Software :: GIMP Versus Photoshop / ArcSoft PhotoStudio
Aug 22, 2010
As I get my dual Ubuntu / WinXP box running, I learn of software my daughter would like to have under Linux. She uses Photoshop in Windows while I prefer Arc Soft PhotoStudio 5.5. (My needs are very simple.) How close does GIMP compare to Photoshop? To PhotoStudio?
If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code: This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here. gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6 Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module> import gimp, gimpplugin, math ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.
Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.
I successfully migrated most of my daily use tools from vista to fedora, except my video/photo edit tool. Could someone please recommend some tool like photoshop CS and Corel VideoStudio?
I've installed photoshop cs2 on my kubuntu lappy. It loads fine, then I get a error message saying that I need administrator privileges . How do I run Photoshop?
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and get the following error after installing Photoshop CS5 Extended. I uploaded a video of my problem. I have the latest version of Wine installed if that makes a difference. [URL]..
I have recently converted to Ubuntu, so I must mention now I am new to Ubuntu. The Ubuntu version I am running is 10.04 I was looking for ways to install Adobe Photoshop CS5, but when I try to run the Setup.exe with WINE, it runs the installing setup, but then after it loads the window closes and it doesn't do anything from that.
Is there any way to fix this at all? As I am starting to miss Photoshop. P.S. I know there is an alternative program such as GIMP, but it takes forever to do something in GIMP which it takes like 1 minute in Photoshop to do. If there is not a fix for this...is there a program that is like Photoshop, but not like GIMP?
I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?
I did originally have Ubuntu 10.04, in which gave me the same problem. I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10.I have been using the portable Adobe Photoshop CS5 application for a while now however it has kind of broken on me now. Everytime I tun the application now, it gives me a runtime error.
"Runtime Error! Program C:Pro. R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. contact the application's support team for more info" I have tried re-installing several times now. Even downloading a different version. I am also running it through wine through the following command.. "wine "C:Program FilesPhotoshopPortablePhotoshopCS5Portable.exe"
I am currently trying to install adobe photoshop with wine in my computer. I downloaded a torrent copy and everything is working fine with it.. Just one problem... When it starts to initiates the installer, I begin to have problems. The initializer loads fully, but then, when it's done, the initializer goes but it doesn't bring up an installation screen..
I am trying to install photoshop Elements 5.0 in Wine. The Wine instructions say not to install it as root, among a bunch of other things. My System Settings for Removable Devices is set to automatically mount such devices. My /etc/fstab, which I have messed with, looks like this:
I am new to Ubuntu and need help installing the Cybertablet driver and Photoshop Elements 7 on my computer. I don't know how everything works (yet), so if anyone can help, I would need step-by-step instructions...
I installed Wine, and apparently that is supposed to help use Windows programs on a Linux system, but unfortunately I am very blank on how to use it. I would appreciate any help at all! I love Ubuntu except for this one little thing.
Also, is it possible to run a Windows VM on a Linux? Would that let me use my tablet?
I had PS CS5 portable running with Wine and everything was fine. However, from a couple of days ago I click on the icon to open the application and it keep loading. I had attached a screen-shoot with more details. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and Wine (wine-1.3.7).
i managed to install Photoshop over Wine nd it s working like a charm. Installing the Tablet was even more easy, just used Wizardpen (reconized) nd WORKS! But the Pen Pressure aint working, can someone tell me what can i do, because this is the last thing i need for a new life as an Ubuntu user. My tablet is Genius G-Pen M712X nd Ubuntu 11.04.
I am currently using Ubuntu 8.04 and need photoshop for school. I am new to Linux and don't understand much. It is urgent that I get this program installed. I have read something about installing wine but not real instructions
Alright I'm a newbie when it comes to ubuntu, I've been running windows for years currently running win7 64 bit ultimate but, I've had enough of this OS and I would like to switch to ubuntu. I have a couple questions though, Will games work on ubuntu such as Battlefield Bad Company 2 and so on. and Programs like Dream weaver cs4 and photoshop?
I was wondering if it was possible to get photoshop cs4 on ubuntu other then virtually install it on windows or is there an adequate photo editing program for ubuntu
I use Photoshop for photo editing and also for creating custom graphics. I recently switched to Ubuntu... since its free and great at the same time. But in Ubuntu I cannot install any Adobe softwares since it does not support it yet. I heard of a solution..I looked around for solution and how to use it.... but got confused and couldn't understand a work in those tutorials.
I just built a computer with a MSI 760GM-E51 Motherboard, AMD Phenom II 955 CPU and 4 GB memory (2 x 2 GB G.Skill DDR3-1333 PC3-10666) I first installed 10.04 LTS 64bit. But I think I am going to go to 11.04. I am just looking for a vote, would you install 32 or 64 bit. I am not a real power user, biggest thing I would do would be video editing. If I am going to play resource demanding games, I would probably boot into XP.
I just made the switch over from Windows. I have been using Linux distros off & on but never got to learn the power of Linux until my latest college class I took. I decided to turn my back on Microsoft OS as of today! I have no plans on going back anytime soon. I have been a long time digital artist using Photoshop & Illustrator. So my question is how can I get Photoshop onto Ubuntu 9.10 32bit ? I just installed WINE & I have a real CD copy of Adobes Photoshop CS3.
