View 2 RepliesI' m using Mandriva 08 and windows 7 on my system. When i login to linux and try to copy data from linux drive to win drive or vice versa then it shows........
[root@lenovo mnt]# cp /home/simer/Desktop/*.avi win_e/

I have a linux box that I plan to use primarily as a server. I also have another machine that dual boots Windows/Linux.I would like to have a way to backup my filehe Windows/Linux box onto the Linux server. In other words, I am assuming the hardrive on the Windows/Linux box could fail at any time and I want to have a backup of important files.Should I set up an ftp server to do this? Are there any security issues that I need to be concerned about if the files contain sensitive information etc?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two somewhat older computers, an HP laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and a custom desktop running Debian Lenny. They are not networked, and I do not have home internet access since I recently moved to an area where broadband is not available and I have a winmodem. I am trying to upgrade the system on the laptop, but have run into a strange problem. I have downloaded a copy of the Xubuntu Karmic Koala iso from a public wifi spot onto the laptop. The laptop does not have a CD burner, so I am attempting to transfer the image to the desktop computer via a usb device. The problem is that it will not transfer accurately. The md5sum of the iso is fine on the laptop hard drive and also after I have copied it to the usb device. I unmount the usb device from the laptop, connect it to the desktop, and copy the file to the desktop hard drive, from where I hope to burn the CD. I check the md5sum and it doesn't match. What is even stranger is that if I now check the md5sum of the iso file on the usb drive, that has also changed. The size of the file in bytes remains the same, but when I ignored the md5sum and tried to burn the CD anyway, it would not run, so something is wrong. I have tried this dozens of times with a compact flash card formatted fat16, a thumb drive formatted fat32, and another thumb drive that I reformatted ext2, all with the same result. The md5sums are always different, but always wrong. What I would like to know is, do I have defective hardware, or is something else going on? I have never had a problem transferring other, smaller files in this manner. How else can I get this iso file onto my desktop computer?

I want to transfer an arbitrarily large file (say >20GB) between 2 servers. I have several considerations:
Must use port 22 (ssh) because of firewall restrictions
Cannot tax the CPU (production server)
Memory efficiency
Would prefer a checksum check but that could be done manually
Time is not of the essence
Server A and Server B are on the same private network (sharing a switch) and data security is not a concern, Server A and Server B are not on the same network and transfer will be via the public internet so data security is a concern, My first thought was using nice on an scp command with a non-CPU-intensive cypher (blowfish?). But I thought I'll refer to the SU community for recommendations.

If I disable the repo-non-oss repository the update works fine. The URL I have for the repo-non-oss repository is:
Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss
This has been going on for over a week. Do I need to use a different URL for the non-oss repository? I live in New York, United States.
I'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.
I have searched the board and I did see some other questions but I don't think they will help in this instance so I have started one. I hope I can get my photos back and also hope to hear from someone soon.
I wasn't paying proper attention when adding a repo to yast and need to find the file were the info is saved to delete this. The problem is that whenever i use yast it comes up with an error code saying that it can't find the data for the 'problem' repo. Have tried zypper rm but that comes up with a similar error advising that the data is in a format that was not expected. My thinking is to track the file were the yast repo source details are saved, delete this and then just add the repos that i use back.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis post concerns info found at [URL]. My question is: How do I get the patch. The author makes ref. to "his" git repo and the patch for TOR. I guess the patch allows the use of some compile time options that can harden the build. I looked through the change log of TOR and couldn't see any of the options referenced by Jacob in his post. I have read on the net that compile time hardening options are part of the gnu compiler, not the application to be compiled. Is this true?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.
Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?
I just changed repos back to a standard CentOS base repo due to the custom one I was using needing https, and due to a proxy issue, only have http. When I run yum update, it finds that the path for the mirrors is off slightly giving me 404 errors.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting subversion working on Centos 4.7. When I try to create a repository using:
Code:
svnadmin create /path/to/repo
I get:
Code:
svn: Berkeley DB error while creating environment for filesystem repo/db: Invalid argument
svn: bdb: Berkeley DB library configured to support only DB_PRIVATE environments
I've searched the Net, with little luck. Threads seem to suggest that Centos has this flag compiled into the Berkeley DB RPM by default; whereas SVN doesn't want it. Someone, somewhere, must have got this to work and I'm sure it's something really simple I'm doing wrong.

I have two different Linux operating systems (on two separate partitions) on my laptop. One is open SUSE and the second is PCLinuxOS and I frequently have to update files and folders from one to the other (the consequences of trying to keep both current!). When I am using openSUSE and want to access folders/files on the other OS, openSUSE asks for SU authorisation to access the other . . ./home file. Until recently, I could open ALL of the folders on the (other) /home file but now I can open some folders but not others. The Dolphin screen shows a warning at the bottom that "Could not enter folder /media...... " ! I can then only access the folder by going into the menu and using the 'File manager -Super User' mode ..AGAIN.
I suspect this action is necessary because I have had to previously open these specific folders in 'Root mode' to be able to 'paste' the moved file! I would like to avoid this (double) 'messy' action - how to change/avoid this My system is a 32bit openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.0 and the 2nd OS is also KDE 4.6
I guess I'll be asking the impossible... Is it possible to EASILY move my Ubuntu set up from one disk (smallish) to a bigger one, so that I can install Win7 as well on that bigger disk drive? I am not too keen on reinstalling ubuntu because then I will lose all those other ubuntu programs that I have installed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a 30 GB SSD and I need to install Ubuntu on it. I currently have a 1500 GB harddrive, on it my current 60gb ubuntu partition and the rest is Windows 7.Out of the 60 GB for ubuntu I have used 9 GB, so I want to transfer that 9GB to the SSD to preserve all my settings. Then I want to format the original 60GB to something else, probably NTFS since both linux and windows can read it.I tried sbackup but that creates a back up on my current drive, not what I intended. If there is a gui program that will work that would be great, if not I'll still give whatever suggested a shot.
