recently i setup new LAMP server , after some days faced a strange problem? suddenly the server load goes to 100 or 80 but there is no wearied process running? the normal lod is between 0.5 to 1.5? the server have 2 hdd on hardware raid 0

Brand new to Linux. Sort of got thrown in front of the bus if you know what I mean. The company I work for has a Linux server running CentOS 5.4 Company uses Linux for their Email, FTP and Web Server. Have been here a few years dabbling in and out of Linux and now that the old Admin has left the company.....I need to learn it ASAP. The server has run pretty solid until today.
The email server runs SendMail and SpamAssasin. Received lots of complaints today regarding extra SPAM. Noticed that SpamAssassin was not running. Tried to restart it through the WebMin tools and got the following error: Starting spamd: child process [3956] exited or timed out without signaling production of a PID file: exit 255 at /usr/bin/spamd line 2588.
I have a CentOS5 box here (actually running the latest release of EasyIDS). Everything was working fine for about half an hour, and now I can't access the box through a web browser on it's IP address. I can't ping the box either. If I log on to the server, I can ping other boxes on the network and external resources, but nothing seems to be able to see it. I checked to make sure HTTPD is running, and it is. The firewall is not running (or at least that's what it says when I do service --status-all).

When I try "shutdown -c", the system prompts "shutdown: cannot find pid of running shutdown."
Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

My first atempt is to restart the NFS, but locked files persist because I can kill the lockd pid process, even using root account , I suppose this is because it's a kernel process. Here is the message error I get when restarting NFS matrix kernel: lockd_down: lockd failed to exit, clearing pid
We had servers that worked fine for years. After updated them to the latest version of CentOS (5.2 with latest updates), they keeps on hanging when being scanned by PCI Verdors (a Credit Card security standard). Basically, the scan causes httpd process to eat up all memory, and the server becomes unresponsive. Normal operations resume after the scan stops for 5, 10 minutes. Is set up a postfix, dovecot + clamav server as described in the wiki. I also use the freshclam update script in /etc/cron.daily/freshclam. But my problem is i get this error message every day:

how the bash script should look to copy huge directory with multiple sub-folders to a new place place while checking load and stopping for several seconds if load reached lets say 3 or 4 ? I am using web gui interface with minor file editing, but I prefer done it with GUI. Currently running Centos 5.6 x86_64.
I have a VM setup in VirtualBox of Win XP. This VM has been setup for well over 4 years.
All of a sudden today, the VM started running very slow. I checked the task manager in Windows, nothing eating up PCU or memory there. I then ran htop. Attached is what I saw. There are many repeat processes with different PIDs.
Is this normal?
I am using KVM and created four guest Operating systems on it.The server host is Ubuntu 10.04.I am using 4 websites in a reverse proxy environment.One of our website is running on CentOS VM.Right now there is no traffic on the website static HTML pages.I do not have any clue as why it was taking longer time to be accessed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOur CentOS 5.5 server has an intermittent problem where kswapd0 begins using 100% CPU, driving the system load to 20-30 and higher, and eventually crashes the server. The problem seems to be triggered by an intensive Java process (Lucene indexing), but only once every month or two. Lucene reindexing normally runs every 15 minutes without a problem. When the problem happens, there is still plenty of free RAM (as measured by /usr/bin/free's "buffers/cache" value, which is 1.5GB) and free swap space. The server is running MediaWiki 1.15 with the standard CentOS Apache, PHP, MySQL. My intuition is that this is a kernel/swapper bug.

My internal drive is read/writing continuously without stopping no matter what I am doing. It begins immediately after boot. It simply runs and runs nonstop. This is with NO APPLICATIONS running. This is a problem which cropped up suddenly after 5 months of running just fine. What I have tried:
1. Disconnecting Internet - no change
2. Looking at processes in System Monitor. Well, everything says "sleeping" and there isn't anything that looks obvious to me, but there are a LOT of processes. I am afraid my drive will simply burn up.
I'm trying to get php-fpm running to use with nginx. I usually just use spawn-fcgi, but I would like to try php-fpm this time. I was hoping that it would be as easy as yum install php-fpm, but alas, that is not so. how to get php-fpm working on CentOS?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a CentOS 5.5 system that I am able to run fully virtualized 32-bit VM's on just fine, but I have need to run some 64-bit VM's on it. It has a "paravirtualized" option that might possibly work, but it wants a network install path, and I am not sure if this is the actual solution. When I go to create the VM I only have i686 and xen for options on the virtualized method, is there a way to add (I am presuming) amd64 in here somehow? The CPU is definitely 64-bit. My google-fu hasn't found results for me yet.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having a strange problem configuring Piranha to load balance (Direct route) 2 ports across 2 w2k3 servers in a test environment. What is strange is that 1 of the ports are working fine but the other port doesn't work. I've read many how-to and after many frustrating hours I disabled the firewall, iptables and arptables services and one of the ports are load balanced across the 2 real servers. Here's the environment.

I can telnet from the client to the realserves on both ports and it's works. When I telnet to the VIP only one port gets through and the other gives me "could not open connection to host port 32777 : connect failed. The configuration in Piranha for one port is the same as the other. I can't help but think that some other configuration for port 32777 was missed.
If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.
