how do I switch to the text-based virtual terminals when using Fedora under VMware? I believe that normally you use ALT-CTRL-F2 through ALT-CTRL-F6, and F1 switches you back, but the ALT-CTRL is intercepted by VMware to allow you to switch back to the host OS.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot my machine into runlevel 5 (X support) I can't get to any of the virtual terminals. If I do a ps and grep for mingetty I see terminals 4-6 are running. But ctrl-alt-f{4-6} just put me to a blank screen. If I hit alt-f1 I get back to X. I've found that if I start tty2 by running "sudo mingetting tty2" I get the following error in /var/log/messages: mingetty: tty2: no controlling tty: Operation not permitted. I am not using selinux and have noticed that /etc/inittab no longer has the ttys. The reading I have done thus far says it's started by gdm but I don't really see a lot of info about controlling them. Any ideas on this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHas anyone else here had a problem getting virtual terminals to work when booting into F15's 'graphical mode'? This is what used to be runlevel 5 in the old SysV init system, before the switch to systemd. Before F15, I could do a Ctrl-Alt-F[n] (for n=1,...6) to get virtual terminals while in runlevel 5, and this was easy to control by editing /etc/inittab.
But with systemd, /etc/inittab is no longer used, and finding where the virtual terminals get created took me a bit of time. I tracked it down to the /lib/systemd/system/prefdm.service file, which seems to stop creating virtual terminals after tty1 in order to prevent the display manager and plymouth from conflicting on that virtual terminal. I'm using the Slim display manager (installed via yum), and I only got tty1 (showing console messages), tty2 took me back to X, and there were no tty3-6 any more. I noticed from ps that there was some kind of "plymouth --wait" process running, so I killed it. After doing so, the other virtual terminals showed up. Has anyone else here experienced something similar?
It appears that /lib/systemd/system/plymouth-quit.service is not exiting properly, and this is causing the problem. This problem only occurs in graphical mode, not in console mode (what used to be runlevel 3). My first solution was to put "/bin/plymouth quit" in /erc/rc.d/rc.local, and upon rebooting that did indeed fix the problem. But eventually I just removed plymouth altogether, which also fixes the problem. It would be nice though if plymouth-quit.service just worked as it was supposed to. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem.
loaded fedora 10 on my laptop.I get the runlevel 5 in the first one (CTRL+ALT+F5).nothing happens when I press the F2 through F6.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
I found out that I do not have virtual terminals on my computer (Ubuntu 9.10). When I am trying to switch, say, to tty2 with Ctr-Alt-F2, I am getting a black screen with lonely cursor blinking in the upper left corner (no login prompt). my tty2.conf file is

Using 10.04 on my laptop, but I can't access the virtual terminals (ctrl+alt+f1-f6). Instead I get a weird screen with apparently randomly generated lines, as they change each time I attempt to access them. (Sometimes it is just a solid color.) They also appear on shutdown/ switching user. I'm using a VIA VX800 chipset.

I have an HP Compaq nx6125 laptop, which has an AMD Turion 64 2200MHz processor, running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have installed the VMware Workstation 6.5.2 [full] trial and am attempting to install Fedora 11 on a virtual machine.
I understand that the Turion processor is a 64 bit processor, so I downloaded the Fedora 11 x86_64 DVD iso image.
First I have to create a VMware virtual machine (VM) and choose a version for it. If I choose a version that is any of the 64 bit options (for example, "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit", since there are specific options for RHEL but not for Fedora), I get an error message the moment I try to power on the VM and start the install, saying "The buslogic SCSI adapter is not supported for 64-bit guests in this release [...]". Then the VM just shuts down.
I guess this laptop does have a SCSI bus, but my disks are IDE and as far as I can see (System Information) the SCSI bus is not used (?).
On the other hand, if the VM I create is any of the 32-bit option versions, I get what seems to be just a warning, saying that I'm running a 64-bit guest OS (Fedora 11) on a virtual machine configured to run a 32-bit OS, and suggesting I change this to ensure the 64-bit guest OS will function correctly. What would be the risks / downsides of forcing the install anyways?
I will also ask for help on the VMware side, too, and it's not my intention to turn this into a VMware discussion, but I'm just wondering if anybody on the forum has worked with this combination (VMware 6.5.2 and Fedora 11 running within it, preferrable on an HP Compaq 6125 running Windows 7 Ultimate) ? If so, I'd really appreciate some feedback / pointers.

Works fine, except: Virtual Terminals are at the native LVDS resolution 1024x600 meaning that they only use the upper left hand corner of the 1920x1080 monitor. Why? (Or maybe I should say that their resolution is right - the font is correct, not huge - but the VT is limited to 1024x600.)
Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.

What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.

I am using 9.10 and my ability to "ctrl + alt F-dey" to a ttys shell no longer is available after running an update. 10.04 has the same bug. Getty is installed and I can not figure out what happened.
How do I get ttys back?
When I installed 10.04 in April, I started having all sorts of problems with my Virtual Terminals (CTRL-ALT-F*). First they were inaccessible completely, then they were there, but not visible, i.e. I could use them to login and run commands, but there was no screen output, then they were gone again, and the fight just went on and on. I just recently got this functionality back after months just messing around, testing different peoples solutions, and really just not being afraid to break the whole thing. Ultimately, it boiled down to nVidea graphics driver problems.
However, now I notice that outside of gdm, the screen is not aligned properly. It seems to be about 2 characters to the left and several lines lower than it should be on VT1-VT6, while gnome is aligned perfectly. I can use my screens auto-adjust to fix the problem, but when I switch to another terminal, the problem comes back. It's not really a huge deal, but after all this trouble, I really just want them to work the way they are supposed to work. Does anyone know of a way to set the screen alignment via software, or am I just stuck dealing with it?

ctrl+alt+f1-f6 just returns with a blank screen.
ctrl+alt+f7 returns to gdm session
ctrl+alt+f8-f12 also yield no information.
I'm building a Debian Live system, [URL], and I've pared it down to a very light distro. It is using the IceWM, has the basic linux commands, and very very little else.
When I run "top" and "ps aux", I see that I have multiple terminals and logins waiting to be used. It's a small amount, but I'd like to make that RAM usable elsewhere. The indicated commands are: "/bin/login -f" and "-bash", and I have one of each associated with each tty[1-7]. I may want to keep tty1 and tty2, just in case, but I can't imagine wanting 3-7.
So, what I'm looking for is a way to stop tty[3-7] from even starting in the first place.
I saw on one forum the suggestion of modifying the /etc/init/tty[1-7].conf files, but these files aren't present, I presume because it's a "Live" system.
I am an administrator of a student lab with 20 PCs. I was thinking of a way to protect those machines in the long run with the presence of some students with destructive behaviour. The most suitable solution to install a Linux OS and use virtual machines to load Microsoft OS. This way once the OS fails I can simply replace the VM with a clone that was previously made.
The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.
update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince a few weeks I cannot open a console in vmware server 2.0.2 anymore. I don't know exactly when this started because I use vmware only occasionally (I have only 1 program (an old Ashlar DrawingBoard) which does not run properly in wine). VMware server and the console have been working before without problems, but now I get the message "Cannot connect virtual machine console." and it times out. This is on Opensuse 11.1 with VMware Server on the same pc, Firefox and the guest is Windows2000.
I have tried to disable all extensions in firefox 3.6, disabled the firewall, even created a new user (on the same pc) with a clean firefox, all without any result. However when I connect from a different computer which runs Internet Explorer under windowsXP, then I can get the console without problem.
So, somewhere there is something wrong between Firefox and VMware server.

I am able to create a new Virtual Machine, but when I go to power on the VM in order to install the OS (windows server 2003), either the host crashes/reboots (with "Run in Debugging Mode" turned on) or the VM simply does not start (with that Debugging box unchecked) and in the log there is an error along the lines of VMware Server unrecoverable error (vmx)

I'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.

I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
