When I try to update from a Debian notification of new updates the update window freezes without showing the updates. When I try to update in a terminal, I get the following message: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?". If another process is using it, I know nothing about it. How do I solve this problem?

Update manager freezes when updating. I recently tried installing tor manually through wget and then gpg, as per the instructions on the website. My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.

I'm running 10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx 64 bit. Kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic on an hp touchsmart tm2t.The issue here is this: The update manager starts and has a list of updates. I click "Install Updates" and it asks for my password. I type it in and then a window with the title "Downloading Package Files" appears, but no content is displayed in the window. It hangs here indefinitely. When I go to restart or shut down, it tells me that the program "AT SPI Registry" is not responding. The workaround I found was to simply do it from the command line ('sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade') however there are still updates that show up in the Update Manager and it looks like some of the updates are to the kernel itself.

Every time I try to use my update manager, it freezes when it gets to the point where it's supposed to download. The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. I'm using Ubuntu version 9.10.

I've recently purchased a HP Mini and I've noticed that while using Ubuntu Netbook Remix it tends to freeze or serverly slow down whenever I use Update Manager. It make sit unusable. Also it doesn't support the dual scrolling feature that came with the computer. Whenever I put more than one finger on the touch pad the cursor goes wild.

IBM ThinkPad X61
Windows Vista Home
Wubi Ubuntu Karmic
I tried to upgrade to Lucid Linx while in Karmic Koala but the installation process froze while doing something with "memtest86+". CTRL-C got it to unfreeze and finish the installation but on a restart when I chose the Ubuntu OS it kept restarting rather than booting. I decided to start fresh.
So I booted into Vista and uninstalled Wubi Karmic Koala and proceeded to do a fresh install of Wubi Lucid Lynx. The installation, including the reboot, went smoothly. However, when the Update Manager was installing software a new screen popped up saying this:
Window Content:
[Title:] Debconf on Ubuntu
[Message:] Configuring grub-pc
[Checkbox:] Continue without installing Grub? (unchecked)
[Help button: explains consequences of not installing grub]
[Back button] (greyed out)
[Forward button]
So I leave the checkbox unchecked and click on forward. Nothing happens. All the Update Manager windows remain the same and nothing changes when I hit the Forward button. The "Applying Changes" window is stuck at "Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) ...".
Can I safely force quit the Update Manager installation? Why am I getting that message about Grub? I didn't choose anything like that.

Ran the update manager, system was pretty much up to date, only a few files to download. Was it ever SLOW. Most of the time I can download from other sites about 650 kB/s. The update was around 10 kB/s and slower sometimes. What is wrong? Just a lot of people updating at the same time?

I have been using 10.04 since quite a long time now. and everything was working smooth until last update and all of a sudden my firefox and chrome are slow, really slow on internet. At first I could not believe that ubuntu could be so slow so I called my ISP provider and fight with them. later on I found that my XP runs fast, and Finally the problem is on my ubuntu system. I looked online and disabled my ipv6 but still the issue is not solved. I even tried openDNS and that did not help. What's going on on recent update?

So i just finally installed Debian Jessie OS, replacing Ubuntu. But now it is running extremely slow. It's not internet connection. The internet speed is running fine (Videos load quickly), but it's like the system freezes every 30 seconds or so. A video can be fully loaded but still stops and starts constantly. Just browsing the internet, or non-internet things do the same also. I switched back to Ubuntu to see if it was different on there, but Ubuntu is running fine.

All of a sudden Update Manager cannot connect to Internet. I just recently fixed a problem I had with playdeb not installing the games due to a internet connection problem (fixed by downloading the script instead of terminal method), this is the only big change I done recently other than downloading documents and pictures.
Here is the detail as to where or why it cannot connect code...

I have a copy of 9.10 that was downloaded at the time of the official 9.10 release. I don't know if there has been improvements made in this area since then. But but anyone know why 9.10 accesses web pages realllll slowly for me. It seems to boot up normally and web pages load normally but connecting to the web page takes a long time, like 10-15 seconds.

Here's my specs:
AMD Semprom 1.8Ghz
512 MB RAM
Nvidia TNT2 M64 @ 32 MB
I know it's old lol but probably better than the onboard graphics. The computer is a Compaq Presario sr1403wm. I checked proprietary drivers and there are none available. The graphics run smooth on the desktop and I don't have Compiz enabled. is the graphics card just too old for XBMC? Weird thing is, I also have the same problem in Ubuntu on my good desktop when it's connected to my TV. Just using a normal VGA cable. If I have it connected to my computer monitor using a DVI cable, there's no problem. The only thing I thought of was maybe the resolution was too high, but that made no difference with either computer. If this computer is too old for XBMC, what would be second best in line? MythTV? Doesn't need TV capabilities. Just to watch what's already on the computer. I just really like the XBMC interface and the fact that I can boot right into the interface and of course all the cool plugins and whatnot.

I would like to kindly ask you for some advice. Allmost a month I am experiencing strange behaviour of the system. I use Debian Wheezy 64bit on Intel Core i3 processor, SSD hadr drive, 4GB ram. Problem is, that sometimes the system becomes very slow when booting kernel, the kernel booting stops for 5-8 seconds on something (timimng, Processor initialization or something related, but not always the same thing) and then the system is booting noticeable slower than usual and when in the graphic environment (I use gnome) everything seems to be slower than usual, the typing in console is slow with lags and videos (movies) are not watchable due to freezes and lags.
I was trying to figure out what is causing it, the only thing I came up with is, that when I wait 10-15 sec in grub menu before selecting the kernel and after some time I manualy hit enter, it usualy boots fast and with no additional issues in the system. Sometimes it boots up normally even without this longer waiting time, but sometimes not. It is strange.

I am using debian(lenny) on a pc coexisting with windows. I use grub to decide which o/s to boot.
I picked debian, logged in as a regular user. I selected "Administration" under the "System" tab and then selected "Update Manager". I had to provide the root password.
I was asked to insert Binary DVD-1 and was told to use smart update. I did at which time 16 files begun downloading at between 4400 B/s and 4800 B/s from the Security server. It looks like it is downloading a new linux image.
Is there any way to speed this up?

My system is rather flaky as of late. I was trying, yet again, to get the internal bluetooth (rtl8723be) to work, so I could free up one of only two usb ports on the lenovo ideapad 100. In my blinding brilliance I typed make uninstall, after make did not work (why I did this, I still don't know), and I noticed that it said btusb.ko was removed, as expected at reboot, no bluetooth adaptors were found, I tried reinstalling bluetooth via apt-get, no success, so finally I just ran apt-get update, and apt-get upgrade, once finished, my system did not want to reboot with a sudo init 6, so I hard powered it off and restarted, after it's obligatory fsck, everything okie dokie, it booted up and voila, bluetooth working again, or should I say, the usb adaptor bluetooth, not the rtl8723be.
So I figured, ah, the heck with it, just enjoy my speaker for watching a movie via kodi, and that's when I see that it's buffering continuously so I check a couple different speed tests, and my wifi is only pulling 2.0ish mb down, I booted into windows 10, just to check, and sure enough, same result.....so I don't know if the adapter is dying or what, so, I figure, I'll try and update the driver, this is where I run into not being able to run any make commands they all error with:
Code: Select allmake[1]: Entering directory '/lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/build'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'modules'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/build'
Makefile:393: recipe for target 'LINUX' failed
make: *** [LINUX] Error 2
I have installed the linux headers, and followed this post here, [URL] .... (substituting my uname -r of course)
still having the sudo init 6 not working, and the slow wifi, as well as internal bluetooth not working.
Code: Select all3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4 (2016-02-29) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Before you answer I am just curious about this. I certainly would never do this nor recommend it. However because I have never tried this I was curious if it actually would happen. At the end of Lenny, would it pop up in the update-manager-gnome that a new release "Squeeze" is available? I am just curious.

I just installed, and evolution doesn't seem to think it has internet. The icon with the power cord in the bottom left is unplugged, and send/receive is greyed out. Internet is working , but it is not using network manager, since network manager says no internet is connected. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Wheezy gets daily small updates.General things go smoothly - get the notification and install, job done.By occasionally it stalls - it says do partial or full updates and just sits there. For last week this persistent problem.Only way around is boot up and do manual update before notification kicks. As I type the update manager is sitting there doing nothing. Another reboot needed.

I've been dual booting Windows 7 and Debian on my desktop ever since. But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).

I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

I just installed Debian (Stable, 5.0.6) for the first time. I had some troubles related to the installation of network and nvidia drivers, but now the system seems to work pretty well. The only problem i'm having is that when I try to use tools like the graphic update or the graphic packet manager, or the graphic tool for adding/removing software, after I write the password they ask me, they freeze, but still seem keeping loading something, as the cursor usually keeps turning, and, on the lower bar of Gnome, something like "Granting rights..." appears (i've the italian version so i don't know if i'm translating well or not). Sometime they freeze before the request of authentication and then nothing happens, sometime they simply don't start. Also, sometime the update manager starts but freezes when i click on the button that checks for new updates.Maybe it could be useful for you to know that I installed the 2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64 kernel because my network had problems with the 2.6.26-2-amd64, could this be a problem? i also installed the last Nvidia drivers, and i think nothing more, just the system updates from the stable repositories.

I have used Debian on this computer for over a year now. A little while back update manager stopped working. It now prompts me to update a varying number of packages (85-97), but when I try and run it I get this message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I'm not sure where to report this. I'm the only user of this computer. I tried running dpkg as directed, but that results in the following:
shop-amd-rebuild:/home/steve# dpkg --configure -a
Setting up linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 (2.6.26-26lenny1) ...
Running depmod.
Running mkinitramfs-kpkg.
[Code]....
I'd sure like to update, and not reinstall.
