I am a new user of ubuntu and have found that the Update Manager freezes when I press Install Updates button. what to do next as I am way behind with the updates.

My Update Manager stopped working for last three weeks. When I press button INSTALL UPDATES in Update Manager, nothing happens just Reading packing information is executed and when it is finished nothing continues,so nothing I chosen is installed. I have tried to fix broken packages in Synaptic Manager, but no change.

I am relatively new to Ubuntu, so this might be an easy fix. When I try to install my updates with Update Manager I get this error message: p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } W: Failed to fetch [URL]..Could not connect to 172.16.30.51:3128 (172.16.30.51). - connect (110: Connection timed out) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tu1.3_i386.deb Unable to connect to 172.16.30.51:3128: (and it goes on like this for a while) Also, when I go to install software, I get this message: Requires installation of untrusted packages. and if I click OK, nothing happens. The software won't install. I have a feeling this is because I can't update my system.
View 5 Replies View RelatedInstalled Macbuntu on my new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. At onset was able to run update Manager with no problem. However after a couple of days and since I did the theme to make my ubuntu look like a Mac...it doesn't want to install any updates it receives. It says another program is running but I'm not running anything other than the Update Manager. Any suggestions as to how to fix this or should I drop the theme and go back to the regular window theme that came with the version of Ubuntu 10.10 I downloaded from the main site.

When I open the Update Manager, it says there is 399 updates. When I click install, after about ten seconds this pops up:Code:An internal system error has occuredA problem we were not expected has occured. Please report this bug in your distribution bugtracker wth the error description.

After click on install updates and entering password, a message says "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? Yes/No.
If I answer No, this message appears:

If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.
Update Manager popped up today and has a few Recommended updates for my machine. Included in the Recommended updates is a new kernel (2.6.32-25). Next to several of the kernel/header updates is the text "(New install)". What does the "New install" text mean here? Will installing the kernel/header updates do anything destructive to the system?

I've tried the -d, -c, --check-dist-upgrades, --devel-release, -p, --proposed, and --dist-upgrade. I'm completely up to date on 9.10, but I want to upgrade to 10.04!

Please free at least an additional 495M of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'." I ran sudo apt-get clean n it did nothing.

I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx 64 bit. Kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic on an hp touchsmart tm2t.The issue here is this: The update manager starts and has a list of updates. I click "Install Updates" and it asks for my password. I type it in and then a window with the title "Downloading Package Files" appears, but no content is displayed in the window. It hangs here indefinitely. When I go to restart or shut down, it tells me that the program "AT SPI Registry" is not responding.The workaround I found was to simply do it from the command line ('sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade') however there are still updates that show up in the Update Manager and it looks like some of the updates are to the kernel itself.

I currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (The beta) running on my Laptop. I want to know if it's possible to get 11.04 (Full) through the update manager? If so, how? Secondly, if I wanted to just go back to 10.10, could i install it over the current 11.04? I don't want to copy files over or anything like that, just a fresh start.

Every time I try to use my update manager, it freezes when it gets to the point where it's supposed to download. The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. I'm using Ubuntu version 9.10.

I got some updates today from Update Manager & when I booted up after instillation my computer was forced into low graphics mode. Removed & then reinstalled the FGLRX drivers from the Hardware Drivers tool, rebooted & still the ATI control panel is borked.I believe one of the updates were called fglrx-modaliases.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
