I have an offline machine and the full 8 DVD repository set and have added them to the system and they work fine to install packages. I used jigdo to download the update 6.0.1 DVD and the "packages" file and the one inside of "packages.gz" are empty files. This prevents the disk from working at all. I'm not sure who to report this to.
View 4 RepliesI am running Squeeze AMD64 and install updates every couple of days. I installed the latest batch yesterday and got a "restart system" message, so rebooted. The usual messages scrolled past for a while, then the screen went blank, and that was it. I tried a couple of times with same result. I booted into maintenance mode to try to find the cause of the problem. Looking at /var/log/messages there is some strange activity going on. Unfortunately I can't easily paste the relevant portion of the file into this posting as the network isn't working (I am posting this from a laptop), but roughly what I am seeing is this:
PGD <some stuff>
CPU 0
Modules linked in: <long list of modules>
Pid, 1841, comm: Xorg Not Tainted <some stuff>
<about 20 lines of assorted values>

and this repeats several times (presumably stopping when I hit the reset button). Sometimes it's CPU 0 and sometimes CPU 1, it mostly involves Xorg in Pid line, and apart from the first instance mostly reports Xorg Tainted.
I could just reinstall but would rather repair as it would be both quicker and more instructive.
i'm used eeepc here the situation i've already install squeeze AMD64 KDE but i want to try using i386 gnome which is more friendly for my eeepc spec. problem is there other boot in my pc. i'm currently using win7, ubuntu 10.10 32 gnome, and ubuntu ultimate 64 gnome and i don't have external HDD.
Question is i want to remove all linux OS and keep my win7 is it ok if i'm using Gparted to delete all linux OS and then installing deb squeeze i386. my next project is to build portable server on eeepc.
For anyone using Blueman with Testing (Squeeze), todays Python upgrade to version 2.6 stops it from working due to a Blueman bug. This has been fixed in blueman version 1.21-4, which you can install from SID if you don't want to wait the 10 days for the normal migration.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter going from Debian Lenny to squeeze, everything was going OK, apart from 8 broken packages of which I was easily able to fix 7 of the packages. The last one is x-org core, which comes up with the error message /var/cache/apt/archives/udev_150-2_i386.deb returned an error. From all my research it indicates that an update from kernel 2.6.26-2-686 to a later version is required due to 150 udev requiring the support of the CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED. My next question is where to start, do I need to add a linux-image repository in sources.list and then use the command-line or am I headed in the wrong direction.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAlright, I edited "/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server" and set "eth0" as the only thing listed for interfaces. I also have the code below in "/etc/dhcp/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf" and I even copied it to "/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf" for good measure, and I can't get the DHCP server to start. As an intermediate to advanced user, I am under the high assumption that it is broken since everything in the docs has been set. I have googled for two days and cannot find a fix, so before I report it as a broken package, would somebody with more experience with the package chime in?

I hid my wireless setup because it contains my WiFi network info including key. This box is routing, doing DNS resolution, and firewalling just fine. I just cannot get the friggin' DHCP server to start no matter what I try.
Oh, and is it safe to delete "/etc/dhcp" or "/etc/dhcp3"? They appear to be duplicates of each other...
I just got done installing Debian Squeeze on a system..Everything seems to work where audio is concerned, except for audacious.I can get streaming music from vlc/totem as well as play music files (mp3, ogg, flac, ect.).I was wondering if anyone else experiences this problem..It should be noted that I have the Debian multimedia repository enabled as well.When running audacious from terminal and trying to open up an mp3 file I get this message:"madplug: open_audio failed: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin."
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently did an update squeeze and the next day after I restarted there was only a blank screen.The laptop started, the system installed, the wifi connected but no gdm.I started in recovery mode and tried;
# invoke-rc.d gdm start, and got the response that it was an invalid command or words similar to that.
# startx, gives me a blank screen with an unblinking cursor.
# apt-get install gnome, tells me that the latest version is already installed.
If it has any bearing on the issue, I dual boot with Ubuntu and that works fine.Is there anything to be done to fix the problem?
Just did a recent update with Sid, and upon reboot, I noticed that the theming engine appears to be out of whack a little. I've provided a screen shot for some clarity. As you can see, some programs that open do not use the set GTK theme, but instead reverts back to default. I've also noticed that in appearances, I now get that message that says pixmap engine is required, even though I have it installed. The biggest update was to gnome 3.0.2. At the moment, it doesn't affect usability at all, and I'm hesitant to undo the updates, as things that didn't work before now works! Ahh Sid! Living life on the dangerous side I is! If anyone can provide some insight into this issue (a fix is not of high priority),

I cannot update my system either with Update Manager nor with Synaptic. The system tries to download the updates, and then generates an error message that I have broken packages. So, I click on Fix Broken Packages, etc., and when running get the following error message:

This appears to me to be a system bug. I'm running the 32-bit version of Squeeze. Re-install, or ?
I just did an update of my Debian system from lenny to squeeze as described here. I got some errors during the install, saying that glibc couldn't be updated. I did an apt-get -f install, which gives me the following warning: WARNING: this version of the GNU libc requires kernel version 2.6.18 or later. Please upgrade your kernel before installing glibc.
The installation of a 2.6 kernel could ask you to install a new libc first, this is NOT a bug, and should NOT be reported. While on the 32 bit version i haven't problem. I use different profile for the stable and the nigthly versions. Note: I use the binary taken directly from mozilla and update regulary it directly from the browser. On the attachment you can see what should be appear after the update.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI rely on NFS shares to mount home directories and the shared apt cache on my home workstations. Since the last update, rpc.statd has broken and the service fails to run at boot. When init encounters nfs-common, the system shows: Starting NFS common utilities: statd failed!
and then it hangs on trying to mount /var/cache/apt
if anybody who uses testing has any clue as to whether there is a fix coming from the upstream, or if there is a config fix for it.
Yesterday I installed some updates on my Jessie system (I don't remember if the kernel was also updated). After rebooting the system nothing happens after the "Loading intial ramdisk"-message. If I boot in recovery mode the boot stops at the message:

If I add "nouveau.modeset=0" temporary to the GRUB-entry for the recovery mode, it will boot up in the console-mode.
I was able to get an ethernet connection with "dhclient eth0" and removed the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" package. Then I installed it and the removed gnome-desktop again. Before removing it, aptitude said the following to the package:

Now it only says:
Code: Select alli  xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
But this didn't change my problem. I found a similar case in the internet, but there were no solutions for it: [URL] ....
The next thing I would do, is to install the proprietary nvidia-drivers, but since I have a GTX 960 video card, I would have to use experimental drivers. So I'm afraid to make it more worse trying to install this drivers.
Also I'm not sure if it really is a driver-specific of kernel-specific problem. My kernel is version 3.16.0-4-amd64.
Last nigth I upgrade my system to squeeze and it whent well except for grub-pc and udev. If i try to upgrade now udev will not install do to problems with the kernel version and grub-pc can't seem to find the boot image.

yesterday I updated my squeeze amd64 on my Phenom X4 and now it is not booting anymore. Have you experienced the same problem?
After that I noticed the shutdown was not working anymore, it just restarted instead of powering down. This morning it wouldn't boot squeeze anymore, when grub starts and prints "Welcome to grub" (or something like that) the list of operating systems is not shown.
I noticed the updated also included grub and I saw it correctly detected my operating systems.
I am planning to boot knoppix soon and try to reinstall grub from chroot, but currently I am at work.

I have done a update from Lenny to Squeeze with the update manager within Gnome. And there was a error 126 and the update broke off leaving me with a non working system. The system does start into Debian Squeeze to the command line. Users are in place and a login is possible. X does not work and there a lot of broken and defect packages. I want to repair my system. Is a restore without losing the configuration possible?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI updated today and naturally removed the old nVidia driver, compiled it again after a reboot, and then rebooted again for good measure. I can log into KDE4, but all I get is a cursor and a solid black background. I deleted the ~/.kde, ~/.local, and quite a few other directories from my normal user account using the shell so KDE would reconfigure my settings when I logged in again, but it's the same problem. I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and added the "Compositing" section with "Enabled=false" to rule out compositing. Now when I log into the system I get the default KDE4 wallpaper and a mouse cursor, but nothing else. I believe the latest update broke KDE4, or am I missing something? I have recreated my xorg.conf as well, and only set it to use the nVidia driver. So what can I do now?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been having problems with Squeeze last day or so, but thought would do all system updates available in hope this would stop the system crashes only to find that upon reboot my dock of choice, Cairo-Dock, which is set to auto start puts a message on screen saying it has no plugins available and that it will not run as a result. And it just won`t run. The update included updates for Cairo Dock and it`s plugins, which it seems have all updated correctly and package manager says every available plugin IS installed as it was before, what I can do to correct this annoying issue?

I've been using the testing branch for quite some time with no major issues. However, yesterday's upgrade (I run dist-upgrade roughly every day or two) I've been experiencing some very low FPS rate - about 150-250 according to glxgears. My gfx card is a bit old - Radeon Xpress 1100 (200M).
Xorg.log and syslog are both fine. I've tried forcing the "radeon" video driver in xorg.conf as well as the automatic "ati" value without any effect.
It could be a bug, or it could be something resulting from the upgrade of any of the packages.
So I'm pretty awful at keeping Debian up to date, I guess. I'm using cron-apt to fetch updates every night, then apply them whenever I get around to it. Well, I neglected that last part for a month or two, and after some routine downtime to clear the case of dust, I decided it was time to upgrade. So I ran the command, everything checked out fine, and I was on my merry way. Until a half-hour ago when I accidentally shutdown the computer (I use the same zsh prompt on each computer, so I got them confused.) I turned it back on, only to be greeted with a black screen after all the services started up.
Everything works: ircd, MPD, etc. EXCEPT, of course, X. At first I thought the update broke SLIM, but after checking htop and doing a killall slim, it doesn't appear to be running (the screen remains black.) I hit Control-Alt-f2 to get to get back to a terminal, then tried doing startx, which freezes the computer entirely. All the network services stop, I can't SSH in, etc. It's dead. If I'm not mistaken, Xorg.0.log should say something, but I'm not a huge expert on it. The last line isn't an error, I can tell you that. So what's the deal here? apt-get remove xorg and start over?
After the updating the synaptics driver in wheezy, I can no longer tap to click. This includes single-finger taps in the center and corners. Here is the relevant section from my xorg.conf

After updating Squeeze (i386) on my Via C7 laptop with the Via Openchrome video driver vlc video ouput shows only alternating white/green grainy vertical bars. I tried changing the video output driver to x11 and sdl without success. I'll be trying to find a fix and if successful I'll post back. For the rest of you just beware of the latest upgrades. More information - My AMD/ATI desktop also running Squeeze (amd64) updated fine. It has the onboard ATI 2400 video driver.

These include some important packages, like network-manager-gnome for example. Was it really intended to be removed? Without it, it's impossible to manage network connections from Gnome (only manual option of editing interfaces config is left). Is it a bug, or some incomplete intention? apt suggests to autoremove these packages. Should they all be retained, or only some of them, or it's supposed to be none? Removing some of them makes sense for me (like Epiphany for example), but some not at all.
Have my proxy running on Lenny and tried to upgrade to squeeze. Originally the system was installed on Etch and upgrading to Lenny was no problem. In the system i have two RAID1 volumes, md0 for / and md1 for /home. For upgrading i added the sources to my apt.conf and startet dist-upgrade. During the installation procedure, when installing udev I was advised to install the new kernel first and continue upgrade after booting the kernel. so I installed the kernel by "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686. When generating initramfs there was a message, that there are no arrays defined in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I took a look and there were none. mdadm seems to have been update before.
I then added the lines for RAID definition and added the data for UUID The UUID I got from the output of "mdadm --detail /dev/md0"
What I don't understand: blkid gives the same UUIDs for the first partitions of the RAID and a different UUID for /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 than mdadm --detail The update of initramfs for kernel 2.6.32 then gives this result:

It was no surprise that I needed to reinstall the nvidia driver after a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel update a couple days ago, but I was surprised that it didn't work. I've had to drop back to a kernel I compiled a few weeks ago, which is basically the stock 2.6.32-5-686 from that time, with a timer frequency of 1000 and desktop preemption.
Vid card is GeForce PCX 5750

I don't see it in this one, but on a previous attempt, I saw an error message that said no nvidia graphics card was found. I've been suspicious that the card is slowly dying, based on problems like gray blocks on the screen or (in an older lenny install) persistence of the contents of a window appearing inside a terminal, when I switch desktops from the one where the browser is open to the one where the terminal is open. Scrolling the artifact off-screen and back, or window-shading the terminal and then un-shading it causes it to re-draw correctly.
I run the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel on Squeeze and the bad nvidia drivers. A recent update, and pardon for not noting which, broke 3d games on my box. From a terminal neverputt yields the following error:

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke! Someone else saw it, too, and reported it but his post remains alone in the thread as of 10 minutes ago.
