I am using Debian Lenny with LXDE. For some reason, I would like to use some software which is developed under KDE, such as Kile. But the fonts are not so good (screenshot here).

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity and Gnome classic. Later I install Gnome 3 and Gnome shell with instruction from Ubuntu Geek. All the download seem fine but after the installation everything turn ugly from Unity to Gnome classic. The shutdown command is missing from the menu and the network show disconnected which is actually connected. I attached a screen shot. Is there anyway to make it better?

I have this computer I actively use. Sys-admin forbids us from using third party repos. Compiling from source is allowed if a copy of the source sent to him. He made it clear he won't help unless system is fubar.Because I choosed fedora, I ended up with only pc in whole room which cannot play music and video. I have root access so;I got lame from sourceforge and gstreamer ugly 0.10.16 from freedesktop.I did '.configure','make' and 'make install' on lame and gstreamer. I wasn't able to read the whole stream of text flowed by make and make install, but other than few "defined but not used" errors I didn't seen any big errors.I tried play mp3 with totem but it failed. I tried extract the post and pre install scripts from gstreamer-plugins-bad-0.10.22-1.fc15.i686.rpm fo rpmfusion to learn what else needed to done after/before install, but post and pre scripts were empty. Do I have to do something else to get it to work?

I am simply fed up of using OpenOffice word processor. It's formatting and bullets and numbering system is a total chaos. Even when manually typing the numbers the OpenOffice word processor tries to be clever and "detects" that I'm trying to bullet my points and then mangle all the formatting again.Microsoft word was much better, I've been using it for many years and never faced such a silly problem. I think I'll switch back to windows just because of MS Word -- it had more features, looked better and nesting paragraphs is easy.

I just installed Ubuntu on my new computer, after previously installing it on my laptop, and it worked flawlessly, except now that it's up and running, I realized that gnome is really screwed up. The panels and buttons are ugly, and all the applets on the panels are duplicated after I log in.

I just upgraded my system from F14 to F15 and everything else is working quite well, but the monospace fonts in Evolution's mail windows are really ugly. Changing the fonts in Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> General seems to have no effect on Evolution at all. Is anyone else having the same problem? Should I file a bug? Here's a screenshot of gedit and Evolution. In gedit, I've checked "Use the system fixed width font (Monospace)" and in Evolution I've checked "Use the same fonts as other applications". Still, the fonts in Evolution are different than in gedit and much uglier.

I have installed Netbeans IDE on my Netbook and on my PC (openSUSE 11.4 32 bit and openSUSE 11.4 64 bit). On both has the UI a ugly font. I don't really know how to change it. I already searched the web but I couldn't find anything related. Have a look how it looks like:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us. And then the "original": [URL]. OK, this picture is already 3 years old but I don't think that Oracle would change Netbeans UI font to look creepy. How I can change it to normal?

I tried to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4. Installation went fine except for one message. Do not know the message, but wrote down the path of the file: /etc/kernel/header-postinst.d/dkmsAfter installing had to restart and now the computer hangs on at an ugly kubuntu splash screen (looks like purple 16 colors)Starting the failsafe start there is a error message 'no screen found'I got the feeling it has to do something with my nvidia card, but not sure. So I tried looking for an answer, but finding something meanwhile you do not know what your looking for is difficult. Somebody has some suggestions? If additional information is needed just le me know.running 64 bitAMD 3500+gigabyte m57 sli s4nvidia 7200xp is still working from other hard disk*edit* added some details

It's also very unprecise. Anyway, I've some X.org settings, but nothing has worked yet. Has anyone had similar case? Videocard is ati 5700 if in correct ,but I think problem was before installing ati drivers (when running Xorg with vesa driver )

I use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.

I just did a reinstall because I migrated to a new box, and I can't figure out what it was I did to fix the ugly ugly fonts Java apps display. I've switched to jre from openjdk, which was a minor improvement, however I recall seeing much better fonts in my java apps about an hour ago before I switched systems.

I'm using Fedora 13beta and KDE on x86_64 arch.
gtk 32-bit apps (eg: acroread, skype) have ugly fonts in their menus.
gtk 64-bit apps look great (and similar to qt apps).
The following packages are already installed:
gtk2-2.20.0-1.fc13.i686
gtk2-engines-2.20.0-1.fc13.i686
qtcurve-gtk2-1.3.0-1.fc13.i686

This happens to me with any browser (tested: Firefox, Chrome and Opera) and DE (tested; Gnome, KDE, LXDE). While for the most part, the text is OK, some text looks quite messed up (please look at the attachment for an example).
By inspecting the affected pages, I fond that usually (maybe ever?) when the characters are garbled, the font is Tahoma.
Then I tested with The Gimp and its text tool: I choosed Tahoma and I tried to type something inside an image. Same issue. It seems to happens when the font size is 14 px or >= 17 px.

I'm using an Nvidia Geforce 6x card (can't remember the exact number). When I do not have the proprietary driver enabled, the Ubuntu logo and status bar, as well as various boot up messages, look very nice. They are scaled properly and I'm impressed with how they look. When I do enable the proprietary driver, the screen resolution during boot up is much smaller, and therefore everything looks ugly. The little status bar under the Ubuntu logo suddenly fills up and "freezes." The transition from login screen to desktop is jerky.
Unfortunately if I disable my card, I cannot use desktop effects or even view flash videos in full screen mode. (I'm assuming nouveau still has work to do.) Is there any way I can have proprietary drivers enabled and a nice boot up experience?

I've tried the 'current' proprietary Nvidia drivers in the repository and also the newest from Nvidias home page. Both of them gives me, regardless of what theme I choose, ugly windows. The only things that are shown correct according to the theme is the minimise, maximise, close buttons (correct colour and form). Everything else is grey and ugly. I have successfully activated 'Normal' visual effects, so composite/opengl seems to work. The only window that is according to the theme is System/Preferences/Appearance!?

It's weird, but when I activate proprietary drivers my Ubuntu splash screen from gorgeous to ugly. For instance without the drivers my splash screen shows Ubuntu and the loading dots into amazing HD quality. However when the drivers are activated the quality becomes ugly, and text start appearing saying loading pulse audio, and other stuff. How can I make it gorgeous again?

When I execute Eclipse or Firefox remotely using ssh (on a LAN using ssh -Y user@remote-machine eclipse) they both look strange, the colors are kind of yellow. Logging in to the remote machine using NX or VNC and executing the same apps does not produce the same colors, the apps look fine. Executing the same apps on my local machine does not produce the strange colors either. The remote machine is a SLES 11 and the local is a openSUSE 11.3 (with KDE 4.5.2).This might seem like a small problem but it is annoying to work a whole day like this when the remote apps looks like **** on my otherwise beautiful KDE desktop

My home desktop computer upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 without any problems. However, after all was said and done, the boot up and shut down screens look like crap. They are all in terminal text, and without any graphics. I have attached pictures of what they look like. This can't be right. Is there a way I can set the system to use the proper graphics when booting up and shutting down? I like my computer to be pretty.
This is what it does for most of the boot process:
boot1.jpg
It does this just before the screen where I enter my password.

This is how it looks when it shuts down:
