i have a system which consist of window vista and linux os both . Few day back i have partitioned my c drive in window vista by using partition magic software . but when i restart , window not boot .

1. What is it called when you move a PDF window while it is loading and the window manager does not keep up with the image, (it gets all blurry when the window is moved?)Why does this happen?

I have installed fedora core 9 with a successful installment but the GRUB is not loading Vista BOOT MGR is Missing root chain loader +1. Booting Other does not load.

I need to disable data prevention execution whenever I do boot Vista through GRUB but I don't know what command to use nor exactly where to put the command.On a single boot windows machine, all you would do is type the following at the command prompt and reboot: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOffAlso, GRUB lists my VISTA boot option simply as "other." Is there a way to change that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedK well i was trying to remove some partition since ubuntu took a lot of space so i messed around with ubintu until i found some partition editor. i went in system>Administrator>disk utility then i selected my 320 gb hard disk and deleted partitions (i didnt know what i was deleting them from). i restarted my computer and clicked on my vista on boot menu but i got an error which ive forgoten it was something like no disk. after that i clicked on ubuntu recovery and did update grub, then clicked on repair something (i forgot) it took like 30 minutes to repair but after that my vista dissapeared now i have 2 different linux in my boot menu. 1 is a linux 19 the other is a linux 22.

And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

I am running a dual-boot system (Windows Vista and Ubuntu) and after I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 I am unable to boot up Windows Vista.
How can I fix this? Grub is probably where the problem is; but my Windows partition of my hard drive is found and I can boot from it.
So I've install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my hard drive which had window vista installed first. After I've finished installing Ubuntu, i found out that there is only Ubuntu available on the GRUB and my Wiindow Vista is gone! What can I do to put or install back the Window Vista boot?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi usually use my pendrive in windows vista but when today i tried to open it in ubuntu 9.10 it does not show up. i know that it is mounted because i could see it in the "USB START UP DISC CREATOR" (IN SYSTEM->ADMINISTRATION->USB START UP DISC CREATOR) [See the screen shot. ]. i think since i had never tried to open my Pen drive in ubuntu before and always open it in win vista, that's why this problem is coming up.

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

I've a folder named "lynx" in my desktop . It contains ebooks - pdfs,chms etc . The problem is sometimes when i open the folder in nautilus , the folder keep loading forever and sometimes it shows two or three files and keep on loading . But at some other times , folder contents are displayed just as any other folder(i.e normal ).

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm on Vista (I dual boot by the way) I see that my hard drive is about 13Gb smaller than it used to be, but I have no access to Ubuntu's files. However, when I am on Ubuntu I have access to a drive (is it a drive?) I believe is called OS and when mounted it lets me access all of Vista's documents.
Also I do not understand the difference between /home, OS, and System Files (It might be named something else, but the icon looks like a hard drive I believe).
I realize all this is pretty vague, but do you know a way to block this connection? I feel like Harry Potter looking into Voldemort's mind (lol).
PS Despite the Voldemort reference I am not a MS Windows hater.
I installed Oracle Linux 5 and now I can not boot into Vista. However if I use Debian Live CD Vista is there and looks fine (as far as I can see). Is there a way I can use a live CD to fix grub? I have googled it but none of the commands I found worked.

What i ended up doing was taking the whole disc space simply because i absolutly hate windows and loved the general idea of linux where software should b accessible to everyone and free of charge.

When Windows tries to boot it goes to "GRUB" and says "partition not loaded". What are some GRUB commands? And is it possible to fix this without using the recovery CD?

I chose the option to install fedora on any free space, so it should have installed on the empty partition. When I boot up, there are two boot options. Fedora and Other. When I select other, it gives an error:BOOTMGR not found.Is there a way to add Windows Vista to the Grub Bootloader by editing the grub menu. I don't know if it will help, but here is what I get when I run fdisk in the terminal:
