This is probably a newbie problem, so forgive me, but when I do this:chmod o+rw /dev/nst0It resets back to what it was upon reboot. How do I get this change to stick?I tried searching the forums and Google, but I haven't found an answer.

The original theme Human changes to i think dust. when i open the appearance applet to change back the theme, the original human theme is already selected. So i have to select some other theme and then i select human theme, then the theme changes.Also the order of my taskbar icons changes and also the icons themselves.

Is this there anything I can do to get settings/changes I make to stay?

my rounter causes puppy to write an improper dns entry in resolv.conf. Consequently I have to manually write it, then I have to place a command on it to make sure it doesn't get rewritten on boot, or after a couple of hours use. I had this problem with xubuntu as well.

I solved this problem in ubuntu by using the chattr command.

Puppy won't let me do this. When I use the chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf, it gives me this error. chattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device while reading flags on /etc/resolv.conf I tried chmod 444 but it had no effect on reboot. resolv.conf was rewritten again. How can I make sure this file does not get rewritten. Why won't chattr work?
I work in a shared computing environment and the default setting is r-x for group and others; it's upto the users to change this. I can chmod and change the permissions for all the files. However any new files created all have the default permissions. Is there anyway to change that so that I don't have to chmod everytime or run chmod as a cronjob?

I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.
View 4 Replies View Relatedafter the 5.6 update I started loosing the connection to my router. Having had issues with routers before I assumed that the router was on its way out. However I happended to have a laptop handy the other day and thought I would give it a try (after eth0 went down), router was fine(same cable too). I have tried bringing eth0 up/down (gui and ifdown/ifup) and restarted the network(gui and cli) but it will not get an ip(as I recall it does recognize that the cable is connected). If I do a reboot, eth0 comes up immediately. The log just shows repeated dhcp requests. I tried a dhclient -r but it errors out with no link found. It has been doing this since 5.6 came out (roughly once a day) so I THINK that it is not a hardware issue(should have died completely by now if it was). PSU voltages show stable and unchanged. It does use the forcedeath driver. 5.6-64bit fully updated.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation with english-only language but with a German keyboard.
So, once booted into my (only) account, I use the Keyboard Preferences app to change my Layout from US to German. Which works. I also remove the US keyboard so that the only layout left is German.
But upon a reboot, not only the US kbd is back in the layouts list, but the kbd also has defaulted back to US, so that I have to open the Kbd Prefs to again remove the US layout to get my German layout active again.
I also tried "Apply System-wide" and even logged in as root to make the same changes, but the system always goes back to US layout after a reboot.
This is also a problem when logging in after a reboot - I want the system to use German layout there, too.
So, how do I change the layout globally so that even at the login page I have my German layout already active?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Sysinfo 0.7, unfortunately I set 'Section to start in' to System. As some of you probably already know, and I didn't, is that there's a bug in Sysinfo, that crashes the app, when System is selected[URL]... What this means, is that I can't run Sysinfo anymore, because it crashes on startup. Starting it as superuser works, but since I use Gnome Do, I would like to launch it w/o having to go through the terminal.
What I've tried: Did a complete removal from Synaptics, thinking this would delete settings as well. It didn't. Ran locate sysinfo from terminal, looking for a settings file. no luck

I recently installed the new 11.04 release and was messing around with the Compiz settings on Ubuntu Classic. I tried logging on to regular Ubuntu and everything crashed. When I start up there is no log in screen, only text shows. (I enter my log in information then type 'startx' in the terminal to show my desktop.)
The desktop shows a messed up version of my custom configuration with Cairo-Dock all weird and everything in the wrong place. Also my custom start-up screen that I installed is distorted, and the GRUB screen shows up in purple.
If there was a way to reset Ubuntu 11.04 to the default settings? I tried typing 'unity --reset' in the terminal but it gets stuck at the line 'Setting Update "fullscreen_visual_bell"'.
Dual boot system. Boot Linux Fedora 13 and the hardware clock is set to GMT. Boot Windows 7, time is wrong, as it expects the hardware clock to be set to the local time. reset the hardware clock each time I reboot in to the other O/S.

I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. View 9 Replies View RelatedSince a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.
On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.
After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.
Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.
I have squeeze and need a bash script running with root privileges from xfce desktop to delete all PCI devices from /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and start dhclient on eth0 or eth1.

After searching through forums, I could finally fix it.I'm not sure what exactly fixed it. I first changed the window manager to metacity. However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.
