General :: One Way Channel From Ubuntu To Vista?
Feb 26, 2011
When I'm on Vista (I dual boot by the way) I see that my hard drive is about 13Gb smaller than it used to be, but I have no access to Ubuntu's files. However, when I am on Ubuntu I have access to a drive (is it a drive?) I believe is called OS and when mounted it lets me access all of Vista's documents.
Also I do not understand the difference between /home, OS, and System Files (It might be named something else, but the icon looks like a hard drive I believe).
I realize all this is pretty vague, but do you know a way to block this connection? I feel like Harry Potter looking into Voldemort's mind (lol).
PS Despite the Voldemort reference I am not a MS Windows hater.

PC seems to run fine in single channel mode but monitor reports no input in dual channel mode and memtest86+ lists from 1-3 errors per pass in single channel mode. Motherboard (Gigabyte P43T-ES3G) can't be set for the 1.65 volts required by the RAM (2x2 of OCZ3P1333LV4GK PC3 10666). The mobo voltage choices are 1.6 or 1.7 volts. I have tried both and increased the MCH voltage from 1.1 v to 1.2 v, but so far can't get it to run in dual channel mode at all and single channel mode seems to run fine but I still get errors in memtest86+. Also tried optimized Bios settings and loosened memory timings (from 7-7-7-16 to 8-8-8-27 and tRFC 60 to 70) and reset Command Rate from 0 to 2. CPU is Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz, PSU is rated at 400 watts, Video card is Gigabyte GT220.

I'm trying to crack my wep password just for kicks, but I keep running into the same error. When I try to use airplay-ng for the packet injection, it always gives me the error " wlan0 is on channel -1, but the AP uses channel 6". I've tried setting wlan0 to channel 6 manually, but that doesn't help. I spent a while searching for a solution, but it seemed like each page had a different, usually highly complex solution, that still doesn't work. I have the most recent drivers for my wireless card, and it meets all the requirements. So, is there any solution to this that will actually work?

Thinking about building a new system, with 4GB of DDR3 RAM. I am just wondering, which would you prefer: Dual-channel DDR3 or Quad-channel DDR3? Does one have better speed performance over another? Will one way keep your system cooler?

There used to be a selector where you could set which microphone or line input should be used in KDE 3 (Kmix).
Now, in KDE 4 it is gone and I cannot figure out how to set it. i.e. to change from using an external mic to the internal mic.

I have an old RHEL3 machine that we didn't update before it went end of whatever redhat calls it, and now when I run an up2date -l, it says "This system may not be updated until it is associated with a channel." Is there any way to give it a channel so I can get whatever updates we missed before they turned it off?

I am new here and I have tried checking similar threads as well as other sources in the net but could not get my card working. I use Debian squeeze on a P4 2.4MHz machine with 2 GB ram. lspci can detect all 8 chips but could not load the proper module since it could not identify the vendor. I have tried unloading the SAA7134 module and reloading repeatedly all possible cards from 1 to 174 by "modprobe -i SAA7134 card=#,#,#,#,#,#,#,# #-numbers 1 to 174 one a a time.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.
There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader
[url]
But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I run a dell inspiron 1521 laptop, and 2 weeks ago i went from Vista to Ubuntu. What i shoulda done was splitting my hard drive and having them both on my pc. What i ended up doing was taking the whole disc space simply because i absolutly hate windows and loved the general idea of linux where software should b accessible to everyone and free of charge.
Unfortunatly, its been a major headache ever since, spent a week trying to set up my wireless and graph card, and now, 2 weeks into it, my biggest addiction, world of warcraft, is really starting to itch. ive tried to follow guides, im getting errors allong the way, and for now, just dont feel like going through another troubleshooting war with my pc.
My general plan is, getting Vista back, and then installing Ubuntu because i still love it, and use linux for the rest of my general activity.
when i launch the recovery disc, i cant select a hard drive to install it to.

yesterday i was interested in Ubuntu,so i got the Lice CD and tried it out for a bit, seemed really cool and i decided to install it! So i partition during the installation setup (Yes i defragged on Vista really well before that), and it loaded all the stuffs. So at the Grub screen i chose vista, let it understand the partition changes, and let it finish all of that. Then i went onto Ubuntu, almost to the interesting part,
So i tried to update, that worked, then it said to restart, so i restarted it and it said some line like:
*Shutting down now (not exact) In the white text on the black screen and it just sat there. So i Ctrl+Alt+Del it and it ran the Grub again, i went back into Ubuntu and tried to install my driver for my Graphics card (nVidia GeForce GT 130M w/1gb of vram)and it said it didnt come up with anything. So i decided to get rid of ubuntu cause i didnt know how it worked and because i fugured something was wrong or my computer couldnt function properly, or that i did something... Well anyways, so i go into Vista and knock out Ubuntus Partition.
So i restart Vista so it can recognise the changes in Partitions, and it gives me Grub Error 22! So i put the Live CD in and partition the drive and iand install Ubuntu again after trying to use Acers Recovery Disks that i made when i first got the computer (Thursday, and no they arent vista disks, there Acer Recov Disks) And it seemed to work fine, so im al ok. I workked on vista for awhile getting back my wiped Hdd, and i go to Ubuntu after to work on it.
it wont go into Grub, just boots to Vista, so once again i put in the Live CD and click install, and nitice that Ubuntus P:artition is Corrupted! So i delete the partition from Live CD and reinstal once again. now i did the Graphics card and updates on Ubuntu again and now i have mre errors then ever. Whenever i start up Ubuntu i get six mini screens on the screen and it gives me that line of words when i try and shut down/restart. It also wont let me change the Visual effects. Ubuntu seems like a pain in the butt right now, and unless theres any hopw of sucessfully dual booting then i wanna know how to get it off. I dont understand how linux works at all, and i feel much more comfortable using Vista, although Ubuntu may be cool n all.

HSo basically i'm trying to run the ubuntu live cd from vista and it doesn't boot up when i restart my computer like it says it should. So i tried finding it in the boot list before windows starts and i only find windows there, no CD. I then tried installing the software that comes on the disk to help if the cd won't boot, and that fails when nearly done giving me some "invalid argument" notice..

I've previously used this forum for help with my Netbook, which was brilliant, but now I'm all set to switch my PC overI have a Dell, which I have kept on Windows XP as I did not get on with Vista, or 7. I want to run Linux on it, Ubuntu to start with, but I'm not 100% sure to go about this.My biggest problem is that I've read a lot of confusing advice about running an ipod with Linux. If anyone has any advice or even how-to's that I've missed

I have recently installed ubuntu on a previously vista operated laptop, now i need to eradicate all of vista i care not for it at all, I've read some of the threads here and saw someone say something about ubuntu overwriting everything on my hard drive including vista, is that dangerous, easy, and the most efficient way of doing this. i also tried removing the partition of vista by following a response to a thread, using gparted but now im stuck and i failed horribly (very limited computer knowledge).

Problem: My Email Address is spamming Situation Chronology: 1. I received an email (spam) on Yahoo Mail from someone who was not intending to send it. (While it did go to spam folder, I did 'open' the email (since it came from a trusted sender) but it only contained a link (which because of WOT) I assumed was spam.) I did NOT click the link. 2. I then informed him that his email addy was spamming.3 Shortly thereafter, i noticed in Ubuntu (firefox) whenever I clicked "reply" to email back to someone, there was a quick flash of letters/numbers in the slot where I would normally write. This instantly disappears and goes blank so I can write something, so I just figured it was a bug.

I want to uninstall ubuntu from a dual-boot to vista. I couldn't figure it and I also had to wipe my machine in general so I just reinstalled vista. But when I did that I assumed that ubuntu would get included in my "wiping". But of course...it's still there. Now that odd ubuntu uninstall option which was actually for some strange odd reason in the vista/control panel/uninstall options is no longer available. So how to uninstall ubuntu? Do I just delete i and insert the vista cd to recover the boot? Is that correct?

found one other post with this same issue, and the final reply was "I give up"...I got a fresh 9.1 install. I just want to record some audio, but it's only recording on one channel, the left channel.I tried audacity and sound recorder. checked the sound preferences, Hardware set to Analog Stereo Duplex. In audacity Preferences > Devices > Recording, 2 (Stereo) is selected. When recording in audacity the output meter for the left channel shows activity while the right channel looks like it goes up a little bit but doesn't peak like the left channel. I hear fuzziness in the right but all the sound is in the left

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I cant seem get the sound working properly. I have a checked to make sure that nothing is muted, and I do have sound over the rear channel when I change the wiring on the physical machine. However, I get no sound over the headphone channel. I also changed the conf for pulseaudio to have a default of 2 sound channels. In addition the sound works fine in my Fedora 13 and Win 7 installs, this is a triple boot machine .
