When I try to update from a Debian notification of new updates the update window freezes without showing the updates. When I try to update in a terminal, I get the following message: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?". If another process is using it, I know nothing about it. How do I solve this problem?

After click on install updates and entering password, a message says "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? Yes/No.
If I answer No, this message appears:

If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.
Update manager freezes when updating. I recently tried installing tor manually through wget and then gpg, as per the instructions on the website. My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.

I click "Install Updates" and it asks for my password. I type it in and then a window with the title "Downloading Package Files" appears, but no content is displayed in the window. It hangs here indefinitely. When I go to restart or shut down, it tells me that the program "AT SPI Registry" is not responding.The workaround I found was to simply do it from the command line ('sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade') however there are still updates that show up in the Update Manager and it looks like some of the updates are to the kernel itself.

The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. It make sit unusable. Also it doesn't support the dual scrolling feature that came with the computer. Whenever I put more than one finger on the touch pad the cursor goes wild.

I tried to upgrade to Lucid Linx while in Karmic Koala but the installation process froze while doing something with "memtest86+". CTRL-C got it to unfreeze and finish the installation but on a restart when I chose the Ubuntu OS it kept restarting rather than booting. I decided to start fresh.
So I booted into Vista and uninstalled Wubi Karmic Koala and proceeded to do a fresh install of Wubi Lucid Lynx. The installation, including the reboot, went smoothly. However, when the Update Manager was installing software a new screen popped up saying this:

So I leave the checkbox unchecked and click on forward. Nothing happens. All the Update Manager windows remain the same and nothing changes when I hit the Forward button. The "Applying Changes" window is stuck at "Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) ...".
Can I safely force quit the Update Manager installation? Why am I getting that message about Grub? I didn't choose anything like that.
I am a new user of ubuntu and have found that the Update Manager freezes when I press Install Updates button. what to do next as I am way behind with the updates.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have fedora 13 64 bit installed on my desktop. I have i3-530, 2G ram, wd 500g sata, ide samsumg dvd-rw, asus h55 mb, geforce 9600 low profile.
problem is f13 often almost always freezes at boot up.i.e., after grub, that blue heart hangs on there waiting to be filled up.. but wait forever.
what might be the problem?
Not sure why I get the same result between (amd64) debian, kubuntu, xubuntu, but the screen will pixelate once the desktop is fully loaded, sometimes when an app window opens like konsole/terminal.
I've tried various combinations, with & without the GeForce PCIx, even the live CDs freeze. Please trust me when I say I exhaust searching for what's already been asked/posted/resolved before posting, yes even Google, I'm at a loss... It freezes like a kernel panic because Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't do jack, nor Ctrl+Alt+BkSp, would dmesg have logged anything useful?

For last week this persistent problem.Only way around is boot up and do manual update before notification kicks.As I type the update manager is sitting there doing nothing. Another reboot needed.

I had some troubles related to the installation of network and nvidia drivers, but now the system seems to work pretty well. The only problem i'm having is that when I try to use tools like the graphic update or the graphic packet manager, or the graphic tool for adding/removing software, after I write the password they ask me, they freeze, but still seem keeping loading something, as the cursor usually keeps turning, and, on the lower bar of Gnome, something like "Granting rights..." appears (i've the italian version so i don't know if i'm translating well or not). Sometime they freeze before the request of authentication and then nothing happens, sometime they simply don't start. Also, sometime the update manager starts but freezes when i click on the button that checks for new updates.Maybe it could be useful for you to know that I installed the 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 kernel because my network had problems with the 2.6.26-2-amd64, could this be a problem? i also installed the last Nvidia drivers, and i think nothing more, just the system updates from the stable repositories.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

I'm not sure where to report this. I'm the only user of this computer. I tried running dpkg as directed, but that results in the following:

I'd sure like to update, and not reinstall.
So far I have just used the CLI to upgrade KDE, and I get notified of upgrades once a day, where a popup shows when new upgrades are available. However, when I push the "install upgrades" button, nothing happens. In Gnome, all I had to do was click the update notifier and click install. I am pretty confident the same is posible in KDE4. I have searched the web trying to find a solution, but I can't find anything. I am probably missing some packages. Can someone help me configure:
1. Update intervals for the KDE update manager, and
2. GUI updates for the KDE4 desktop.
Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.
I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.
Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.
Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.
Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.

I have scim 1.4-9 (latest) installed for Japanese input. It works fine. I have no problems with it. However, when I launch Synaptic or update manager a duplicate instance of scim starts.This is on Debian Squeeze. See below:

It's not a huge deal, because when I close said programs, the duplicate process stop. I just find it odd because these are the only two programs that seem to cause it. Oh, and I'm using Gnome, if that matters.
I have just updated my Squeeze system. The update included a newer version of network-manager (and it can not be more than a few hours old). After the update all network functionality on my machine (via knetwork-manager) is broken. The GUI applet has no effect.
Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.
I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.
