linux 5.4(RHEL) and window machine are pinging nicely.able to access window on linux but not linux at window(xp)? xinetd is running on linux as well as telnet service is also running on xp.

I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes.The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one.There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:
-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it
-> set up a DNS server for the local domain
-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email
For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense?How can one fix it so that a DNS under Suse is accessible from Windows?
when I try to access the shares from a Win98 laptop. The server name shows up in the Network Neighborhood (freaking childish names!) but when I double-click it, Win98 keeps asking me for the password for the \SHOPIPC$ connection. I have deleted the .pwl file on the Win98 and logged in using the same user/pass combination as I do on the Linux. On the Linux, I ran 'smbpasswd -a derek' and supplied my password.Windows XP sees the server just fine, but Windows 98 just does not want to play nice. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this without breaking the connection to the XP box or the Linux laptop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had some issues with Wubi installations of Ubuntu, so I figured out how to create a LiveCD and to install from the CD. I am working on Linux now and I am having no issues as far as the Penguin goes. I hash-checked the iso and used older CDs more suited for booting.I chose to install from the CD, and I selected the option which partitions and installs Linux alongside Windows. I was prompted to import some user folders from my Windows Vista, and I agreed. These appeared in Linux and also work fine.
However, after a few hours of messing with my new Linux, I restarted and I realized all I have in my boot menu now are some Linux options, memory test, and a Vista loader & vista recovery. I had intended to have a dual boot system. Did I delete my Windows without meaning to, or can I change the bootloading process somehow to include both Linux and Vista?
Upon selecting the Vista Loader, I was asked if I wanted to recover my files, etc. I refrained because I wasn't sure what the effect would be on Linux. Is there a way to have both Vista and Linux show up normally in my boot menu, or will I have to go back and forth recovering every time I chose to use the other OS?The only reason I still want to use Windows occasionally is because I had Maple software in Windows which was useful for school.
I am able to telnet localhost 143 and telnet ip 143 on localhost.but from outside network am not able to telnet ip 143.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to network a Ubuntu 10.04 laptop (192.168.0.11) with a VistaHome 64 desktop (192.168.0.10). I have full access to files from Ubuntu either connecting through Network or by Connect to Server. From Vista I can see linux-laptop under the network.I am trying to share /home/john/movies, /home/john/pictures, and /home/john/music. When I open linux-laptop I can see my shares. However when I try to access a folder lets say movies which is actually located at /home/john/movies I get the error "windows can not access \linux-laptopmovies". This stands true all shares. I think the path is defined incorrectly somewhere. To test this theory I created a file called john2 at root and shared it. I placed a nondescript .txt file in there. When I opened linux-laptop from Vista I saw among the other shares john2. When I tried to open that it allowed me and I was able to see the text file. I believe I have an incorrectly set path for shares somewhere on Ubuntu. I'm not sure if Im using samba or nfs or both. I can post smb.conf if needed.Also, sometimes Vista ask for a password. I have only 2 users on both machines with identical usernames and passwords both with admin access. Sometimes I get not allowed access error or i get users can not access more than one share at a time error.

I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".
I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.
I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help

Ensured no firewall
Started Remote Registry Editing service
Shared a network drive (to enable file sharing?)
Created a user 'shutdown' specifically for shutting down
Added 'shutdown' to Administrators group
Added 'shutdown' to the list of allowed shutdown users in gpedit.msc

I am unable to ssh a Linux box from other Linux boxes; also tried to window putty.Although I am getting the password prompt instantaneously.So far, by comparing logs of other server, I am just able figure out that "debug2: callback start" is not coming in ssh -vvv logs.

I know i have to remove the linux partitions and Grub and reinstall windows but i dont have a windows CD because my computer just has a recovery partition and i dont see how i could boot it without Grub.

I downloaded the latest version of it and installed it onto a brand new machine in my office. Is there a website out there that I can use as a guide for all of the Linux commands. I know that if I wanted to I could just learn my way around the gui, but I want to REALLY learn Linux. I also want to be able to telnet into the machine so that I can access it remotely. How can I set that up? I installed Fedora with all of the default settings and didn't change anything.

What I have noticed is that browsing of that archive with gnome is much slower with ubuntu than winXP ( dual boot , same PC ) where it is almost instant.I have disabled assistive technologies and installed Thunar file browser. It improved things but again the lag is important. Linux is in general much faster than windows, so I wonder why is it happening ?
