May 5, 2011So I've been trying to install 11.04 on my laptop for a couple days. I tried the USB install a countless amount of times, and I tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 to 11.04, but it never worked. I finally installing it from Windows by the wubi installer, and now it works perfectly.
What I want to do now is remove 10.04, as well as GRUB. GRUB first comes up, and I select my Windows partition. Then I choose Ubuntu to load, and then another GRUB comes up. how do I remove 10.04, as well as make loading Ubuntu more simple?

Jun 7, 2010I'm sorry if this is recurring subject, but I have searched the forum for such a subject and can't find one.I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, I'd like to update my programs to the latest releases, but the available updates in 8.10 versions are not the newest ones. I can't upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu due to some known issues with older Intel drivers.
Is it possible to have the latest updates of packages while I still using 8.10 version?

Mar 14, 2011There are bugs in a program that the newer version is supposed to have fixed but the Ubuntu Repositories only have an older version.
1) Is there a place I can check to see if there is an update planned for the Ubuntu Repositories soon?
2) If I download and install the newer version from the source's website, will this break getting future updates from the Ubuntu Repositories using apt-get or aptitude or synaptic?
3) What else should I think about?

Mar 17, 2011When I turn on my computer, because of frequent updates it will display several versions of Ubuntu 10.10 that I can choose from. I wonder if it is possible to delete some of the older versions and how. I think having several versions of Ubuntu uses up a lot of space in the hard drive.

Jun 3, 2011I installed Ubuntu Server 8.10, 9.04, 10.04, until I discovered that the packages of these versions to upgrade and install graphics settings are not available, then install the current version is 11.04 and there I found that repositories responded and set me right. Then the repositories of previous versions are not available? When I install the current version on all packages that I need to back packs and save it for if I need it later.
How do I get the packages and put together a repository itself if others were dashed this is still operating, and maintenance would be needed?

Jul 28, 2010I need to prevent that the latest kernel update removes the only kernel that still works in my computer. how can i do this? Currently I have 3 linux kernels versions:

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic

But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.

CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5 Home Server Power Consumtion? (features, Kernel Versions Etc.)?
Feb 28, 2010I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

Mar 26, 2011I would love to use ubuntu 5.10 on computer with 1GH CPU, 384 MB RAM and NVIDIA FX5200, It just flyes, the problem is canonical doesn't support this version anymore(I can find latest packages on some remote reps, but these versions although latest for 5.10 are OLD) and it is impossible to use more or less decent software Is the slowdown reason - kernel? And linux distros getting slower? Or is this a reason of Ubuntu developers?

I just wondering what is the difference between RES, SHR, and VIRT.
1) The VIRT always seems to be higher. Is this using the paging file system. (virtual memory on the harddisk, the swap memory)
2) Is the RES memory the actual physical RAM memory?
3) Is shared memory sharing memory with other processes?
4) Just a final question. As I am running on a HP Mini 210, memory and CPU is a resource I don't have a abundence of. So if was to compare for example 2 difference browsers i.e. firefox and midora. What should I brench mark between to 2 to find what one uses less resources?

Mar 20, 2010I am fairly new to Linux and was needing some help on a comparing more than 2 files. I am try to come up with something that would compare at least 10+ different files to a master file and give me an output of what is missing.
Example would be: a.txt, b.txt, c.txt, d.txt compare each of them to the master.txt file, than output the missing text for each file into new file.
I came across comm and diff commands, am I looking in the right place or is there a much easier way of doing this?

General :: RHEL6 - Stop Booting To The GUI
Feb 11, 2011I loaded RHEL6 (first time ever loading it) and it would boot to the cmd line. I changed /etc/inittab to boot to GUI, now it freezes. I want to change it back, but do not know how to stop the boot process so I can get to the cmd line to re-edit inittab. I'm working in VMware vCenter.
