General :: What Is It Called When You Move A PDF Window While It Is Loading

May 18, 2010

1. What is it called when you move a PDF window while it is loading and the window manager does not keep up with the image, (it gets all blurry when the window is moved?)Why does this happen?

2. Why is it that when a browser window is clicked to load a new address it won't always go to it. It has to be clicked again.

3 Why is it that sometimes IE is the only browser that will work on XP. FireFox and Opera will not load a page but IE will.

4 Why is it that Firefox on Linux sometimes everything inside the window is slow to appear. It has to be closed to fix it. When the contents does appear it is all at once.

5.Why is printing different things on Linux a problem. I have a lot of inconsistency with trying to print things from Evince. Some docs print and some won't. Copying and pasting is also a problem for Evince. Why?

6. Is there a way to have Linux Shut down after computer activity has stopped and not just with a timer. Lets say I'm trying to download something and I want it to turn off after it has finished with the down load.

7. Why are some Web pages biased towards Windows. I notice that some java scripts will only run right on Windows machines with IE. A lot of on-line forms are like this.

8. Can (MOVIES, PICTURES AND MUSIC) torrents be downloaded on Linux without risk?

9. It seams that Linux browsers do not keep previous web pages in memory so if you want to go back Linux always has to reload them from the server. Why is this?

10. Why is it that browsers sometimes won't indicate that the page has finished loading, "ever".

11. Why does Linux turn on the number-lock when loading its self?

12. Why can't the brightness be adjusted in Totem? There is a menu to change it but it does not work.

Feb 7, 2009

I just started using linux (newb) on a dual boot with windows VISTA. I need to disable data prevention execution whenever I do boot Vista through GRUB but I don't know what command to use nor exactly where to put the command. On a single boot windows machine, all you would do is type the following at the command prompt and reboot: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOffAlso, GRUB lists my VISTA boot option simply as "other." Is there a way to change that?

Ubuntu :: Loading Vista From Grub Loader - Black Screen With A Flashing Underscore Character

Jun 29, 2010

I installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

General :: Disallow Closing Last Emacs Window Via Window-Manager Close Button

Jul 8, 2011

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).

I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.

I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.

The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.

As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse

Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?

On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Ubuntu :: Repairing Vista By Booting Vista From A USB Stick

Mar 22, 2011

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).

I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions

I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).

In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.

then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.

But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"

So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.

When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?

My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.

I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.

So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

[url]

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

General :: One Way Channel From Ubuntu To Vista?

Feb 26, 2011

When I'm on Vista (I dual boot by the way) I see that my hard drive is about 13Gb smaller than it used to be, but I have no access to Ubuntu's files. However, when I am on Ubuntu I have access to a drive (is it a drive?) I believe is called OS and when mounted it lets me access all of Vista's documents.

Also I do not understand the difference between /home, OS, and System Files (It might be named something else, but the icon looks like a hard drive I believe).

I realize all this is pretty vague, but do you know a way to block this connection? I feel like Harry Potter looking into Voldemort's mind (lol).

PS Despite the Voldemort reference I am not a MS Windows hater.

General :: Moving From Ubuntu To Vista?

Jan 1, 2010

I run a dell inspiron 1521 laptop, and 2 weeks ago i went from Vista to Ubuntu. What i shoulda done was splitting my hard drive and having them both on my pc. What i ended up doing was taking the whole disc space simply because i absolutly hate windows and loved the general idea of linux where software should b accessible to everyone and free of charge.

Unfortunatly, its been a major headache ever since, spent a week trying to set up my wireless and graph card, and now, 2 weeks into it, my biggest addiction, world of warcraft, is really starting to itch. ive tried to follow guides, im getting errors allong the way, and for now, just dont feel like going through another troubleshooting war with my pc.

My general plan is, getting Vista back, and then installing Ubuntu because i still love it, and use linux for the rest of my general activity.

when i launch the recovery disc, i cant select a hard drive to install it to.
