General :: Virtualizing WindowsXP On Fedora 12 For Photoshop?

Apr 20, 2010

I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

Fedora Networking :: Accessing Internet After Adding Fedora To A WindowsXP

Feb 21, 2009

We installed Fedora on top by my WindowsXP, we have updated the connection information with the addresses, but can't access any website. Connection Manager says we're connected. We created a new wired network connection, but it doesn't appear in the choices.

I installed Ubuntu recently and had a similar problem, only mine was that my computer was competing with hers (something to do with DHCP). The solution was to alter my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I also screwed with settings in the "Network Connections" thing, pretty much altering a connection my /etc/network/interfaces file seemed to have made. My problem was only solved as far as I cared. I wonder if this is the same problem.

On the other hand, we attempted connecting the Fedora box directly to a modem and still no internet, so I believe they are entirely unrelated. But I wanted to include this for completeness in case they are.

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Recover Entry After Installation Of WindowsXP In Another Partition?

Jul 26, 2009

After installation of Windows XP in the disk where Linux was installed in another partition the GRUB menu allowing to choose operation system to load dissapeared. This menu previously appeared right after switching the computer on. But after installation of Windows in the partition intended for it only WindowsXP is loaded automatically once I switch on my computer. But switching it on with Linux rescure cd-disk results in loading my ordinary Linux from hard drive. This shows that Linux is not destroyed at the loading of Windows, but just made unreachable. Possibly installation program for Windows has destroyed GRUB or some of its files. Does somebody know how to restore normal functioning of GRUB?

Details:

I am using Scientific Linux 4, which is derivative of RedHat Enterprise Linux.I have currently installed WindowsXP SP3. But previously I had the same problem with SP2 at the same computer and the same partition. At that time I needed to reinstall the full Linux after installation of Windows. This was not a problem, since this was right after its purchase and there was nothing useful. But recently I needed to re-install Windows, now it is SP3. And unfortunately I have received expected result: Windows have been installed, but it made unreachable Linux. Now I need to find a way to solve the problem with fixing access through GRUB to all systems without reinstallation of Linux, since it will be too time consuming to pass all its adjustments and loading which I need.

Probably the problem is typical and well-known. Grub, Linux in one partition and installation or re-installation of WindowsXP in another partition. How to repire GRUB and entries to all systems after that?

Fedora Networking :: Dual Boot 12 Disables WindowsXP Network

Apr 7, 2010

If i boot to fedora and boot back to windows i can no longer can access network/internet on windows! It says the network is disconnected. The cable is connected properly and this message is happening only because i booted to fedora 12 previously before booting into windows.

I did not have this problem with fedora 10, 9. recently i did an upgrade to 12 and this is one of the problems among the many other i am facing. In order to get internet back on windows i have to shutdown the pc and wait for a while and power on again to get network back on windows. the same issues exists on windowsXP64 and vista32.

I am connected to the internet like this pc->Realtek RTL8168D(P)/811D(P)->linksys router connected to pc by network cable --> DSL modem. the router connects to DSL by ppoe

My router's ip is 192.168.0.1. usually if i type this on my browser it will take me to the routers configuration. But a previous boot to fedora and i cant even access my router. its like it says "network disconnected".

why is fedora messing up my network connection? its pathetic that there is no OA in linux and it makes my life miserable.

Software :: Virtualizing Web Server And Connectivity To Internet

May 30, 2011

I have a host on ubuntu and I think I would like to virtualize my web-server. So, to be more clear I have for instance the ip 92.124.74.8 to the main server (where virtualbox will be installed). After I will install the web-server into virtualbox it will have the address 196.168.1.10

So, how can I specify on the main server 92.124.74.8 that all the requests on port 80 to be transfered on 196.168.1.10 (virtual machine). The problem is that on 92.124.74.8 I don't have access to the router/switch. Is there a possibility to make this forward from the main machine 92.124.74.8?

Ubuntu :: WindowsXP Running Slow In VirtualBox

Apr 1, 2011

I have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.

Ubuntu :: Triple Boot/Windows7/WindowsXP ?

Jan 2, 2011

I have been running dual boot Windows XP and Slackware for years but I recently changed things up a bit a "broke" something.

Windows XP is on it's own 250GB HDD. I installed Windows 7 on a seperate 74GB HDD but it appears that it installed the bootloader over top of the Windows XP bootloader on the 250GB HDD. Both OS's booted fine and that point. Then I partitioned the 250GB HDD into 150GB and 100GB leaving me 100GB to install Ubuntu. I told Ubuntu to stick it's bootloader on the 250GB HDD thinking everything would work like magic although there appears to have been a little bit too much magic. Normally Slackware will allow you to manually edit your Lilo config file during installation and add all your OS's but this didn't happen with the Ubuntu install.

After the install there were 5 options in the bootloader menu (at this point I am not even sure what bootloader it was using). Ubuntu, Ubuntu ("safe mode?"), memtest, more memtest, and Windows 7 (bootloader? it wasn't just called windows 7 but something like Windows 7 bootloader, I have only booted once and I am writing this from Ubuntu right now). I tried selecting Windows 7 at that point hoping that it would bring me to the Windows bootloader which would allow me to select from Windows 7 and Windows XP but the screen just went blank for a second or two and then sent me back to the same screen I was just at.

So a quick Google of Ubuntu bootloader led me to believe I was using Grub and I needed to look for the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and edit that but the file wasn't there. Then I tried running grub but I was informed it wasn't even installed. I thought maybe I would have better luck with Lilo but that wasn't installed either. So I installed Lilo and ran liloconfig but I was told that fstab gave a UUID that led Lilo to belive I wasn't using an ordinary block device and I should go fix that and come back afterwards. In fact the only thing in fstab was the ext4 partition with Ubuntu and the swap partition even though I have 4 sata drives installed with 6 separate partitions.

At this point I am pretty lost. Most of my Linux work is done in Parallels now on a Macbook so I haven't had to mess with the bootloader in years and when I did it was all on Slackware which to me is set up quite a bit differently than Ubuntu. I would be pretty sick if I screwed up and took out 3 OS's with it.

How Grub will handle booting both Windows OS's when Windows appears to be doing it with one bootloader.

I have an existing WinXP install on the main drive (/dev/sda) of a Dell laptop. I installed Suse on the second (caddy tray) drive and didn't touch the existing windows partition during install.

After install completed, I found there was no boot loader entry for WinXP during startup. Only SUSE-related stuff. I opened YaST boot loader and tried creating an entry of type "other" and device of "/dev/sda1" and set this as the default entry.

The /boot/grub/menu.lst file now has an entry:

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't Detect WindowsXp After Karmic Install

Feb 15, 2010

I installed Ubuntu9.10 on a USB hard drive attached to my laptop. Laptop has pre-installed XP in the in-built hard-drive. Point to be noted is that my hard-drive is protected via encryption software called Pointsec.

The installation of Ubuntu on the USB hard drive went through fine and I'm able to boot Ubuntu from it.

But now the problem is, GRUB2 fails to detect the Windows XP installation.

Can someone tell me how I can force GRUB2 to boot Windows XP from hd0,0?

The GRUB1 way of configuring /etc/grub/menu.lst does NOT seem to work with GRUB2.

Ubuntu :: Adobe Photoshop CS4 Install?

Sep 15, 2010

I have recently converted to Ubuntu, so I must mention now I am new to Ubuntu. The Ubuntu version I am running is 10.04 I was looking for ways to install Adobe Photoshop CS5, but when I try to run the Setup.exe with WINE, it runs the installing setup, but then after it loads the window closes and it doesn't do anything from that.

Is there any way to fix this at all? As I am starting to miss Photoshop. P.S. I know there is an alternative program such as GIMP, but it takes forever to do something in GIMP which it takes like 1 minute in Photoshop to do. If there is not a fix for this...is there a program that is like Photoshop, but not like GIMP?
