View 2 Repliesi have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC running Vista Home Basic. I installed to run as a dual boot but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. I have tried to run the recovery disk for Vista and it errors out also..
View 6 Replies View RelatedIm currently running windows 7 and im looking for the best way to install fedora 13 and run a dual boot. i am open to other OSes as well mostly thinking of a tri boot with ubuntu but not really sure.
I am downloading the dvd installation version of fedora 13.
I have 110GB of unallocated space to put towards the project my main concern is how i should go about partitioning the space in the best way. (how much space for /boot and swap. what type of partitions should i use and so on)
Second concern would be to make sure i correctly configure grub(i have had trouble with grub recently) i just dont want to run into any issues after the installation.
System: Lenovo R61i, that had Ubunta installed, removed and Vista Home Pre. installed. Plenty of hardware power. Want to install a Knoppix 6.0.1 from an existing CD I have. I want to be able to run both systems on the laptop (dual boot)? I have partitioned the hard drive using vista, so there is now a partition that I believe is Lenovo rescue, the main large C space, and the new partition about 6.4 gb that vista shrank out that is not assigned. When I try to install the Knoppix it just keeps loading in and ends up running live off the CD without installing to the hard drive.
I have stopped the loading sequence in different places, but don't know what to enter or where. I also wanted to install it onto my 64 gb flash drive that has nothing installed but comes up showing that it is fat 32. I have tried to install to the flash drive from the live running Knoppix under install to usb drive, it finds the drive, I select it, and the next window says there is no such file. So, that's my story and I'm stickin to it. All I want to do is get this system onto the laptop or flash so I don't ever have to deal with Microsoft Windows again!
I'm currently using Windows Vista 32-bit on a RAID 1 array; I'm using the RAID provided by my motherboard so it's fakeRAID. Anyway, I'd like to do some C development under Linux but I'm not exactly sure how to go about installing it on a software RAID 1 array without messing up Windows. I'm not sure which Linux distro I'm going to install, so I'm hoping that information isn't important. Would I just resize my Windows partition and put Linux on the newly created partition? Do I have to worry about where Linux will put its bootloader or will it manage that on its own? I didn't mean software RAID, I meant fakeRAID.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow to Transfer 4 versions of Vista and Windows-7 installation DVDs into a flash drive The recent versions of MS Windows of Vista and Windows 7 installers support booting from a USB device so it is possible to transfer the contents of the installation DVD to a flash drive and use it for booting. A USB flash drive however is classified by M$ as a Super floppy that can only have one partition. This means one flash drive can store one MS Windows boot loader.
This tutorial shows how to use Grub, a Linux boot loader, to boot 4 Vista/Windows 7 installation in one flash drive. Technical consideration
(1) I have checked to my satisfaction that none of the MS Windows of Win2k, Xp, Vista and Win7 can mount or see more than one partition in a flash drive. That doesn't mean the user can't have multiple partitions. It is just MS systems have been engineered to mount the first one it recognises and disregards the rest.
(2) MS Windows installers of Vista and Win7 do not like to be booted from a logical partition. As a flash drive with a Msdos partition table can have a maximum 4 primary partitions hence this tutorial describes 4 versions of MS Windows installers of Vista Home-32, Win7 Ultimate-32, Vista Home-64 and Win7 professional-64

I downloaded the current F12 DVD iso on my macbook to install on my Dell 450 Intel Xeon 3.00GHz, but I cant figure out how to verify the download. The Fedoraproject/en/verify does not mention mac, and the command is not working in the mac terminal.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been experiencing problems with downloading the latest version Ubuntu 11 in my current Ubuntu 10.10 operating system.
I used the Update Manager and tried innumerable times but to no avail. It shows that my Internet connection is somewhat faulty. I have no problems with my Internet ironically.
I grudge to download the Live CD into my hard drive and then to manually burn it into a CD because I don't have one available in my hands. Is there any way to download Ubuntu 11 and install it successfully?
Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:
0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:
[Code]....
if there is a way of downloading some extra packages and including some extra repositories that will automatically install during the main installation? With the option of a few settings being saved too... like for those that are used to windows having the gnome menu on the bottom.
I am promoting and convincing a lot of people to try Linux and I always recommend fedora as the OS of choice. I have no interest in creating my own distro, because I love Fedora. I just want to make sure these users can have all the codecs and little extras that makes computing fun without being a geek.My main issue is when I wipe their HDD and install Fedora, I then have to repeat the same tweaks and installs every time. This is my 7th time doing the exact same install and am looking for a quicker way.
I have an old laptop, on which I want to Install kubuntu 6.06.1
So, I downloaded kubuntu-6.06.1-dvd-i386.iso
Unfortunately, for some strange reason the file has been corrupted. Fortunately, the corruption is limited to several bytes.
I know this because I downloaded the torrent and "checked" the file hashes. A total of 5 "pieces" are missing.
Unfortunately, there is no one to seed. None! I am the only guy sharing 99.8%.
share this DVD? I just need to download 5 MB (1 MB for each piece).
I'm downloading 10.4 and I don't know which version I should use. I'm using a laptop so does that qualify as alternate? What is alternate and how is it different from desktop?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Acer Aspire 5745. The installation was successful. However, I found that my internet is not working. Later I realised that there are no ethernet drivers. The one that I need is Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet controller(NDIS 6.20). My wireless is also not working. This one is a Broadcom 802.11n Network adapter. On googling, I found this thread : URL...
To install the driver first, I had to do build-essential and headers-generic. Since I have a desktop, i thought of manually downloading the packages on my desktop and then transferring it to the acer. But i came across many dependencies for build-essential, that is, I first had to install something else before build-essential. The dependencies led me to further dependencies and so on. Is there any way for me to get all the packages without downloading each individual ones?
I have noticed that when installing Jessie, the graphical installer downloads updates to packages while installing if connected via Ethernet to the Internet. Remaining disconnected solves this problem. Is there any way to avoid this and install without downloading files other than apt lists?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing:
Error Downloading Packages:
6:kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386: failure: kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
And even by double-clicking the KDEgames rpm file I'm unable to install it is saying GPG (I'm not sure GPG or not, start with G i think) Key missing so it is taking too much time and not doing anything.
I've downloaded the DVD version of Fedora 12 with a torrent so it shouldn't be corruped - checked the hash anyway and it wasn't - and I burnt it at a low speed and has my burning program verify that it did indeed burn what it was supposed to. I tested the disc for errors and every time it shows up that around the 70% mark that the DVD has an error.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to use my update manager, it freezes when it gets to the point where it's supposed to download. The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. I'm using Ubuntu version 9.10.

I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.
i'm having a problem in downloading the repository indexes.its giving me the following error.""Could not download all repository indexesThe repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu Lucid 32-bit desktop machine. I run "aptitude update" and "aptitude safe-upgrade" manually from the command-line regularly to upgrade my machine. I usually don't pay that much attention to the downloading, but I noticed yesterday that aptitude appeared to be downloading four files simultaneously, rather than the one at a time that I've always seen. Would this be correct? How can I change that? I can't say I've ever noticed it before.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.
There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.
I run ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and I have this problem downloading adobe flash for firefox
