I am using Debian Lenny with LXDE. For some reason, I would like to use some software which is developed under KDE, such as Kile. But the fonts are not so good (screenshot here).
View 3 RepliesI use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my system from F14 to F15 and everything else is working quite well, but the monospace fonts in Evolution's mail windows are really ugly. Changing the fonts in Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> General seems to have no effect on Evolution at all. Is anyone else having the same problem? Should I file a bug? Here's a screenshot of gedit and Evolution. In gedit, I've checked "Use the system fixed width font (Monospace)" and in Evolution I've checked "Use the same fonts as other applications". Still, the fonts in Evolution are different than in gedit and much uglier.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Netbeans IDE on my Netbook and on my PC (openSUSE 11.4 32 bit and openSUSE 11.4 64 bit). On both has the UI a ugly font. I don't really know how to change it. I already searched the web but I couldn't find anything related. Have a look how it looks like:

I just did a reinstall because I migrated to a new box, and I can't figure out what it was I did to fix the ugly ugly fonts Java apps display. I've switched to jre from openjdk, which was a minor improvement, however I recall seeing much better fonts in my java apps about an hour ago before I switched systems.

gtk 32-bit apps (eg: acroread, skype) have ugly fonts in their menus.
gtk 64-bit apps look great (and similar to qt apps).
The following packages are already installed:

I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?
What is the best commercial C++ compiler on Linux. Best in the sense of runtime performance.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI built a shared library for some API functions (C files) and compiled them with gcc. Now I'm writing a c++ application (compiling with g++) and want to link my C API shared library and be able to use it from my application. Is this possible? At first instance, it's not quite working for me. I was able to link my shared lib just fine with a C application but got an "undefined reference to `apiFunction()'" error when attempting to do it with g++. Just want to see if anyone has any insight on this subject and make sure this mix is even is allowed.

i was wondering if there is away to avoid application from closing if a specific library not found? for example: if my application uses libPng and it wasn't found on the system running my app (binary and not source), is there anyway to just disable the part that uses png from my application?

Basically I am looking for something like a web based FTP client that runs on the file server (I use the term loosely) I have. Basically I want to be able to open a web browser on a different computer in my internal network, punch in hostnameort and get a web page that I can use to move files between the computer.
I don't care if it uses FTP or not. I basically just want the specific functionality. I have vsftp installed on my 'server' already.I have looked at Gollem, but I am unsure if that is the correct application for me to use. If you have used it any opinions would be great.I know this is probably not the most secure way to do things, but it is only for my internal network and kind of an experiment for me. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows-only language lab program ('Logolab') which provides students with listen and repeat exercises on audio and video material loaded by the teacher. It operates in conjuction with a Firebird database which stores subtitles (I think) and the sequencing data (the lengths of each segment) for recording (a recorded piece will be subdivided into small audio/video segments during which the student repeats what's been said).The audio and video functions are run internally by Windows Media Player, and the video input must be in .WMV format for the system to function.Using Wine, I've managed to install the language lab program on Ubuntu, as well as the Firebird database program. However, each time I start the language lab program, I get the message "Firebird database not started!".There is a BIN folder with the language lab software that contains a .INI file with the following contents:
Perhaps that needs to be modified for Linux or Wine on Linux? I've tried changing the DataBase field with the Linux path to the appropriate .FDB file, and likewise the ServerName field to the Ubuntu computer name or the ip address, but to no avail. Lately, I've installed the Linux version of Firebird and Flame Robin (which I couldn't understand).If anyone can provide any help or suggestions, I'd be most grateful (it's the only thing preventing me from migrating 100% to Linux).

Issue: I want to backup my system and be able to restore if/when my system crashes.
Setup: Thinkpad T61 running Sidux KDE3.
I want to back up the system files more than personal data. What I have found is that when I apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade performs without error, but when I restart and login I get a black screen with a mouse. From the 'black screen' I can open yakuake with F12 and then launch applications and such from the command line. The point of this more troubleshooting right now. Later is so I won't need to do a complete reinstall.
What backup prog have you used that will backup the complete system and is easy to restore?
I have been using Sandboxing for Windows Operating System and wanted to know if there is a sandbox for debian based distros ? I have tried sanbox mentioned in Debian wiki. Are there any other sandboxes ?

I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a tool or tutorial to build a distro based on mint/ubuntu/debian?Git, scripts, and tools, small compilations for branding are OK. Compiling kernel, x11, gnome, compiz, etc. is BAD unless really required. Specifically, I'm looking for a way to have some applications installed by default, change logos/about boxes, change theme, configure what compiz options are, and add firmware drivers (connect to the Internet to download wireless adapter driver? <- headache, gotta find a lan cable now ...), and still have the liveCD install method. I'd like it to be based on linux mint, but I only want a few tools from it (update manager, software manager, flash, media codecs), so it's ok if it's ubuntu/debian with those mint tools added back in.
I saw some options, too complex, and others too simple. Not looking for a "learning experience" like LFS which gives me a horrible linux build if I don't do something exactly right. Nor any of those tools which are just package pickers and don't do enough. suse studio looked about right(maybe tad too easy), but was RPM based, not deb based.

I've tried recompiling the libpng 1.4.2 package with the ln -sf libpng.so.3 libpng.so.0 uncommented from the Slackbuild script, and recompiled gd, and still haven't had any success.
I just did an update on my Debian system and it was very long. I'd like to know now, after the upgrades have already been applied, which packages were upgraded and which were not.
