General :: Virtual Consoles Are Not Coming Up?

Apr 26, 2010

I recently installed RHEL 5.2 on my system. I found that I was not able to show up virtual consoles that we generally do by hitting Ctrl + Alt + F1 through F6.

I installed Red Hat again but the same problem is there. However, I can go into Run Level 3 by

Code:
init 3

but it takes too long to display the prompt. Besides, hitting Ctrl key generates error "unrecognized key" something like that.

Today I installed Virutal Box on Windows XP Host. Then I installed RHEL 5.2. There also I faced the same problem.

However, Virtual Box works fine and I am glad that I can now have only one Host OS on my system and then install as many Guest OSes as I want. Dual Boot System was giving me a heacdache.

Debian Installation :: Virtual Consoles Are No Longer 25x80 On Squeeze?

Jun 12, 2011

On Debian lenny, when I wanted to go from X to a virtual console, I would type (for example) <Ctrl> <Alt> <F1>. Then I got the traditional 25x80 screen, which is wonderful in bad lighting conditions.

On Debian squeeze, virtual consoles are no longer 25x80. They fit way more than 25x80 characters on the screen. They go through the frame buffer, which I guess I must keep that way because otherwise it would ruin X.

But I want my 25x80 back, for those bad lighting conditions.

If I set /etc/default/console-setup to FONTFACE="VGA", at least I get a readable font.

ANd if I set /etc/default/console-setup to SCREEN_WIDTH=80 and SCREEN_HEIGHT=25, they do the obvious, but the characters are just as small, and the data is all in the upper left corner of the screen.

How do I get 25x80 so it fills the screen, as in the days of lenny, without removing /dev/fb0?

General :: XP Crashing In VMware Player With Ubuntu As Physical OS / Fix It?

Nov 16, 2010

it?I have Ubuntu 10.10 (and Ubuntu Server) on a factory Dell Inspiron 530. It's running an Intel Pentium Duo Core CPU (1.6GHz), has 1GB RAM, and VMware Player installed. When I boot XP SP3, it runs, but randomly crashes. I managed to update IE6 to IE8 without crashing, but when I tried to download MS Office 2010 Professional (Trial), it crashed near the end of the download. I got a blue screen with the following:

"STOP: 0x0000000A, 0xB2EEf304, 0x00000002, 0x80508008

It then begins a physical dump of memory, completes, then automatically reboots XP in the virtual machine.

Every time it does this, it shows different memory addresses.

BTW, I also watched performance while doing this. As soon as CPU hit 100%, the download crashed, and soon after, XP crashed, sometimes locking up the physical machine.

General :: Attempting To Get BackTrack 5 Running With A VMware Virtual Machine On Windows 7

Aug 23, 2011

I'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

General :: Automatically Run A Virtual Machine (made By Vmware In Fedora OS) At Startup In Fullscreen?

Sep 11, 2010

I am an administrator of a student lab with 20 PCs. I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.

The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.

update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?

Jun 20, 2011

I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.

I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.

Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

General :: Running Ubuntu 10.04 Inside VMware Player - Windows Vista - Can't Connect To The Internet

Jun 10, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.

I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.

In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.

ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.

OpenSUSE :: How To Get Vmware Player

Jun 25, 2011

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 x86 with KDE 4.6 and kernel version 2.6.37.6-0.5. I'm not advanced linux user, though I'm trying to use it occasionally for getting more experience. Now I want to check which of the virtualization software suits me better, I've already tried VirtualBox and now I want to try VMware. I know that it has a lot of products, but for just home use I guess that I need only player. So, when I try to find it through my default repositories, I just was able to find this vmware-guest-kmp-default . I don't know what is it, so I tried to search through the OpenSUSE Build Service, but there's also no player package. I've already downloaded the source from the official site and yes, I do know how to built binaries from the source, but I know also, that after installing in a such way, it would be difficult for the package manager to track the software, as it's not rpm. So I want to ask you first, if you know any other way, to get the RPM package of the VMware Player from any suse repository.

Resolution The CTRL + ALT combination is used by VMware to direct the keyboard input to the host.
