View 1 RepliesI am having trouble transferring music to my i-pod from my desktop that runs with Linux.
View 1 RepliesI copied all my music to my pen drive, and when I go to copy it onto windows it doesn't work. Is this something to do with the way Linux saves it or something.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOK I have a problem, well I think it's just ubuntu because this has done this in 9.04 and 10.04 and still in 10.10. When I go to drag and drop the music files from iPhone to my music folder, the files transfer, but they don't transfer with the name of the song. They get transferred with a name of 4 digits like this "BVFG.MP3" (example).
I am not going to go through all 1,200 of my songs and rename them one by one that's ridiculous.
Here's a screen shot. That is actually More by Usher, but it doesn't say Usher obviously.
My rhythm box crashes every time i play a song or try to transfer music to my ipod. It usually will play one song but then it crashes. Everything was working fine last night, then today it stopped working right.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Walkman NWZ-S545. I have Rhythmbox 0.12.8. I have a System 76 amd64 computer. I have run Ubuntu (now 10.1) for a couple of years and before that Linspire and haven't had MS Windows for years.
What I want is to be able to simply transfer music files from my computer to the Walkman. Nothing fancy. Drag and drop is fine. (I was hoping that it would be shown on the desktop, that I could open it and access it and drag files to it.)
I looked in Ubuntu help and found: "Ubuntu will work with most portable audio players, including iPods. Normally, all you have to do is plug the player into your computer and then use Rhythmbox to copy songs to and from the player."
When Rhythmbox didn't recognize it and no icon appeared on my computer screen indicating it was plugged in as an external device, I went back to Ubuntu help and found and installed the mtpfs and mtp-tools packages and made sure that the MTV plugin in Rhythmbox was checked. Now Rhythmbox could see the Walkman BUT could not play any songs! And there was no Walkman icon on the desktop.
When I tried to play the 5 sample songs on the Walkman, I got one of these 3 errors:
a. Couldn't start playback - no file name specified for reading
b. No URI set
c. Unable to copy file from MTP device: PTP Layer error 02ff: LIBMTP_Get_Filemetadata(): call to ptp_mtp_getobjectpropssupported() failed.
(BTW, my Rhythmbox setting under preferences - music is for .ogg - can see other options under edit but cannot switch to them. My mp3 songs transferred from my external hard drive to Ryhthmbox beautifully and play just fine)
After further searching, I read I should confirm that libmtp8 was installed and I found that it was.
So I went to Ubuntu Rhythmbox help and read: "If Rhythmbox Music Player does not detect your device as a portable audio player, you can create an empty file named .is_audio_player at the top level hierarchy of the filesystem of your player."
OK - I am stuck here at several levels:
1) Is this what really needs done?
2) If so, how? (I searched ".is_audio_player" and came up with several comments and how-tos, all seeming to involve going into the root directory and inserting an empty file somewhere. First of all, I can't get into my root directory even as the administrator with full privileges! Secondly, I know enough to know that even if I could - I shouldn't!
A while ago, my iPod Touch was on the 3.1.3 firmware and when I would drag songs onto it from within Rhythmbox it worked perfectly. The filenames would be changed to follow Apple's weird naming conventions, and they would appear in the music library on my iPod. Then, I updated to 4.2.1 and I could no longer mount the iPod (this was a known issue, and someone made a fix, but I didn't bother with it) so I wasn't able to connect to it and transfer any more songs through Rhythmbox. Recently I noticed that I can now mount the iPod again and browse it in Rhythmbox (it must've been fixed in an update). However, I can't (successfully) transfer songs to it.
When I drag songs onto the iPod, Rhythmbox displays the "transferring __ songs" status, and they get added to the iPod's list of songs shown in Rhythmbox. However, they aren't visible in the iPod's actual music library. And when I reconnect the iPod to browse the music on my iPod in Rhythmbox, the newly transferred songs are no longer there. But the space left on my iPod has definitely decreased. So I went into my iPod's iTunes_Control/Music folder and noticed that all the songs I transferred are actually there in the F## folders, but they didn't get renamed to follow Apple's naming scheme (so instead of being named something like LNXQ.mp3 they just retain whatever the old filename was). So does anyone know what's going on? Rhythmbox definitely used to be able to transfer the songs in the "correct" way which ends with their filenames being changed and the songs being added to the iPod's music library. Why isn't this happening correctly anymore? Is there anything I can do to fix this?
1-When entering a music CD, video or files, any programs or music or video players and desktop are closed are removed all the icons and I can not open any program only on firefox, I can not see the files or anything . (NOTE CD-rom is in mint condition)
2-I graphics effects ruin the entire desktop and when it is in fact no graphic still looks bad everything looks pixelated or striped like when flex is damaged or something is damaged and is in perfect condition.
Now I'm going with the version 10.04 of ubuntu:
1-I have the same problem with the CD I had in 9.10, except that in the 10/04 I can open some programs with the Emphaty and monitor systems.
2-When you close the laptop when I open the screen looks as if the flex embers damaged or broken screen (when it is of course) and I have no other to reset it.
3-When you drive about 30 minutes using computed with any open programs (Firefox, Emphaty, emesene, movie player, Gnome player) to close it or minimize it gets super slow and sometimes if I Friza and then to turn it off and repeat history.
4-When I'm watching a movie or a video with movie player is super slow (just what I'm playing does not the OS) as if Lageado and stuff. But with Gnome looks pretty good player just the video looks very small and I can not put it full screen. Certainly in a Dell Latitude C610 Pentium III-Processor: 1000/700mhz-Memory: 512MB Graphics-Card: 16mb.
sometimes when transferring large files using scp between my desktop running maverick and other servers running Ubuntu, Debian or CentOS, I get the following error message: 77% 258MB 11.3MB/s 00:06 ETAReceived disconnect from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: 2: Packet corruptI've found a seemingly related bug report on launchpad here: but the provided "ethtool" fix did not help. I'd be most grateful for any ideas on how to solve this issue. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out.So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I have several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer, and I've taken a screenshot to show my problems: Screenshot-8.jpg.Does anyone here know what I could/ should do to resolve this issue? my soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I have two somewhat older computers, an HP laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and a custom desktop running Debian Lenny. They are not networked, and I do not have home internet access since I recently moved to an area where broadband is not available and I have a winmodem. I am trying to upgrade the system on the laptop, but have run into a strange problem. I have downloaded a copy of the Xubuntu Karmic Koala iso from a public wifi spot onto the laptop. The laptop does not have a CD burner, so I am attempting to transfer the image to the desktop computer via a usb device. The problem is that it will not transfer accurately. The md5sum of the iso is fine on the laptop hard drive and also after I have copied it to the usb device. I unmount the usb device from the laptop, connect it to the desktop, and copy the file to the desktop hard drive, from where I hope to burn the CD. I check the md5sum and it doesn't match. What is even stranger is that if I now check the md5sum of the iso file on the usb drive, that has also changed. The size of the file in bytes remains the same, but when I ignored the md5sum and tried to burn the CD anyway, it would not run, so something is wrong. I have tried this dozens of times with a compact flash card formatted fat16, a thumb drive formatted fat32, and another thumb drive that I reformatted ext2, all with the same result. The md5sums are always different, but always wrong. What I would like to know is, do I have defective hardware, or is something else going on? I have never had a problem transferring other, smaller files in this manner. How else can I get this iso file onto my desktop computer?

I have a linux box that I plan to use primarily as a server. I also have another machine that dual boots Windows/Linux.I would like to have a way to backup my filehe Windows/Linux box onto the Linux server. In other words, I am assuming the hardrive on the Windows/Linux box could fail at any time and I want to have a backup of important files.Should I set up an ftp server to do this? Are there any security issues that I need to be concerned about if the files contain sensitive information etc?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to transfer an arbitrarily large file (say >20GB) between 2 servers. I have several considerations:
Must use port 22 (ssh) because of firewall restrictions
Cannot tax the CPU (production server)
Memory efficiency
Would prefer a checksum check but that could be done manually
Time is not of the essence
Server A and Server B are on the same private network (sharing a switch) and data security is not a concern, Server A and Server B are not on the same network and transfer will be via the public internet so data security is a concern, My first thought was using nice on an scp command with a non-CPU-intensive cypher (blowfish?). But I thought I'll refer to the SU community for recommendations.
My wife has taken over the desktop (ubuntu 14.04 LTS). I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.
Is it possible to force Thunar (in xfce4) to use all lowercase for the special directories it manages: Desktop, Trash, and "File System"?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.
I have searched the board and I did see some other questions but I don't think they will help in this instance so I have started one. I hope I can get my photos back and also hope to hear from someone soon.
I am trying to configure mpd (music player daemon) to access my music files that are stored on a windows server (NAS).
In the mpd configuration file I have to point to the directory in which the music is.
How do I do that? Is it something to do with mount?
I have no sound after upgrading to 11.04. Sound control panel and test speakers emits no sound. The new music player won't play sounds from music CDs either.

I can't seek music cause i can't find that little circular on music track bar. I update fedora but there was not any good news for rythmbox
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use mt-daapd music server to stream music to a couple of network music players (which use UPnP protocols). Recently (last month or so) I have found that on restarting my ubuntu system I need to manually restart the avahi-daemon in order for the music players to be able to 'see' the music server. I think avahi-damon is running when ubuntu first starts up. The output of a ps aux shows:

I'd like to understand why I need to restart the avahi-daemon and either solve this or learn a way to automate restarting it on system boot up so I don't have to do it manually each time. My system is ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and the version of avahi-daemon is 0.6.25
I've searched upon numerous links for a "fix" but they are either for older releases of fedora, or, I was able to make appropriate changes to the F12 KDE4 release such as the F11 how to fix pulseaudio and vlc guide in this forum
Problem: In order to get the sound to play on my system I have to go to PulseAudio Device Chooser and select default server, sink, etc. every login. I thought it was suppose to change it "permanently" , getting more specific here, when ever I play music in vlc I tend notice gaps/skips in my music very short skips .5 to 1 second sometimes 2 - 3, just now I was playing music flipping through some tracks then I am greeted with a nasty sound I cannot describe. Does anyone have a proper fix for this? Only result I came upon I have not tried yet was something with hda intel sound card and power settings, which feel will not work anyway
Here is my sound card: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) Also not to mention, I use to get pop-ups notifying me of pulseaudio device not being to be found and asked to forget this device
I recently got an iPod touch 2nd gen. I plugged it in and it immediately showed up in Rhythmbox. I dragged and dropped music files to the iPod icon listed under devices on the left hand pane. The files ARE on the iPod, I can confirm by finding them on the device in Nautilus. The problem is, they do not show up in the music library on the actual iPod. Did I miss something, or is there a step I must take to get them to show up in the iPod's music library so I can play them?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!
I've had an awkward problem lately: every music player I use wants to instead of play music from my USB external hard drive, stream music from it. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing that. It may have been an accidental key-combo I pressed, thinking I had another window targeted and didn't bother pressing it again for my Totem music player. So I closed out of Totem in hopes that Rythmbox would work like totem used to. Well, it doesn't. It wants to stream music now.The problem with the streaming music is trivial, but here it is: I have a playlist with a little over 300 songs. I have Totem set to shuffle and repeat my music. Streaming music with it makes it just stop randomly after a few songs, and when I try to pause music and play it later it takes a good 30 seconds before it kicks back in at the beginning of the song.Like I always ask because I don't know enough to give back to the community yet, can anyone help me? Thanks.
