Fedora :: Disable The Extra Virtual Consoles?

Apr 4, 2010

I googled on how to disable the extra virtual consoles... I don't need 6 of them and decide to cut it down to 3 There was no luck with Google so I did this my own and seemed to have done the job...

Code:
rm /etc/event.d/tty4 tty5 tty6
This worked fine, but is there anything else I need to do with

Fedora :: Missing Virtual Consoles After Upgrading Packages?

Apr 4, 2010

I installed 64-bit Fedora 12, and everything was working fine. I upgraded a bunch of packages (including, but not limited to, X and Gnome) via yum, and now I'm unable to access virtual consoles. X works fine, but Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc. leads me to a black screen.

How do I get my virtual consoles back?

General :: Virtual Consoles Are Not Coming Up?

Apr 26, 2010

I recently installed RHEL 5.2 on my system. I found that I was not able to show up virtual consoles that we generally do by hitting Ctrl + Alt + F1 through F6.

I installed Red Hat again but the same problem is there. However, I can go into Run Level 3 by

Code:
init 3

but it takes too long to display the prompt. Besides, hitting Ctrl key generates error "unrecognized key" something like that.

Today I installed Virutal Box on Windows XP Host. Then I installed RHEL 5.2. There also I faced the same problem.

However, Virtual Box works fine and I am glad that I can now have only one Host OS on my system and then install as many Guest OSes as I want. Dual Boot System was giving me a heacdache.

Debian Installation :: Virtual Consoles Are No Longer 25x80 On Squeeze?

Jun 12, 2011

On Debian lenny, when I wanted to go from X to a virtual console, I would type (for example) <Ctrl> <Alt> <F1>. Then I got the traditional 25x80 screen, which is wonderful in bad lighting conditions.

On Debian squeeze, virtual consoles are no longer 25x80. They fit way more than 25x80 characters on the screen. They go through the frame buffer, which I guess I must keep that way because otherwise it would ruin X.

But I want my 25x80 back, for those bad lighting conditions.

If I set /etc/default/console-setup to FONTFACE="VGA", at least I get a readable font.

ANd if I set /etc/default/console-setup to SCREEN_WIDTH=80 and SCREEN_HEIGHT=25, they do the obvious, but the characters are just as small, and the data is all in the upper left corner of the screen.

How do I get 25x80 so it fills the screen, as in the days of lenny, without removing /dev/fb0?

my question is that is there any gcc/g++ compiler switch which can disable checking extra ISO confirmations and stick to our older ISO standards.

in addition to this how we can figure out what ISO standards are supported by which gcc/g++ versions

OpenSUSE :: What Exactly Is The Extra Repository /repositories/KDE:/Extra

Jul 18, 2010

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

Fedora :: F12 Extra Long Power Off

Nov 18, 2009

I installed F12 KDE from the live cd and now when I Shutdown or Reboot, it takes 2 minutes and 8 seconds for the machine to power off. Yes, I timed it. Happens everytime like that. Even when booting from both "mainstream" live cd and the KDE spin live cd. When I hit the Shutdown or Reboot, it goes through the daemons/services shutdown the flashes up the Halting System or Please wait while the system reboots messages (respectivley), turns off the LCD and then just... sits with the power light on and hard drive activity light on. I should mention this is on a Toshiba Laptop about a year old. Intel Chipsets. (Satellite Pro S300M-S2142 if anyone is really curious).

The hard drive light stays on for about 1:03 minutes and then it turns off, at 2:08 minutes - the Power light finally turns off and the thing finally shuts down. I've tried adding acpi=off, but that just gets me a kernel panic on startup and acpi=debug all I seem to notice is "Malformed early option 'acpi'" in messages and dmesg. How consistant the power off time is makes me think there's a timeout of sorts going on, but I have no idea on how to track that down.

Fedora :: Extra Large Fonts In F11 While Running KDE

Jun 13, 2009

Yesterday I upgraded my desktop Hp dx2280 which I use at office and HP Compaq Presario 300 Widescreen laptop which I use at home from fedora 10 to Fedora 11. Upgradation was just fine without any errors in both cases. My desktop machine works just fine and I, hardcore KDE lover, am enjoying working. It is just amazing. But sadly my Presario C300 laptop is a mess for KDE. Login is fine And I got the desktop. First I ran xmms and pleased to hear my favourite mp3 song on it. Sound quality -- EXCELLENT.

But for any other application, whether it is Firefox, openoffice word, kwrite, even the Konsole which I love desperately presents me a screen with extra extra large fonts showing only menus like File Edit & so on. I can not see even fourth menu and no scrollbar etc. Even the clipboard gives me the same result. i.e. extra large fonts. While everything is perfect with GNOME, which I am using now. I am not getting what is the problem. Previously I had upgraded my Presario C300 laptop from KDE 4.1.x from Fedora 11 to KDE 4.2.1 from repo of kdetesting. Is that making some conflicts?

Fedora Installation :: Way Of Downloading Some Extra Packages

Jul 13, 2010

if there is a way of downloading some extra packages and including some extra repositories that will automatically install during the main installation? With the option of a few settings being saved too... like for those that are used to windows having the gnome menu on the bottom.

I am promoting and convincing a lot of people to try Linux and I always recommend fedora as the OS of choice. I have no interest in creating my own distro, because I love Fedora. I just want to make sure these users can have all the codecs and little extras that makes computing fun without being a geek.My main issue is when I wipe their HDD and install Fedora, I then have to repeat the same tweaks and installs every time. This is my 7th time doing the exact same install and am looking for a quicker way.

Fedora :: F12 DMRAID Jmicron Missing Library And Extra Spaces?

Dec 2, 2009

things "seem" to work, first time I've really ever used dmraid (usually mdraid), but I'm worried about this error

dmraid -ay
RAID set "jmicron_STORAGE2 " was activated

The dynamic shared library "libdmraid-events-jmicron.so" could not be loaded:

libdmraid-events-jmicron.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Two things, why no matter what I name the RAID in the jmicron bios is puts a bagillion spaces after it, and second, I cannot find the missing lib anywhere I've installed all the dmraid* packages.

Fedora :: Extra Menu For Grub Version Choice During Startup?

Apr 11, 2011

I recently installed Fedora 14 on an old Dell server (Pentium 4). It works fine, except that it somehow includes an extra startup step, in which I have to choose between two different grub versions. Here is the screen I get:

GNU GRUB version 0.97
Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)
Fedora (2.6.35.6-45.fc14. i686)

Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting, 'a' to modify the kernal arguments before booting, or 'c' for a command-line. I always select "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" because I presume it is the latest version. Is there anything I can do to automate the choice of "Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14. i686)" and avoid this extra step? On another subject, I have already modified the custom.conf file to eliminate the login screen step.

Fedora Hardware :: FC14 Detects Extra Thermal Diode

May 8, 2011

I am looking for the best place to report this issue. FC14 appears to falsely detect some hardware as a Thermal diode and causes random shut down due to thermal over temperature condition. I am in the process of building a new MythTV back end and choose the EliteGroup motherboard A790GXM-AD3. I did a fresh FC14 install usewd the update depositary during the install. On the first boot the system shut down before I could get the password entered. Eventually I noticed the following in the /var/log/dmesg file. May 6 09:20:52 pvr1 kernel: [ 71.081080] Critical temperature reached (127 C), shutting down. I installed the lm_sensors RPM and I see the following:

[root@pvr1 ~]# uptime
08:29:07 up 0 min, 1 user, load average: 1.45, 0.45, 0.16
[root@pvr1 ~]# service lm_sensors status
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +30.0C (crit = +110.0C)
k10temp-pci-00c3
[Code]........

I did log a call with the ECS mother board support to get their view on this issue. But based on the BIOS PC Health display temp3 should not exist. So perhaps the kernel is detecting some other hardware as a thermal diode? Random shut downs due to ghost hardware is not good. The kernel version is 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.x86_64

I tried to boot a FC15 beta live CD but it shut down due to the over temp condition before it completed booting. A google search of the error message got two hits one in FC12 and the other in Ubunuto linux both with ECS motherboards.

General :: Ubuntu - Using Multiple Consoles + Vim

Jul 12, 2010

I am gradually getting used to the CLI for Ubuntu. I am used to switching between windows when editing a file, going to the command line to run a cmd, and then back again etc.

I feel severly restricted by the CLI, as it seems I can only do one thing at a time. Surely, there must be a way where I can 'switch between' several command line consoles?

Also, I am using vim, and I sometimes need access the command line. At the moment, I have to quit vim to get to the CLI, and then start vim again. This is not very productive.

How to switch between CLI screens/consoles and also how to switch to the CLI from withinin vim and then back to vim again without having to close vim?

My distro is Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS)
