I need to start an application (graphical) when the PC start, even before anybody login, and use/launch a specific user. Now only can do this manually; when gdm starts, switch to any text tty [ie. Ctrl + Alt + F1], then I login into the special user, start a X server, export the DISPLAY environment variable, and start the application.
With this steps:
Code:
$X :1 -verbose -nr -nolisten tcp &
# Maybe Metacity -> $ metacity
$export DISPLAY=:1
$JavaApp &
Now i need put this steps (script) in some place to launch the app automatically, and with and specific user [ie. manager].
How can I made it? Maybe in init.d? or an special xinitrc? And how can start the app with the specific user? And, if is possible, who can stop the app when the system going turn off? I have Debian 5.0 and a beginner knowledge of shell script.

When ever I have an issue with our LDAP server (which I was able to fix) we see the following errors in /var/log/messages and it causes problems with our services running on that box, e.g. httpd, nrpe, xinetd, etc. Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://serveraddress/: Can't contact LDAP server Aug 8 17:44:42 hostname httpd: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 64 seconds)... I am only wanting to authenticate SSH and Sudo and not services like httpd, nrpe, xinetd etc.

After the upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, all was well. But after the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, I lost the MySQL server. Now, I recall during the upgrade, I was asked if I wanted to keep the existing my.cnf file or replace it with a newer one. I did as suggested and kept the original as I had edited it before. The same question was asked with a couple other config files. I kept the original in each case. After the first step, I checked the server was running and the websites were up, all was well. After the update to 9.10, when I checked the server, I get the following error:
Code: error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists! Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting this resolved?

I have 4 servers:
- One is loadbalancer, installed keepalived and ipvsadm - LV1
- One is failover for loadbalancer, installed keepalived and ipvsadm too - LV2
- The other servers was installed httpd and mysqld. (RealServer)
LV1 load balancing for both httpd and mysql. And it's working fine.
VIP for http: 192.168.1.110
VIP for mysql: 192.168.1.111
Now I want to setup a website on RealServers , with URL is [url], and this website connect to mysql via VIP 192.168.1.111, this means real servers will connect to their mysql via load balancer (LV!). I tried to connect mysql via VIP from real server but it cannot.

I'm the lead Dev of GnackTrack and we're having issues with running MySQL on the LiveDVD.Once installed everything works fine, mysql can be connected to but when using the liveDVD we get the following error:
Code:
root@root:~# mysql
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
Contents of /etc/mysql/my.cf point to /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock but because this is a liveDVD the actual file is located in:
/rofs/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

all of the website content will be on a separate partition called "/websites". I've got SELinux enabled, and set the context on /websites and subdirectories to "public_content_t", so that httpd (Apache) can access this partition. This works. However we also have mysql databases stored on this partition as well, and we are getting errors like this in /var/log/auditd/audit.log: type=AVC msg=audit(1286249333.390:326): avc: denied { search } for pid=6167 comm="mysqld" name="/" dev=sda3 ino=2 scontext=system_u:system_r:mysqld_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_rublic_content_t:s0 tclass=dir
I've tried setting the context to "mysqld_db_t" on the MySQL database folders, but it appears that it cannot get to the partition at all, or anything outside of /var/lib/mysql/. How can we get mysqld to access databases on this partition? Right now there are symlinks from folders in /var/lib/mysql/ that go to each database on /websites partition. Setting SELinux to Permissive mode gets everything to work fine. Basically with SELinux in Enforcing mode, we're getting errors in the PHP applications that httpd can't connect to the databases.

I'm trying to install Pure-FTPd. I'm going to use it via the internal file-based userlist. The problem is, when I yum install pure-ftpd from rpmforge or CentOS.Karan.Org, I also get mysql, perl-DBI and postgresql-libs as dependencies.Since I'm not intrested in DB-based authentication, I'd strongly prefer to skip these packages. Why are these listed as dependencies, since AFAIK, they are not really dependencies? Can I force yum to skip them somehow?

We have been struggling with a problem with the mysql-server package. This might be in the wrong category because our problems are with it on x86_64. Where the problem happens variables that should populate from the my.cnf don't, on other servers, they do, the my.cnf files are identical except for the server-id
The problem occurs on some of our machines but not others. All are using the mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5.x86_64 The ones that work, when you connect with a client respond with server version 5.0.45-log source distribution The ones that don't work respond with 5.0.45 source distribution
It's unclear what the differences are between the two source versions and how we wind up with two different versions. One thing that might be involved, the mysql package is installed with both the i386 and x86_64

I'm running CentOS 5.4 on i386 machine with 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5Whenever I login into Gnome, a gnome-termial window comes up. Instantly title says root@localhost before settling with user@localhost with current directory as ~/Downloads. Only happens with my particular user account (normal user), not with root as I tried. I also have KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox as other option at login, but terminal only shows up when I log into Gnome (not kde, xfce or fluxbox)I've done and
1. cronetab -e
Nothing there.
2. Don't have ~/.xinitrc ~/.session
3. Nothing in ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile
4. Nothing in /etc/rc.local

Now I use mutt to manage the mail list.
But when I start to mutt, it takes a long time (about 1~2 minutes) to
load all the mail list, about 20 thousands mail.
I don't know why it takes such a long time.

What is the correct way to stop upstart services from staring at boot time ? I'm doing something like this example in /etc/init/mysql.conf:
Code:
#start on (net-device-up
# and local-filesystems
# and runlevel [2345])
start on runlevel [!0123456] # I ADDED THIS LINE (and commented the above ones)
stop on runlevel [016]
1. Is this the correct way ?
2. Is there no way of doing something like we do with update-rc.d -f apache2 remove ?
3. When will ubuntu ship a gui to add or remove services from boot ?

I googled around and couldnt find what I was looking for. Maybe I used the wrong search terms, but whatever. I was wondering if there was a possibility to execute a series of terminal commands just by double-clicking an icon. For example, there would be an icon on my desktop, and if I were to doubleclick it, it would execute "cd ~/.wine2" and then "WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine2" wine program.exe".
I realise that most of you will probably go "duh, that's simple" or something similar, but I am extremely new to ubuntu, and dont know my way around yet.
