel, (2.6.32-23, I believe) and now Ubuntu will not boot to the desktop.
It gets as far as finishing fsck on all of the drives, and successfully completes checks if necessary, but after that it just comes to a halt and won't proceed any further.
The last messages on screen when it freezes are (ignoring the fsck success reports):
init: ureadahead-other main process (954) terminated with status 4

These messages were appearing before, though.
The only way I seem to be able to boot now is by selecting the previous kernel (2.6.32-22) in GRUB.

I am running debian squeeze amd64 i am having trouble with the internet is running real slow on iceweasel ,and update manager freezes when is updating how can i improve this.
View 10 Replies View RelatedTried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.
After yesterday system update the x server won't start up anymore. It locks immediately with blank screen leaving the computer unresponsible until hard reboot. I hat to once again go with the "vesa" driver, as I mentoined earlier in another thread it is a life saver, always works. My video card is integrated Radeon HD3250 - video driver was fglrx from ATI itself. "radeon" driver now reports that modesetting is not supported and will not load with EE-type X server error.
Anyone else experienced this? Are there any changes in the most recent X server that once again break compatibility with the official ATI driver?

I tried to upgrade to Lucid Linx while in Karmic Koala but the installation process froze while doing something with "memtest86+". CTRL-C got it to unfreeze and finish the installation but on a restart when I chose the Ubuntu OS it kept restarting rather than booting. I decided to start fresh.
So I booted into Vista and uninstalled Wubi Karmic Koala and proceeded to do a fresh install of Wubi Lucid Lynx. The installation, including the reboot, went smoothly. However, when the Update Manager was installing software a new screen popped up saying this:

So I leave the checkbox unchecked and click on forward. Nothing happens. All the Update Manager windows remain the same and nothing changes when I hit the Forward button. The "Applying Changes" window is stuck at "Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) ...".
Can I safely force quit the Update Manager installation? Why am I getting that message about Grub? I didn't choose anything like that.
A while ago, I was applying the new kernel updates (I guess 2.6.32-24, or the one after it.. well, the latest generic update) and accidentally powered off my laptop. And now it wont come up. It comes to the logon page, and neither the keyboard, nor the mouse work. Cant even switch to the TTYs. When I boot with the recovery mode, I just see a black screen (probably the TTYs dont work) but after "processing" some time, nothing happens. Not sure if the keyboard works, as I cannot turn on/off the capslock switch, but ctrl+alt+del works
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis morning I noticed that there was an update to the kernel ready in the Update Manager, to version 2.6.35-25. I let Update Manager do its thing and I restarted my computer when it prompted me to.If I select 2.6.35-25-generic in Grub, Ubuntu boots just fine, all the way to the login screen. However, after entering my password, it looks like Gnome is going to load, but it never does. All I see is the default wallpaper and nothing else; the system locks up and does not respond to any input; and the fans start spinning at full-speed. My only option at this point is to do a hard shutdown. I have no problems if I select the kernel I was using previously: 2.6.35-24-generic

View 1 Replies View RelatedA section of the hard drive on my laptop is damaged but the laptop has genearlly been running fine as it seems to very rarely touch that section (once every few months). However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?

I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but my mouse is behaving erroneously.It,s automatically actives many thing where its pointer, like asking for deleting the panel, opens many windows and so on....sometimes its freezes and didn't shows any movement, in that case i have to plug out my mouse cable from the cpu and again i have plugin to fix it

I worked out all the screen changes etc it hasn't missed a beat until now after a week of usage it freezes during bootup it gets as far as the introductory melody then freezes. It sounds as if it goes into a loop during playing the tune. I'm involved in an anti-malaria project if I can't solve this I've lost research data which will take time to recalculate. If all else fails Ill go back to 10.10. I'm using a different computer for this post driven by Vista

X just freezes whenever I close a window, I have to kill X when that happens. For some reason it doesn't do that in TWM, though.
I have just installed Zenwalk linux. My only problem (so far) is that now that it is installed it won't boot. After selecting the Zenwalk linux option in lilo, it says

After that it loads up the boot screen and hangs. Is there a command that I can add to the boot line to try to make it so that I can see any errors?
I was trying to restart the X server with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart, and doing so brought me to a black screen with some messages I don't remember, and left me hanging like that. So I had to do a hard reboot. So now when booting I get to the ubuntu logo on the purple background and it just hangs like that. Doesn't accept keyboard input, I can't alt+d or ctrl+alt+f2. I edited the ubuntu line in the grub menu and removed quiet but that didn't do anything. How do I diagnose this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I launch Firefox and go visiting some websites, I notice it freezes for about 10 seconds. Not always in the same websites, but it always happens sometime in the first 2 or 3 minutes of running. I can see the hard disk led is ON all the time the browser is hung.
My operating system is Linux and I don't currently have any extension/plugin installed here.
I have no form completion, no history and have no more than 20-30 bookmarks.
Has somebody noticed something similar, or know how can I debug this to find out what Firefox is doing or trying to do?
