General :: Reduce Fedora's Disk Size In VMware Player?
Jan 3, 2011
I'm new to Fedora 14, vmware player. After getting Fedora up and running in VMware player. The disk size was 2.7 GB. After three hours of working with it, the disk size has bloated to 4.3 GB. I havent added software to account for the near doubling in size. How do I reduce the size back to 2.7GB range or lower. Im new to Fedora and superuser controls. Im removing more software than adding software. Is this a VMWARE problem or Fedora problem?
I have a rack of four 1TB drives all partitioned identically with three primary partitions. On each drive
- the first partition is only 64MB; - the second is a large 900GB partition and - the last holds all the remaining space
mdadm has been used to set up /dev/md0 - RAID1, comprised of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 /dev/md1 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdc2, /dev/sdd2 /dev/md2 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdc3, /dev/sdd3
OK, so it was a silly mistake to make - but I am now need to increase the size of /dev/md0. My thinking is to reduce the size of md1 so that I can grow md0.
On md1 I have two logical volumes. I've successfully reduced the size of the volume so that I can reduce the size of md1. Now I'm at the nervous stage; I can find little written on the topic of shrinking RAID5 arrays - and even if I do this I'm unsure if I can move partitions around to regain the space I so desire.
I'm all new to linux. I've got Fedora core 12 - I'm ex windows user. I have these 3 websites to maintain: These are in finnish language. So called pikalaina sites: pikalainat pikavipit vipit
And I have to add pictures to these pages. I don't know how to do even that I don't know web programming or HTML. But my images are about 1 mb in file size - I use to have windows and photoshop and there is this save for web feature where file size is reduced.I have this GIMP -program now - it's terrible compared to photoshop, but it's free. In GIMP there is no feature how to reduce file size for ex. 1mb to 20 Kb. How do I do this? Do you know any good program to do it?
I saw Gnome version 3 in gnome website. It is looking nice. Can i get that in F14? What is the version of Gnome in F14? How to reduce the desktop icon size in F14?
My laptop has 2Gb of ram, 4Gb of swap, 40Gb hdd and an intel pentium 1.40GHz cpu, even when compiling stuff or maxing out everything the 4Gb of swap is never touched, with such a small hdd I'd like to reduce the swap to about 2Gb (just in case) to free up some space, does anyone know what commands/tools are available to accomplish this?
I have copied some vides from my camcorder and the size seems a bit excessive - 140mb for 3 mins! Is there a program I can use to save the .mp2 file as .mpg and reduce the size?
I have a HDD that has 2 partitions. the 2nd partition is the VG and I want to reduce its size. I have reduced the Largest LV in the VG and now have free space in the VG. But, I am clueless on how to proceed to reduce the partiton size so that I can use it for another need.
When done, I expect to have 3 parttions total on the HDD. But first, I could some help in understanding the steps necessary for me to take, to move the free space out of the partition that has the Volume Group. Then, i can use fdisk on that 3rd partition for my needs.
I already know how to expand a Volume group by adding PVs, but, I do NOT know and cannot find how to reduce it to recover the free space in the VG to be used in a new partiton. (Better explained..."I want to reduce the physical partition size that the VG represents.)
my question is according to google search I need to umount the filesystem point in order to reduce its size.... so it means I will require that nobody uses the system? since /var logs a lot information?
I also have the option to reduce /root but I think is more complicated.
so what are the precautions in order to reduce /var/?
The icons in the applications pane are very big, I need to scroll multiple times inorder to reach the last program. How to reduce the icon size, so that all the installed programs can be visualized without to much scrolling?
The system never uses more than about 250GB of HDD at any one time, so I would like to remove /dev/sdd1 and /dev/sdc1 from the LV and then from the machine and leave /dev/sda and /dev/sdb alone.
Does anyone know that if I use the command "system-config-lvm" to reduce the total LVM size to say 580GB, whether all data is preserved (I don't have any way at this stage to backup up 250GB of data, unless I buy more HDDs and that is the whole point of this exercise anyway - remove the two terrabyte drives to be used as backup disks).
Once I am happy that the data is safe, I will use "pvmove" and "vgreduce" to remove both terrabyte drives.
I have a home directory which is mounted on the LVM partition,How can i reduce the size of LVM partiotion without loosing the data on home directory...whenever i use lvreduce command it show me a warning mesg that the whole data will be lost...reducing the size of LVM partition without loosing my home directory data.
Since installing Fedora 14, I have found that everytime I run Vmware player it goes through the compile sequence. It works fine after that. It should only compile if the kernel has changed. Anyone else with this problem? Any ideas what is wrong?
I made 272 Photos from one book. Total size was 920MB. I used than gscan2pdf to create pdf document, and reduced there quality size. Result 116 MB. Than i converted it to grayscale [URL] with:

I was cloned an entire disk (with one NTFS partition of 70GB, only 15GB used) using ddrescue with the following command...
Code: ddrescue --no-split /dev/sda /media/usb250/ntfs.img /media/usb250/ntfs.log The img file it's around 70GB. Now I want to restore it to another computer with 30GB of space. How can I reduce the size of img file?
Code: #./VMware-Player-3.1.2-301548.i386.bundle It got installed successfully, but while running it said gcc not found. so i installed gcc by Code: #yum install gcc
the default icons on the gnome desktop are quite big in size.. how to reduce default icon size ?also I want to know if there's a similar tool like msconfig to manage start-up programs in Ubuntu?
I'm new to Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I love it. I'm using it for web dev with a LAMP and Rails installed. Everything is peachy.I would much prefer the icons in the launcher to be a lot smaller though, anyone have any idea how to scale them down? I reckon about 75% the size they are now would be about perfect.
i have /var mounted on /dev/sda4 which consists of 38 GB i want to get 8 GB from /dev/sda4 as this partion will remain of 30 GB.how can i get 8GB in such a way that my OS will not hurt.
When ever I am trying to install Fedora12x86_64 in VMware Player 3.1.0 I am having a strange error. Please see the attachment and reply. I am running Fedora12x86_64 in my laptop and VMplayer 3.1.0 is installed in it.
The other day I installed VMware Player on the system when the Kernel was 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64. On running VMware player after installing the kernel-headers and gcc files the program ran fine (I did not try to install the VMware Tools). I also have not loaded the guess OS as yet.
toady I did and update in which the kernel was updated. I checked to ensure the Kernel-headers were also updated for the latest kernel.
After rebooting the machine the running kernel was then 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64. I then tried to start VMware Player. It indicated because the kernel was changed it needed to install new kernel modules, OK, It open the module screen and then crashed.
The log says it can not compile Vmmon which is the first module. it does not go any further.
Tried to installed a new copy of VMware Player over the old one but this only resulted in the same error messages.
I want to run ubuntu and centOS on vmware player.I have ubuntu9.10 already installed on my system.which version of vmware player should i install to make it work.
I installed Debian 8 Jessie with full disk encryption and chose to have everything on the same partition. After install, I notice that my 8GB laptop has a 16GB swap. Is there a way to reduce the swap to 8GB (or maybe 4) whilst not affecting the encryption?
I have a 1TB HDD so space is not an issue but I dislike such waste. The setup used LVM.
