View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a server at home running as a file server and DHCP connected to a switch with a wireless AP in there as-well. with this setup I can access the files and do some configurations via SSH on the actual server anytime I'm able to get the wireless signal, now lately I felt the need to be able to do the same but this time over the internet. I've read somewhere already that I'm gonna need a router with port forwarding and NAT, then know the IP address of the server but my problem is once you start talking about routers then you need broadband connection which is something I don't have. Getting a router is not much of a problem but without ADSL like connection I guess its useless, what do I need to do?

Just for reference, my desktop and server are both running Ubuntu 10.04, with their respective Desktop and Server distributions.
I can remotely connect with SSH to my server, but I can't edit files (or at least the files I am trying to edit) remotely. I can connect remotely and edit them with VIM, but I would like to be able to use SciTE to modify the files. I am specifically trying to edit files under the /var/www directory, as well as the /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file.
I have an SSH server set up on CentOS 5.5 which I can succesfully use to access my file system remotely.
On this machine, I also have a partition with XP installed on it. Is there a way I can set up the SSH server so that I can remotely access the files on the XP partition?
I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.
I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.
I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).
I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.
I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`
And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser,password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.

I am running F11 and I am using cable broadband and a Linksys router.I have been able to get ssh working with OpenSSH while I am at home but I don't really need or want to ssh remotely, I would rather setup what I think is called an ftp. Our company servers run Windows XP, and we have successfully installed remote desktops on other laptops running Windows.I thought of running the remote desktop from a Virtual Machine Windows session, but it seems a cumbersome way to do it.
I have a fresh fedora 13 install, I managed to browse and setup my phpadmin.....and browse everthing locally. I can not browse the web site from any other machine in my network. All my machines get their IPs from my dhcp (192.168.1.0).I googled and read a thread in this forum, I understood it might be due to SELINUX. I disabled it, rebooted, still have the same behavior, browse my apache locally but not from other machines. I did a telnet from one of my machines using the IP as followstelnet 192.168.1.11 80got the following onnecting To 192.168.1.11...Could not open connection to the host, on port 80: Connect failed.I checked error-log and access_log file, found no hint. I think it should be something related to some fedora systemor firewall or selinux config that is not allowing access to it.

So far I have officially setup the VPN and everything. It logs in. It gives me the little lock symbol above the Network Manger icon. I'm connected!
But...
How do I actually access the darn files available via the VPN? We keep most files on a single server for the company. Internally, it looks something like "//Bob/Folder/". At the office I have the shortcut set to the "folder" portion of the above since that's where things are located.
I'm not seeing anything related to the VPN in Nautilus, under Network... squat. I've tried several methods of using the "Places > Connect to Server" function while setting it to "Windows Share" as well. Honestly, I'm unsure if this is appropriate nor what to put in the fields (Server, Share, Folder, User Name, Domain Name) if this is the right place to be.
I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes.The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one.There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:
-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it
-> set up a DNS server for the local domain
-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email
For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense?How can one fix it so that a DNS under Suse is accessible from Windows?
I have noticed a really bad problem on here that i never had on windows 7 even with overclocking.
It seems the fans stay on and are basically idling or are at minimum speed and the computer and graphics cores are just idling at 99c which is really dangerous, but not critical yet since this is an alienware laptop and the technician did say its temperature rating is above that.
The problem is I need to get the multiple fans in the case to start up and cranking like they do to keep the system really cool in windows 7. I kinda wanna get this fixed ASAP as i dont want to constantly be running at this temperature.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI suspect that this has come up numerous times, but I am new to Linux and I am setting up a new in-house server using Ubuntu 9.04 and Apache, etc. I can see the welcoming "It Works!" message when I log in via Firefox. I can see "index.html" when I FTP the server with the site name and password at /var/www. I can also see the -rw-r-r-- attributes, but I can't edit the HTML file or replace it. When I try to rename the "index.html" file.
I get the following message: "Request denied. Verify that the file or folder exists and that you have the necessary permissions on the server to perform the requested operation."
I haven't been able to determine where to enter the password or what changes I need to make to be able to work with the /var/www directory via FTP.

when I try to access the shares from a Win98 laptop. The server name shows up in the Network Neighborhood (freaking childish names!) but when I double-click it, Win98 keeps asking me for the password for the \SHOPIPC$ connection. I have deleted the .pwl file on the Win98 and logged in using the same user/pass combination as I do on the Linux. On the Linux, I ran 'smbpasswd -a derek' and supplied my password.Windows XP sees the server just fine, but Windows 98 just does not want to play nice. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this without breaking the connection to the XP box or the Linux laptop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had some issues with Wubi installations of Ubuntu, so I figured out how to create a LiveCD and to install from the CD. I am working on Linux now and I am having no issues as far as the Penguin goes. I hash-checked the iso and used older CDs more suited for booting.I chose to install from the CD, and I selected the option which partitions and installs Linux alongside Windows. I was prompted to import some user folders from my Windows Vista, and I agreed. These appeared in Linux and also work fine.
However, after a few hours of messing with my new Linux, I restarted and I realized all I have in my boot menu now are some Linux options, memory test, and a Vista loader & vista recovery. I had intended to have a dual boot system. Did I delete my Windows without meaning to, or can I change the bootloading process somehow to include both Linux and Vista?
Upon selecting the Vista Loader, I was asked if I wanted to recover my files, etc. I refrained because I wasn't sure what the effect would be on Linux. Is there a way to have both Vista and Linux show up normally in my boot menu, or will I have to go back and forth recovering every time I chose to use the other OS?The only reason I still want to use Windows occasionally is because I had Maple software in Windows which was useful for school.
